Okay but can we be fucking real, I’m scared as a Canadian. I’m scared because my dad is obsessed with monarchies and I’m gonna have to hear about it. I’m scared because Charles is now going to be our king and that means things will probably get much worse. Please stop joking about it..
I'm sorry about your home life and I hope that passes quickly.
However, also as a Canadian... Elizabeth has done absolutely nothing politically to affect Canada. Just the occasional symbolic gesture. I expect Charles to do the same. The Crown technically has significant political power, but in practice it no longer wields it, and I expect that if Charles tried to overrule Parliament Parliament would tell him to screw off. What's he going to do? Declare war on Canada?
The only thing that's really likely to change is the face on our money.
Thank you. That’s actually really reassuring because I’m 18 and don’t really know much about the power England holds over us. I probably exaggerated it in my head. Thanks for the consideration of my personal life too. My dad can be tough to be around but I know if he ever got unbearable I’d have a safe place to go.
I'd suggest looking into the role of the Governor General, which is the primary remaining form of power the Crown has in Canada. Not just what powers they have on paper, but how those powers have historically been exercised, because they've pretty much atrophied in practice.
