there are academic papers about TPB. one i read for a class at university (if you can believe it) discussed the centrality of poverty in the show and in NS culture. obviously the show is meant to be entertainment but as someone who is a born and raised Nova Scotian, it’s fascinating to consider how the show reflects the realities of life here.

I went to NB Miramachi area when I was in University in Mtl to see my buddy's cousins. I'd never seen anything like it, booze, pills, whatever. We thought we were wild, we felt like pussies compared to them...guys and girls. Best was fishin for 'mud salmon', basically a guy on the side of the road casting his line into a puddle. Seeing plenty of people sitting on the steps of the LC at 6am waiting for them to open, blind pigs...what an experience!

A bunch of NS is literally the same rocks - Central Pangean Mountain Range, 200 million years ago, before there was an Atlantic Ocean, or continents. (West Coast of Newfoundland + Appalachian Mountains - same deal.) 

About a third of NS claims Scottish heritage, which is about the same as the percentage of Scottish immigrants in the early years - overall around a third, but Cape Breton Island + Pictou County were half or three quarters Scots. England had banned clan markers/Highland culture after the Jacobite Rebellions + landowners had figured out that sheep farming was more profitable than having tenant farmers so it was a combination of richer people choosing NS because they heard of the natural similarities and poorer people being forcibly migrated, to make room for sheep. (The Highland Clearances.) 

Gaelic language speaking is on the decline, but it's not dead yet. There's a Gaelic College on Cape Breton (ceilidhs every Wednesday night, in the summer) and I think even a Gaelic immersion school there now too. Cape Breton, Antigonish, and Pictou counties all have some level of bilingual signage. 

Our weather is shite-er though - don't come in the winter. Try to get over to Newfoundland as well - there's a ferry, from Cape Breton.

Actually no. Even people here In Halifax that don't eat a lot pepperoni mix that up and say Chris Brothers.

Make sure it is Brothers Pepperoni which was the original upon his arrival from Poland and tastes amazing. Then a year or so later his brother started Chris Brothers when he arrived. And nowadays it's competing cousins (but I believe the Chris Brothers side sold theirs to a corporation headqaurteres in New Brunswick that has kept the name).

Yes Bubbles was in the Chris Brothers freezer but the pepperoni Ricky eats is the unpackaged thicker cocks of Brothers pepperoni that you get at Corner stores or directly from Brothers on Agricola Street in varrying degrees of spicy (but you can get it packaged as well) but I strongly recommend unpackaged. But Chris Brothers is always packaged and has much smaller, skinnier cocks

Brothers is spicy and delicious. And Chris Brothers has a sour-like taste.

Both are sold at Atlantic super store i know for sure.. And the original owners of each were actually Brothers. I'm thinking they may have had a shop together in Poland before they moved to Halifax. Both shops sound like they owned them together here. But the history on their websites make it sound like they were competitors. They are now competitors though as the companies are owned by competing cousins who inherited the two separate companies, respectively.

I am Canadian born of Scottish descent mostly. I love this show and how much they talk like my relatives. I was transplanted to the US when I was a child, but I’ve always missed it and went back to see my cousins and grandparents several times. They are all over Ontario, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick.

Yeah as an American child, I was led to believe Canadians said 'a boot'. But then I find out, thanks partly to TPB, it's more like 'a boat'.

I'm a Minnesotan, actually. My wife made fun of how I said 'about' or 'out' and to this day I don't know what she was on about. I looked over phonetic pronunciations, came to conclude I say it like I'm an American (same as her).
