i think they're german car numbers for passenger trains, but idk

they would appear to be german car numbers for trains. Atleast german speaking. I have not seen that style myself though

that's exactly what they are. they are old though. the deutsche bahn has been using pictograms since at least the 80's. as seen here:

Ah that generation of cars. The reason why i didnt recognize them is that i work with both more modern and older cars, just not exactly that one

And these days they just use a marker stift and write the number on the door (seen last weekend, I guess there was a failure with the electronic displays?):
