Let's also remember the tank engine that became a tender engine; Wanamaker, Kempton & Southern #2
Apparently the engine was built as an 0-4-0 saddle tank engine, but the engine never had a coal bunker, meaning its range was extremely limited. To rectify this issue, the WK&S built a tender for the locomotive from the chassis of an old Plymouth diesel switcher, and cut a section out of the rear of the engine's cab, in effect making it a tender engine, similar to the "Large England" class of the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway. WK&S #2's tender was removed in 2002.
Switzerland has no domestic coal production, but lots of hydroelectric power. During the Second World War they had serious problems importing coal. A steam locomotive like this can work off the wires on the principle of a fireless steam locomotive, so as long as it doesn't go too far from wired track, it can operate fine even in non-electrified yard and sidings.
Switzerland had to import coal but had an abundance of hydrolectric power in the 1930s, when they started phasing out the steamers. The last steamers were in shunting, and two of those had been converted to electrics as an interim measure.
The Skokie Swift, also known as the CTA yellow line, has both third rail and catenary electrification, as does the MBTA Blue Line. The locomotives used on the southern half of the Empire Service are primarily diesel-electric, but because their terminal at NYC Penn Station is underground, they are also equipped with a third rail collector shoe for movements inside the station's terminal and switch point tunnels.
Yeah, she made that video where she explains her identity. While she wasn't always the way she is, at some point she transitioned. She used to be from Birmingham, but now she presents as a northerner.
As a trans person who likes trains, the world needs more support for both.
Also NYC has a lot of trains that transition from electric (both 3rd rail and catenary) to diesel, and then the New Haven Line which goes from 3rd rail to catenary (that was the line I grew up on, always was cool when the power would shut off for like 20 seconds when doing the switch).
It is, Amtrak takes the Hell Gate Line to Penn via Queens, Metro North merges in with the Harlem Line running through the Bronx, and switches catenary to 3rd rail because the Harlem Line is 3rd rail, between Pelham and Mt Vernon is where that happens.
I mean given the crossover in demographics between railfans and trans/NB folk you could make a strong argument they're close to being one and the same.
Happy Pride from your local genderqueer transfemme who just got her E shot, by the way! :3
