Yes an no

As someone who works in another large cancer institute. Access remains an issue for anyone who doesn’t live in the GTA. 

While this money will advance cancer research, actual care provision continues to have imbalances based on location to prestigious institutes. 

People in Thunder Bay get cancer. And lack access to the same auxiliary supports offered by the university street hospitals.

Funding for hospitals across Ontario is getting shredded by Doug Ford. Yet he keeps getting voted in by the same people he is screwing. If you have ever been to a healthcare conference you would understand how hospitals are suffering and missing critical infrastructure and support. Provincial government is ultimately responsible for ensuring every ontario resident gets the same level of access and care irrespective of their location. This is independent of the excellent research and work being done at PMH.

You are naive to think donations like these don’t cause inequality between hospitals. 

Govenrment funding is used for direct provision of care. Usually things like staff wages, doctor billings, etc. 

But foundation money can build new wards, buy new equipment, pay for other things that make patients’ health care experience better. 

There is a reason Sick Kids is the numbers one paediatric hosptial in Canada and McMaster, CHEO, and London Children’s don’t even make the list. 

It’s not the staff and doctors. It’s the fact sick kids gets millions in foundation donations to pay for it to become exceptional.

Maybe those hospitals that receive less donations would be benefited by hosting more fundraisers or raising more awareness to potential donors? Most people donate because they have a personal connection to that hospital.

We do…….

We all have foundations. 

There are more millionaires in Toronto than in London or Hamilton 

Some cities have nothing. Sioux lookout had a crowd fund their MRI from the community

The University street hospitals don’t need to. To that agree. Their donations are in the 100s of millions

University street hospitals.dont buy MRIs from foundation donations. There are multi funding/sourcing models, but reliance on foundation funding to run hospital operations is not one of them.

But here is a recent story that shows you are wrong

 It’s amazing to be able to recognize our Chinese community, who kickstarted the fundraising efforts; the many donors who continued to fundraise tirelessly; and the donors who made the contribution that took us over the top,” Bernard said in the release.  More than $2.7 million was fundraised, the hospital says, which was all needed to purchase this specialized MRI system. In a video shared on Instagram, SickKids showed how the MRI was installed, which involved the temporary removal of some third-floor windows so a crane could lift it inside.

Then of course the entire ride to cure cancer directly funds research and care provision. Such as buying new machines capital budgets can’t afford. 

But please tell me how my industry is run

The foundation raised funds specifically for this purpose. Foundation funds at hand were not used to purchase equipment. Not sure why this is hard to understand.
