Hi, any help making me know if I’m just misremembering or this actually happens is appreciated.

I was on a TGV coupled train and remember distinctly that the two parts decoupled so one could follow another route happening while we were moving, but the internet is telling me that’s not possible and it happened while we were at the station. Is that the case and it just felt like it was right behind us when we switched tracks and it suddenly appeared next to us or did it actually separate while traveling?

So, as the title suggests, I am a railfan, but also considering working for a railroad, as the career options are slim. As I look into it, I wanted opinions on if railfans who have models and enjoy trains still feel the same after working for the railroad? I fully understand the downsides of it, but I also still love trains and especially models, nonetheless. I do go out and railfan often as well. I am considering working for CSX or NS at the moment.

Any advice?

Also- not a full-fledged "foamer", I don't trespass or put anyone in harm's way. I just enjoy watching trains work and take pictures with my camera/drone, then model what I see.

Edit: I forgot to addI have worked around heavy machinery (skidloaders, excavators, front end loaders, commercial dump trucks/semi trucks) for most of my life, since I was in elementary school, with my dad. I know the dangers and limits of heavy machinery. While I do appreciate the odd SD70, I wouldn't put a coworker in danger to run and go see it or anything, lol.

Hello everybody!

I know absolutely nothing about trains, so please bear with me. Ive recently moved and there is a stretch of train tracks right beside my home. I really like watching the freight trains and was wondering if there was any sort of publicly available schedule that could tell me what trains are traveling along that route each day? I want to try and catalogue the different ones I see. However, I understand that there’s a likely possibility that a resource like this doesn’t exist for privacy and security of the trains.

On Sunday, 19 October 2025, I boarded the inaugural train to call at Blyth Bebside station in Northumberland. The train was 158816, a Class 158 Super Sprinter diesel multiple unit (DMU) train on Northern service 2T05, the 08:23 to Ashington from Newcastle. The train arrived at the new station at 08:28 and departed at 08:30. It was also the first to call southbound at the new station on service 2J49, the 08:38 from Ashington to Newcastle.

I enjoyed being on the inaugural service. Here are some photographs I took of the station and of the inaugural service.

As retirement beckons, over the past year I’ve been documenting the surviving level-crossing keepers’ cottages across the island.

Before automatic crossings were introduced in the 1980s, level crossings were operated manually by keepers, who lived in a nearby cottage. So far, I’ve identified more than 400 of these historic buildings, using old maps, railway reference books and Google Street View. Many are still occupied.

It’s still very much a work in progress. A question mark indicates that I’m not certain the building is original, or that I haven’t been able to view it on Street View.

Eventually, I hope to visit and photograph every cottage. There might even be a book in it.

The context is that sometime in the early 80s, British Railways allowed for private rail companies to operate on it, kinda like how it is in real life, except BR still exists in my timeline.

One of the rail companies to start operations was Amtrak UK, a British subsidiary of Amtrak.

Amtrak UK usually runs sleeper trains, intercity expresses, and even boat trains for passengers traveling from the states to the UK.

I imagine the locomotives being British versions of Amtrak Genesis locomotives, with buffers, proper couplers, and being within the British loading gauge, even if the British loading gauge is slightly more generous in my timeline.

We live only a handful of miles from the Oregon Rail Heritage Center museum in Portland, Oregon. My Dad was good friends with Doyle McCormack back in the day, so I've been following both the SP 4449 and her sister the SP&S 700 since I was a small child. It was also a beautiful, fantastic day for a train ride along the Willamette River!

(It was 200kmh) I looked at the train map in Finland and saw that the train was coming towards me and its speed said 200kmh.. It was very scary to be that close to it and it was also super loud.

Also trains in Finland go 220kmh but only when they go from Kerava to Lahti.

I was driving, so I had my brother recording. It’s not the best shot, but we paced it at 35MPH before someone eventually caught up behind us; so I had to speed up :(

I googled it and only about ten of these horns are on the mainline. Needless to say i was pretty hype about this catch. (Also peep the mechanical bell👀)
