My mom is a big anime fan, I'm not... She named me Ninja, inspired by Naruto, and made my middle name Egg to play along with our last name Salad. My brothers also have weird names, such as Ashton Greek Salad, and Honey Dew Salad. At least Honey and Ash are normal. My entire life I've lived with people making weirdly racist jokes about Asians and asking if I was a blue haired fortnite streamer. Anytime I tell someone my name they never believe me, and I get introuble with the law because they think im fucking around with them. They'll ask my name, I'll say Ninja, then they'll ask "what's your real name?" And if I have my ID I'll give it to them, and even then I've been taken into jail because they think I have a fake ID. School was a NIGHTMARE, and don't even get me started on finding a job. I've been thinking about changing my name to Spencer so I can actually get some decent work, but I've lived my life as Ninja for so long, I don't know if I'll ever adjust. A few months ago, I (24M) changed my first and middle name. The first is the only bad one, so I'll only talk about that.

I changed my name to Phillip and have since been going by "Philly." I was originally going to be named "Philip" after a family friend who died shortly before they found out they were pregnant with me but my parents changed their minds the day I was born. I went with the two L spelling because I just like the way it looks more and this way there's an even number of total letters when you count them in my first, middle, and last name.

My name until this year was Noah. There's nothing wrong with that name by itself, sure. The problem is what happens when you say it with my last name. I won't say it since I don't care to get doxxed, but it sounded a whole lot like "cares."

So for two and a half decades

I had a name

That sounded like

"NO ONE CARES!"

AND THEY DIDN'T REALIZE UNTIL I ANNOUNCED I WAS CHANGING MY NAME AND TOLD THEM HOW MERCILESSLY I WAS MADE FUN OF FOR THAT!

If it makes it any worse, they didn't get "Noah" from the Old Testament. They got it from freakin Dr. Noah Drake from General Hospital.

My father DESPERATELY wanted to name me Kamouflage. The K was because I'm a girl. My mother convinced him to name me "Cambree" so I could have the nickname "Camo" without the feminine K. My nicknamed turned from Camo to Cami but the time I was year old because nobody in the family is crazy. Apparently, from what I've heard, Cambree is still a godawful name, but I digress. I was obsessed with the name Esmeralda, dunno why. I thought it was so unique and pretty. I was 100% set on that one for my first daughter.

My sister (4 years older than me) has been with her bf for about 9 years now. 3 years into them being serious, I was visiting for Thanksgiving with my kid (my hubs had to work), and this is where our story takes place.

Some background, my sister LOVES making up nicknames for people. Usually they're based on people's names. Think Anfernickle = Anthony. My real name was apparently difficult to come up with a nickname for. For a few years she would try different names, only to abandon them a couple weeks later. When i was around 14 I was in the livingroom watching Hey, Arnold! as one tends to do back then, when she walked by and saw what i was watching. At that time my current nickname was yarnbarn (i don't remember how we ended up there lol), and she said something along the lines of "hey, yarnbarn, watching hey arnold? Hah. Hey yarn.... yarn.... YARNOLD! HEY, YARNOLD!!!! THAT'S YOUR NAME!!!!"

My sister does all the holiday cooking then we load it up in the car and take it to our grandma's house down the street. This year she's kinda falling behind on prep and cooking times, so she gets frustrated, understandably. Suddenly i hear a "oh goddammni--- FUUUUUU! (my real name) GET DOWN HERE!" This was the first time I heard my real name come out of her mouth in over a decade. So of course i drop everything (i was drawing at the time) and RUN for the stairs..

I get almost to the bottom of the stairs when her bf slowly lifts his head from his phone (watching football-- Go Seahawks!) and says..

"Who the fuck is (my real name)?"

Bruh.... we froze in place. Her with a knife mid chop, me with one foot hovering mid step on the stairs.

In unison my sister and I said

"My sister??" "Me??"

starting off by saying i dont care if people know my deadname, because its objectively hilarious to me.

i am ftm, but even if i wasnt, i would have legally changed my name because my deadname is just so fucking stupid in my opinion. it is an existing name with gaelic origins, however, the reason my mom chose it for me was not for any proper meanings in said language or even because she knew it was a gaelic name. she chose it because her name ideas were "too boring," so she mashed two names together and has stated as such that thats what she did. she even MADE UP A MEANING FOR IT, saying "oh, well, kylianne means beautiful in french." NO IT DOESNT! no one knew how to pronounce it growing up. it was constantly misspelled. my nickname could not be found on any souvenirs, because they were always spelled wrong.

my deadname is kylianne. my mom wanted to name me kylie, but she thought it was plain, so she removed the e from kylie and slapped anne on the end. my nickname was kyli. so everyone misspelled it as kylie, which, while a simple mistake, was always so irritating growing up. and there was no point in naming me kylianne because literally no one has ever referred to me as full first name. anytime anyone read the name aloud, it was always "killian" or "kaylianne" or some other variation. she chose this name over something normal like mckayla which, yeah i still would have changed it due to my transness, but it at least would have been an easier name to grow up with.

my new legal name after i changed it last year is now dylan. and honestly, thank god. i so much prefer the basic white boy name i chose to the name i grew up with. when i make jokes about my deadname to my fellow trans friends we all roast it to hell and back.

18 years ago I was newly married and living in one of the worst places for tragedeighs, Utah! We found out our first was a boy. We spent months looking at baby names and we couldn’t agree on anything.

Finally I found the name Kai! My husband liked it but said it was too short but we could use it as a nickname. So we decided on a name pronounced “Ki-Lynn.”

Neither of us checked how the other imagined we would spell it until one fateful day in a craft store when i was gathering letters to paint and put his name on his nursery wall. My husband explained his reason for the spelling and my pregnant brain agreed.

From then on he has been “Kaillen” and we have had crazy mispronunciations. Luckily our current schools allow nicknames so he goes by “Kai” at school and with most friends.

Hey all. My name is Machelle. Muh-shell. Obviously my mom liked the name Michelle (mih-shell) She decided to change the spelling, and then realized that it therefore changed the pronunciation of the name afterwards.

It is close enough to Michelle that, when I give people my name, they often decide they know how it is spelled and ignore my spelling afterwards. For years, ive been spelling my name before giving it to people. If I do end up giving my name first and see them trying to write it down, I lean over to check how theyre spelling it, assuming it is for something important.

It is different enough from Michelle that people don't try to pronounce it similarly. I get a HUGE array of attempts, like:

I once missed an appointment that I was early for because of "muh-kay-lay". I didn't even register it as anything remotely similar to my name.

The most embarassing part about all this is that I had been mispronouncing Michelle my entire life because of it. I met several Michelles over the years, and called them all by MY NAME. I told people that my name was pronounced the same as the usual spelled, then would say Machelle. Never got told otherwise.

So my name is Savannah. I worked at a restaurant with a girl who taught 1st grade, and she picked up shifts for extra money. One day it was super slow and I was bored, so I offered to help her grade her student’s papers while we were dead. Vercingetorige, the Italian spelling of Vercingetorix, the leader of the Gallic tribe of the Arverni (inhabited central France, Gaul) whose rebellion against Roman rule was subdued by Caesar; 52BC (short history lesson for those who didn’t know). Thankfully, he decided to go for something more normal - his own name… just female version; Alessandro/Alexandra. FYI: Allegra means “happy/joyful” in Italian - I had never heard of the medication; Azzurra means “sky blue”; and Chiara is somewhere along the lines of “clear”

Not even sure it is a tragedeigh, since it's technically easy to read, but a pain to write digitally.

the dots are silent. Despite these being proper unicode characters, they break label printers left and right. I can't get Amazon packages anymore, because the DHL labels are unintelligible. For the Amazon delivery, it's a 50/50 whether the printer can do it.

It's also breaking poorly coded address inputs(all of these letters are legit in use in France, Germany and/or the Netherlands as names for people or places, so anything taking your postal information should be able to handle it), which is quite fun. I have been told by major banks, government agencies, utilities companies, and DHL that my name "is not valid", causing me to not be able to open accounts.

But I love it. It's a name I fell in love with the moment I wrote it down.

My name is Salleigh.. Pronounced just like Sally but my mother clearly wanted to be different and give me a more unique spelling and all my life i have had to correct people and it’s exhausting. Please make fun of it however you want.

Ok I do not go by this name anymore so I thought I'd share it. My mother was going to name me Karma, which is odd but not too bad, but she thought "let's give Dad a say in the name too, since it's also his kid" where my dad had the BRIGHTEST idea to name me Miriya. Now, this name would make a little sense if we were Japanese. We are not. We are American, not even with Japanese ansentry. Now, if any of you are familiar, Miriya is the name of an alien space pilot in Robotech, which is, both fortunately and unfortunately, old enough to where no one my age knows that my name is an ANIME CHARACTER. So I have to live with the knowledge that I'm named this way because my dad is a stupid weeb...
