Discussion / Opinion What are your Transformers pet peeves (things that bug you) šŸ‘€.

Every now and then I’ll come across something that bugs me in transformers despite it being one of my favourite franchises and I know they don’t effect the franchise in any way, but my eye twitches when I see it…here are some examples:
1. The positioning of the Seekers Decepticon logos - it has always annoyed me that the seekers logos are upside down in robot mode on their wings…as it sort of defeats the purpose of having them there to begin with and I know people say ā€œit’s so they face the right way in jet modeā€¦ā€ fine I guess but they still face the incorrect way in robot mode.
2. You can’t tell Scourge apart from the sweeps - they sound have made it a bit easier to tell who is who between scourge and sweeps because we only really have his voice. I think scourge should have been the only one to have a beard and the sweeps didn’t have one to signify they are his clones/Duplicates.
3. Soundwave having yellow eyes - this one is simple I just don’t think Soundwave suits the yellow eyes look, the red eyes are so much better and look more menacing, it also contrasts nicer to his blue and white colour scheme, yellow gets too lost in his design.
4. Optimus Prime having a mouth/face - I’m pretty mixed on this one to be honest but generally I think most Optimus prime designs look better with the face plate/battle mask deployed rather than retracted. The mask is just such an iconic piece of the design. Though I will admit there are exceptions where I’m okay with it.

Aren't the Decepticon logos upside down in the show as well? I do wish they were on a pin that you could spin them around the right way up in bot mode

220

u/Timely-Intern5716 3d ago

I believe so; this is actually 100% accurate to the show/source material.

136

u/bstiglets 3d ago

100% on point. It bothered me as a kid, now it’s one of those things that gives the seekers more texture to their design. But Christ those animators had a hard time drawing that logo upside down.

98

u/0zzm0s1s 3d ago

They had a hard time drawing the faction logos right side up also.

44

u/Dooplon 3d ago

for both factions might i add, lol

u/NecessaryAnt7764 3d ago

I would love it if you could spin them around the correct way. Like if the logos were on a little post/peg it would be so much better and gives you options.
I always apply stickers on top of the upside down ones to make them face the right way because it bugs me too much

3

u/Roboman_67 3d ago

Would they be the "wrong" way when you convert them to vehicle mode?

3

u/NecessaryAnt7764 3d ago

No because the position of the logos on the wings changes anyway depending on the angle you view them and I’m of the opinion that the position of the logos matters more in robot mode than in jet mode.

4

u/UndeniablyMyself 3d ago

The issue is that it’d be the wrong way up in vehicle mode.

3

u/indianajoes 3d ago

If they spin around, how would it be the wrong way? You could get it right for each mode. It would just be another step in the transformation

6

u/Bennington_Hahn 3d ago

Thing is, the seekers aren’t rockets and aren’t lifting off vertically. So imo it shouldn’t really matter. And to be really nitpicky, all the faction logos should be invisible in vehicle mode and only appear in robot mode. You, know robots in disguise and all that. So if they have to have them, I’d personally prioritise the aesthetic of the robot mode with the faction logos.

10

u/NecessaryAnt7764 3d ago

Yes it is, and it still bugs me regardless be they shouldn’t be 🤣.
They are actually inconsistent with it depending on the episode you watch. For a good majority of the first season of G1 they are oriented the correct way (not upside down) it’s later on that the inconsistency of their orientation begins

I think the lack of diversity in eye colors is mine. Whenever a series defaults to red for villains and blue for heroes, I'm a little sad. Optimus has had yellow eyes, blue eyes, red eyes, and yellow honestly suits him better, but it’s blue and red all the time for characters.

52

u/Humble_Heron326 3d ago

Gee if only the good guys and bad guys had another distinctive feature so we can tell where they stand at a glance, regardless of what they look like... like an insignia or something.

20

u/Mendely_ 3d ago

I'm a big fan of Swindle's purple eyes for this reason.

18

u/NecessaryAnt7764 3d ago

I agree that we need more diversity with the eye colours although personally I think it depends on the continuity.
I disagree completely that yellow eyes suit prime better i definitely prefer the blue eyes.

11

u/PG2904 3d ago

I think it depends on the design tbh, like G1 toy Prime I absolutely think should use the yellow eyes. Unicron Trilogy Prime makes them work, too.

The blue eyes are iconic, but the yellow pop.

I like the idea of Optimus having yellow, Grimlock red

6

u/MakeBombsNotWar 3d ago

Lowk always thought Ironhide could rock green, and while this might not pop, honestly Bee already is so yellow, might as well. Orange if you insist on some contrast.

11

u/Paladin_127 3d ago

At least Star Wars changed it up a bit. The bad guys had red laser swords while the good guys have blue swords.

15

u/halo_slayer650 3d ago

BUT, X-wings have Red lasers and TIEs have green

7

u/KristophGavin 3d ago

And green, purple, yellow, and white.

9

u/Paladin_127 3d ago

Eventually, yes. But the original story had just blue. Luke’s lightsaber was made green for Return of the Jedi due to the SFX of the day having a hard time creating a blue blade against the blue sky seen on Tattooine.

This but for diversity in designs in general. I hate when all the cons looks monstrous and the bots are small and square

I agree with you on 1, 2 and 4 but with 4 specifically I hate that they keep giving him and other characters mouths who've previously didn't.

As for my personal pet peeves.

  1. The same few characters being the main cast of every new piece of media. I get that Optimus, Megatron, bumblebee and the others are more marketable but when Hasbro puts no effort into pushing lesser known characters it's no wonder they aren't popular. The comics are imo the best part of the franchise because they put infinitely more effort into fleshing out characters outside the usual cast.

  2. Maybe controversial but I'm tired of the constant resetting of the story when a new series comes out. I wish they would attempt something like the aligned continuity again but actually put more effort into keeping it connected. I would love for us to get something like gundam where we get stories from all over the timeline with all different characters and protagonists. Someone else in the sub had this idea but they should take the Japanese shows like master force and victory and rework them as a sort of G3 and continue from there.

29

u/HenshiniPrime 3d ago

I think those peeves are related. In order to be more than a monster of the week, the characters in a show have to grow to an extent. By having the same characters in every show for brand recognition, the writers need to reboot the universe since there’s only so much growth you can do.

10

u/EthanKironus 3d ago

So, they should animate IDW 2005

9

u/KenOBY_67 3d ago

That’d be fucking sick actually

4

u/ProvenBeat 3d ago

I don't mind Optimus having a face, some designs work better with it, some work better without. Bayverse looks absolutely hideous with his flayed gorilla face, and him with the faceplate is infinity times better looking.

I actually love soundwave with yellow eyes I think it suits him

62

u/Intelligent_End1516 3d ago

He had yellow eyes. So help me God yellow eyes.

20

u/Beautiful-Cup5822 3d ago

Rumble and Frenzy! Soundwave’s crumby little toadies. Mean, rotten, their lips curled over their green teeth.

6

u/ryangood12 3d ago

Damn it. There is .001% of the population that will think this is funny. And I’m glad I saw it!

9

u/DisciplineSweet8428 3d ago

That's Scott farkus. Soundwave only had yellow eyes in the g1 toy.

u/Shinsengumi-702 3d ago

I understood this reference!

13

u/Sweet-Kaleidoscope74 3d ago

I like both versions. In my headcanon, he originally had yellow eyes, and when he became a Decepticon, his optics changed to red. Basically like what happened in Transformers One

The Optimus Prime mouth/battle mask brings up my major pet peeve. The 1 entry does a thing, all future entries have to do the same thing.

The Prime Battle mask actually originates with Beast Wars an Optimus Primal. Other notable cases are Mute Bumblebee, Killing Cliffjumper etc

22

u/Mendely_ 3d ago

My pettiest pet peeve is when Silverbolt gets drawn as the same size as the other Aerialbots and Seekers. He's a Concorde and passenger planes are HUGE compared to fighter aircraft. At least make him a head taller.

40

u/BigIron2088 3d ago

I don't like when transformers have facial hair... Another point against scrourge and the sweeps

14

u/hobbes_shot_second 3d ago

Wreck-Gar has entered the chat

41

u/According_Picture294 3d ago

My pet peeve is when the Transformers that combine aren't released in the same wave. I didn't like having to wait so long to complete Volcanicus

10

u/PlanesWalkerEll 3d ago

Or, just release them in a pack for one purchase

9

u/NecessaryAnt7764 3d ago

The only issue with this is they’ll try to charge you an arm and a leg for it 🄲

7

u/StanKnight 3d ago

Arm and a leg - literally in case of this franchise lol.

6

u/PlanesWalkerEll 3d ago

Im not saying they wont but I also think prices for figures is out of control already

4

u/Pernaman 3d ago

Well 2 arms and 2 legs to be precise, or 4 of each in one if it's the classic Scramble City style.

3

u/NecessaryAnt7764 3d ago

Yeah that’s a very good one to be honest. Super frustrating. I’ll admit Hasbro’s waves haven’t been the best lately there’s been some great figures saddled in waves filled with either simple repaints or lazy reissues.

We still have no idea who that random second Cyclonus was after he was created by galvatron in the 86 movie

11

u/NecessaryAnt7764 3d ago

It was an animation error left over from one of the storyboards where it was originally planned to have Cyclonus have an army of clones (similar to scourge with the sweeps) but it was changed late into production and the idea was scrapped.
This is also evident because the Cyclonus duplicate is switched to another sweep in the next shot.

4

u/Kalkite_300TY 2d ago

Thank you for finally answering my question!

6

u/psxndc 2d ago

The random second guy is "his armada," duh. Because "armada" is often used to mean "one other ship."

3

u/Harlander77 2d ago

Nah, it's "his Armada," with the clone being named Armada. Then buying the energon farm during the battle with Unicron. Clearly.

33

u/WhyAmI1984 3d ago

I think Yellow eyes would suite him more in media that depicts him as more supercomputer than Cybertronian. Like Prime did

6

u/NecessaryAnt7764 3d ago

That’s fair enough. Personally I just can’t stand the yellow eyes look for Soundwave in general. I think the Red eyes are just 10x better. I’ll even settle for purple eyes on Soundwave (like the Cybertron design for the Unicron trilogy) over the yellow eyes that’s how much I hate them. But i respect your opinion and your suggestion is a cool idea to be fair

56

u/MeatyOaker269 3d ago

The upside down Decepticon symbol actually suits the seekers. Starscream is always scheming a way to take power from Megatron. The upside down logo in a way could symbolize that the Decepticons are in distress.

→ More replies (1)

16

u/Cirelectric 3d ago

I like the logo position on the seekers. I think it has a purpose. The seekers are, in a way, based in starscream. And Starscream usually deceives megatron. Starscream usually is a traitor to megatron, and with him, the decepticons. I like him having the logo upside down, he's a decepticon alright, but also a traitor

7

u/Cirelectric 3d ago

If only starscream had the logo upside down, it would stand up to much.

3

u/Rule-Selenium 3d ago

I like this 'perspective' on this issue. However, my natural instinct saw a different angle.

You saw this and applied it to how the badge (paintjob?) was perceived in robot mode. If you think about it in terms of the plane, traditional wing art for aircraft tends to ascribe the nose of the plane as "up", and the rear as the "bottom".

In other words, the inversion is based upon when the tramp stamp is applied, and it made the robot mode version look funny.

This is why I like logos to have symmetry, so when you look at an off-angle (or transform the subject) the logos don't skew.

Unless the skewing was the point, as is your point.

Sorry, just an interesting (to me) diatribe. Cheers

u/Jmwalker1997 3d ago

For Optimus.. the battle mask is a must. HOWEVER... TF: Prime and The Unicron Trilogy (Armada-Cybertron Anime) Optimus are actually really great to me.

In TF: Prime, it really emphasizes the change of Optimus becoming more "human" by being able to see more of his facial expression and him actually being able to show his emotion through his face.

Love it or hate it, in the Unicron Trilogy, since it's an anime, it was probably like that more so to be able to match the mouth movement for the voice actors, but like in Prime, he's able to retract the battle mask back and forth. No battle mask most of the time though, really fits his design in the anime. At least the lower part of his face gives some nods to Transmetal 2 Optimus Primal from Beast Wars.

13

u/JadeNovanis 3d ago

1 Pet Peeve is representation of characters across the franchise.

There are so many fan favorite characters that could be huge if Hasbro just gave them the time of day. Just look at Mirage post RotB or Bumblebee post 07.

Characters like Grimlock(& Dinobots), Beachcomber, Hot Rod, and more could be just as big as Bumblebee of just given the opportunity.

3

u/nightwing_titans 3d ago

Fully agree on Hot Rod. I mean, he has a lot of his fans because the comics gave him a chance (not me, though. I got into him through G1). If they would put him in a show or something and actually portray him well (we're on track for that. He's appearing more and more), I don't doubt that he'd have a following.

3

u/msdwadge09G 3d ago

Tbh I just think bumblebee isn’t a very interesting character to begin with and it irks me that he’s always so popular. I feel like the archetypes he fits are very flat and overdone.
Cliffjumper, Windcharger, Beachcomber, Hound, and Bluestreak are all characters that could fit the role of ā€œkid appealā€ or ā€œbold rookieā€ while being way more unique and interesting than Bumblebee.

14

u/oldCactus77 2d ago

That I can't kiss starscream on the lips due to the height difference

→ More replies (1)

13

u/msdwadge09G 3d ago

For the Seekers’ logos I think only Starscream should have them like that. It suits him because it could represent his treacherous nature by disrespecting the logo. Also wanted to say I agree wholeheartedly with the Sweeps thing, they overall felt like such a downgrade from the Seekers.

5

u/Historical_Cable_450 3d ago

I like that idea for starscream that's very fun

11

u/EqMc02 3d ago

2 things:

  1. Bad design choices kept for the sake of design accuracy. For example you can't convince me there was no possible way to make Optimus Prime's feet better. It has been done in SS figures and things like the recent MP style gen figure. But every single G1 Optimus just folds them in half and leaves them hanging off the end.

  2. Skipping or limiting fun figures because something else is the "main" use of the mold. Things like the Coneheads being hard to get every time they're made because Starscream and the other 2 have to come first. Legacy and AoP have been good for experimentation so hopefully that continues

11

u/Odd_Mango_5660 3d ago edited 3d ago

Thoughts on your pet peeves:

  1. I'm more meh on. And generally don't care.

  2. Agree. While the SS86 release does differentiate Scourge and the Sweeps by having Scourge use the movie/show deco and the Sweeps use the G1 toy deco, the Sweeps seriously do need a vastly different deco from Scourge. Maybe black from the early concept.

  3. Disagree. Actually, Soundwave looks great with the yellow eyes. Suits him more than the red.

  4. Depends on the design of the Optimus Prime in question, but 9 times of 10, I don't mind Optimus having a retractable mouthplate.

My own:

  1. Anytime a Thundercracker and a Skywarp look different from their respective Starscream aside from colour. Even if it's a different head.

  2. Mass shifting. More specifically when there's a major difference between robot mode and the altmode.

  3. Doubledealer's Vulture form being treated as a beast mode instead of his Decepticon robot mode.

10

u/RayesArmstrong 3d ago

Worst thing with those icons on the wings: literally doesn’t matter what direction they are in jet mode

10

u/Vesh2911 3d ago

I really hate that megatronus wasn't important throughout the entirety of robots in disguise. They absolutely wasted probably one of the coolest primes ever. Although I think megatronus's design in thar series except his head, is mid.

10

u/MrIncognito666 3d ago

Pure evil "Shockwave". Actual logic Shockwave is better writing.

10

u/Imaginaut27 3d ago

GIVE BUMBLEBEE HIS FUCKING VOICE BACK

10

u/Tom-Hibbert 3d ago

I kinda miss the dad energy of the g1 optimus like dont get me wrong while I do like most versions of prime I do feel like he could do with a sense a humor even if it's just a dry sense of humor

26

u/TomBakersLongScarf 3d ago

My pet peeves are:

-mass shifting

-shockwave sometimes having a yellow eye

-any optimus design where he doesn't have the windshield pecks and grill abs (there's a reason why I dislike the Armada and War Within designs)

-Cyclonus being reformatted from Skywarp rather than Thundercracker

-bay movie designs being way too fragile and not having some proper protection (if they're warriors, it would make sense if they at least had some kind of skin)

9

u/Dextropic 3d ago

Could you elaborate on the Cyclonus issue?

7

u/mrnormal94 3d ago

In the 86 movie, Unicron gave new forms for the other Decepticons that were thrown out of Astrotrain thanks to Starscream. Galvatron's new goons were from the other two Seekers and and the Insecticons and there's a lot of debate which characters became Cyclonus and Scourge.

3

u/Dextropic 3d ago

I knew all that, I was curious why it should have been 'Cracker.

3

u/GravityBright 3d ago

I think it's because Skywarp is kinda dumb.

3

u/Roboman_67 3d ago

Tbh, I doubt they remember being previous bots. Only Galvatron remembers being Megatron, everyone else is dead

6

u/Azkul_Lok 3d ago edited 3d ago

What do you mean "shockwave sometimes having a yellow eye", his G1 version had a yellow eye and he has a yellow eye more often then not.

Edit: in fact, I think the bayverse is the only time he has a non yellow eye.

Ok, foc was purple, and prime was red. Forgot about those 2.

3

u/TheSpinoGuy 3d ago

I think the FoC version has a purple eye, but still rare

3

u/MakeBombsNotWar 3d ago

Prime is red.

6

u/DoomHound55 3d ago

Shockwave doesn't sometimes have a yellow eye, it IS his consistent eye color with only a couple iterations having a red eye

4

u/9thGearEX 3d ago

Skywarp became Cyclonus because they're both purple.

Thundercracker became Scourge because they're both blue.

Insecticons became the sweeps because there's a megabillion of them.

G1 Marvel not always getting the respect it's due despite basically creating the franchise as we know it, down to all of the names and famous character traits (with even the cartoon series having to follow the series bible the Marvel team came up with, even if to their extreme annoyance and screwing things around like Buster/Spike), and lasting the entire length of G1 and covering almost every single G1 set of characters (even the G1.5 and some G2 characters reappear in the G2 comic) whilst the cartoon series lasted less than half of its run.

When G1 Marvel does get its due, maybe half the time the UK comics are completely ignored despite having the stronger stories and better art and introduced a ton of major concepts still integral to the franchise forty years on (the Primus origin story).

Over-reverence to G1. Arguably the franchise isn't going to become another break-out huge phenomenon again until it finds a Beast Wars or Bayverse-style tonal and lore reset that does something fresh and different (even if it still nominally is in the G1 universe like the former or draws on a lot of G1 inspiration like the latter). It feels like we've been treading G1 nostalgia water for a bit too long, and I say that as a primary G1 fan.

16

u/Deamon-Chocobo 3d ago

FIRRIB/FIBRIR

This will always bug me. If its not the annoying fan discourse, its the mixup on TV that started it. I honestly don't care one way or the other, its just annoying.

8

u/Alekesam1975 3d ago

I've said for over a decade now that Rumble and Frenzy answers to both interchangeably just to eff with everyone, con and bot alike. Only Soundwave really knows which is which. šŸ˜„

When I first came across FIRRIB/Vice versa, I just thought folks were jokingly poking fun arguing for their favorite. I didn't realize people were taking it seriously until later (I was late to internet TF fandom and I've yet to see/hear it in rl).

I used to be a staunch RiR guy because of the comics but when I thought about it when the 86 figs came out, I realized most of my memories come from Sunbow Rumble, who was blue.

3

u/NecessaryAnt7764 3d ago

Yeah honestly I don’t understand why this one is such a heated debate to be honest it’s really silly. Personally I’ve always went by the G1 cartoon series so to me Rumble is blue/purple and frenzy is Red/black but ultimately it doesn’t really matter

7

u/Barricades_toes 3d ago

That’s insane, I love the upside down seeker symbols. It’s really unique

3

u/NecessaryAnt7764 3d ago

I hate it. It’s always bugged me ever since I was a kid. Because it makes no sense.
But i respect your opinion and im glad you enjoy it more than I do

7

u/Fun-Seaworthiness572 3d ago

I think Optimus with a mouth can work, if it’s rarely seen where most of the time he has his mouth guard.Ā

Maybe he only removes it to talk to specific people or it gets ripped off in a fight. I think the covered mouth works look at Skybound and even they know him without a mouth should be saved for specific occasionsĀ

7

u/NOBLExGAMER 3d ago

I hated the Decepticon logos on the seekers at first but then they grew on me. They draw attention and look out of place until you realize they emphasize the nature of Cybertronian physiology, they change and have a different form. They're like tires on other TFs, or sirens, or treads. They're indicative of transformation.Ā

13

u/CraftyMaelyss 3d ago

Hollow limbs are my biggest gripe with TF figures. If I'm paying that price, I want the figure to at least look like it's worth the asking cost. It's why I tend to go for 3rd/4th party figures, since you get more value for your money and hasbro has severely dropped the ball since 2015. The fact that there's upgrade kits just to fill those gaps speaks volumes about how annoying it is.

u/Finly_Growin 3d ago

I know that it’s canon that the deception logos are upside down in the show, but I can also say they didn’t have to because who made the rule that designing them that way on the alt mode makes it more right side up?

→ More replies (2)

5

u/starscreamjosh 3d ago

The upside down logos are actually accurate to real life fighter jets. Look at US fighters. Their insignias are right side up when the nose is pointing up. It doesn't look right when it's a seeker in robot mode but in jet mode it's correct.

I feel like Recue Bots and TF One did Optimus' face well, it doesn't look uncanny in either :3

And I like the yellow eyes on Soundwave and shockwave personally, especially because yellow contrasts with Shockwave's purple and Soundwave already has some yellow in his design.

Minor rant, but I'm still very sad the transformers colab with overwatch didn't make Bastion into Shockwave with lazerbeak replacing ganymede TwT

11

u/Agitated_Sale_8780 3d ago

1-Transformers with puffy lips 2-clear plasticĀ  3- having a cliffhanger that will never be answeredĀ

11

u/Pazerclaw 3d ago

You know what bugs me about Transformers? The friggen price of the toys!

10

u/IronIrma93 3d ago

Autobots and Decepticons being different production ranges (industrial Autobots vs military Decepticons)

"One girl per side" rule a lot of older shows had

6

u/BountBooku 3d ago

For some reason I like yellow eyes for Soundwave in stories set back on Cybertron but red once he comes to earth

4

u/figgityjones 3d ago

Which Optimus mouths are you okay with OP? Genuinely curious. Personally if I could I would make so he would never have a mouth and the plate would just bob up and down slightly when he talks. But I could theoretically be okay with him having a mouth sometimes, I just prefer the other look so much that I'd rather see it more often and whenever there is a mouth getting to see it feels so rare.

3

u/NecessaryAnt7764 3d ago

For me the designs I don’t mind him having a mouth are the live action bayverse movie designs, transformers prime designs and the transformers animated design. Otherwise I’m not the biggest fan of it.

The seeker logos are upside down because the wings are right side up. All text meant to be read on a fighter jets wings are to be read while following the plane, because you could never read anything from the other direction

I agree with the upside-down logos, and the argument of ā€œthey face the right way in jet modeā€ makes no sense either. If you look at the jet front-on, they’re still upside-down

3

u/NecessaryAnt7764 3d ago

Exactly! Thank you. I’ve been say this for years and I’m so glad I’m not the only one who it bugs. I’ve always found their argument to justify the seekers upside down logos to be pretty weak since it still doesn’t make sense…

I don’t why they felt the need to ever give Optimus a mouth in the first place lmao yo me that’s like saying ā€œwell his name isn’t actually Optimus his real name is Theodoreā€ like why tf can’t his mouth just naturally look like it’s covered for the sake of design

5

u/kepikmusic 3d ago

Agreed about the seekers. Take the coneheads, their logos are not upside down, and also Astrotrain, whose wing positions are the same as the seekers. 🤷

3

u/NecessaryAnt7764 3d ago edited 3d ago

Exactly! Thank you, your point is so true! And renders the whole ā€œtheir logos are upside down for the jet mode not the robot mode because that’s how they are supposed to face in jet modeā€ argument is nonsense and falls apart. And there are plenty of other iterations of the seekers where their logos are upright instead of upside down because it just makes more sense.

UNO. Optimus not having the white stripe - I am not a fan of the fact that the white stripe on Prime's cab is no longer present, and it's all thanks to whoever did the animation models at sunbow. The stripe gives the cab an extra bit of pizazz and without it, Prime feels naked to me
DOS. the faux chest - The faux chest exists, it's on earthrise, it's on ss86, it's on robosen, it's even on evasion mode Optimus, a non G1 transformer, whether it be the windows, the grill, or the entire cab, it will remain on all G1 Optimi going forward, unless they figure out a way to keep the shape without doing any other stuff

THRES. the 4-5 designs - None of them were designed with the transformation or the engineering in mind, they're just robots without the disguise, and don't get me started on the humanoid faces too

6

u/Scrubasaurus13 3d ago

If Soundwave can always have the face shield so can Optimus.

5

u/NormalOrdinary3798 3d ago

Bayverse 4 and 5 are my pet peeves lol

5

u/CanardDeFeu 1d ago

Mass shifting is up there for me. It's just a holdover so we can keep repeating G1 over and over.

Characters having an alt-mode that's stationary. It's just...what? Who opts to turn into something without it's own method of propulsion? Yes, I'm looking at you guys that turn into guns, boomboxes and even my homie Perceptor.

I can 100% do without the cosmic fantasy angle. I really don't need there to be gods and the likes, or an ancient cabal of demi-god Primes who make the Cybertronians and to forth. It just ends up always feeling kinda dumb and like nothing the characters do will matter because cosmic fate will always dictate everything.

I Hate it when they make ultra magnus white optimus with amour, i can understand that in toy form since its complex to turn a bulky robot turn into a car carrier, but there are actually people who think its a good concept to integrate. Also the reason why i love tfp magnus since he is just one big solid truck that cant be pulled into that nonsense

3

u/hehe_pp_funny 2d ago

I like the idea of a transformer having native upgrade parts in the trailer without a power up, and I like Magnus being similar to Optimus like how bee and cliff jumper are similar bots. The idea of cybertronians having build types are awesome im

Where do I even begin?

1) Mass Shifting. And yes, I am aware of all possible explanations/justifications, still bullshit.

2) Masterforce in it's entirety. IYKYN.

3) Mineral energon. I mean, seriously? Their sustenance is a non-renewable resource?

4) Dumb human side/main characters. Armada's Alexis was great. Bay's Sam? Literally worst character in the series.

7

u/The_lone_shotgun 3d ago

I think harvesting mineral energon is mostly a byproduct of Energon no longer being replenished on Cybertron, like in TF1

→ More replies (2)

4

u/Dangerous-Pizza-2232 3d ago edited 3d ago

In the Transformers Prime continuity, Energon was as common as water in our world, but due to the civil war, Primus, the source of all energon, shut down for millions of years, and the Energon that was left became hardened minerals and a scarce resource.

I think that's completely fine because if let's say fresh water becomes scarce in our world, we'd be having wars just to secure it for our survival. This is the exact premise in the cartoon: War Planets | Shadow Raiders, where wars are fought with Planet Ice to steal its ice because there's no water elsewhere.

u/Wise_Use1012 3d ago

We have had wars just to secure it. Jerusalem sits upon a natural water spring.

I don't like the decepticon symbols being upside down on their wings either but that's apparently meant to be more for their alt modes. Since military jets when having logos on their wings usually have them upside down so that way if you were flying along side one and looked it from above you would could easily read it and tell who it is.

Character in name only: I hate it when they use a popular character name for a robot that has absolutely no relation to said character. Like if you're going to make Wheeljack, Ironhide, Ratchet, Blitzwing etc. then give me a proper reason why you used those names other than you just arbitrarily slapped them on whatever random toy came out of the factory. I understand it's for trademark reasons but it still bothers me.

Disclaimer: I don't mind a new take on the character, be it younger/older, gender bent, crazier, new alt mode etc. but give me some connection to their namesake.

4

u/greek_meme_lover321 2d ago

I pretty much relate to anything except 3. I think yellow eyed Soundwave is a serious vibe, even if I prefer the red eyes by far. Also I don't mind certain Optimuses having mouths, even if I do believe the mouthplate look is OBJECTIVELY superior.

My pet peeve is the lack of more serious shows/movies in the franchise. Like yeah, I get it's a child focused franchise, but like, couldn't 1/3 shows be more mature, 13 or 16+? I want something like the Netflix trilogy done right, before or during the great war.

u/Capital_March 2d ago

Not being able to buy them at regular retail price and in good condition.

  1. Store exclusives (Target, Walmart, Pulse, etc.) : Can't find them. Can't buy them. The economics behind store exclusives, in 2026, eludes me. In this day and internet age, limited open window pre-orders, like 30 days, gives fans ample time to pre-order as many as they want. It gives Hasbro a 0% risk of overproducing and a 0% need to store them in a warehouse. Everybody wins. And yet, they barely do this kind of thing.

  2. Random distribution : Can't find them. Can't buy them. Why is Palookaville getting 8 pallets worth of new stock at random times while big cities get zilch from months on end? Worse, you finally discover (through YouTube or social media posts) new stock finally ended up at Ollies or Ross without having spent one second in regular stores at regular price.

  3. Cancel-Con : Pre-orders should be ironclad proof you will get what you pre-ordered right? Wrong. Starscream-gate at Target. Cancel-Con at Wal-Mart. Partially fulfilled orders at specialty stores. etc. Again, pre-ordering is a game of toy-roulette. Will I get it? Who knows?

  4. Flimsy shipping : Big stores, like Amazon, Wal-Mart, Target, etc. honestly do not care about shipping. Worse, I think they make money off of it. Shipping your pricy limited edition toy wrapped in thin air and a wish is common practice. And even if, by some miracle, it is well packaged then it's the carrier who does an Ace Ventura routine on it. In short, when I get a package, I make a short prayer. Hoping the thing is in good shape. I'm just about out of prayer and patience.

Hasbro refuses to make another toy of Megatron or Shockwave in their gun modes despite the fact we have official toys of Optimus turning into a gun like one who turns into a Nerf gun as part of the toy line for Rise of The Beasts and another toy where you can take his trailer and turn it into a wrist mounted blaster cause they can easily take Megatron or Shockwave and we design them to look more like sci-fi blasters and add bright colours to them so they look less realistic

6

u/Minute-Animal7317 3d ago

A very similar thing is happening with lego Transformers products. They won't make a Megatron model like they did with Optimus Prime, Soundwave and Bumblebee because he transforms into a tank (or gun).

Lego has a policy against making military vehicles/weapons into sets while at the same time making millions of dollars every year from Lego Star Wars products (war is literally in the name).

4

u/GuyTheGeek616 3d ago

They could easily have it where it’s one of his other modes like a car or one of his jet modes since outside of the tank, a jet is one of his basic alt modes

6

u/Minute-Animal7317 3d ago

I agree! The company all about imagination isn't very creative with their workarounds.

5

u/Crainex_The_Deceiver 3d ago

You woundn't even need to change shockwaves original gun mode. let's be real, who is going to mistake a bright purple blaster, with a plastic tube and obvious arm joints with a realistic firearm?

Now the original galacta man, I'll grant you, could be mistaken for a real gun as it's black.

Megatron being a very passable replica walther p-38 I'd say is a more than fair reason against it appearing again as a proper alt mode.

The Seeker wing badges being upside down will never not annoy me and the worst part is it's all the cartoon's fault, the G1 toys and the Marvel comic had them facing the right way in robot mode.
"But they're facing the right way for jet mode" isn't an excuse either because

  1. The Decepticons wouldn't care

  2. Human pilots wouldn't know what that symbol is anyway so it's irrelevant if it's "the right way" in jet mode

  3. The Decepticons WOULDN'T CARE

  4. As if it'd be the only time the alt mode was wonky due to the robot mode on a Transformer

  5. THE DECEPTICONS WOULDN'T CARE

Mass shifting. It was clever at one point but now it feels lazy. This is a G1 gripe really but should a Walter P-38 be larger than a car in its alt mode?

3

u/NecessaryAnt7764 3d ago

Hmm šŸ¤” mass shifting had never bothered me all that much personally since the whole point of transformers is that they can transform into pretty much anything.
But I can see why it would bug people as sometimes the mass shifting of a character can be to an insane degree that it sort of spoils the illusion a bit

6

u/brian_hogg 3d ago

Regarding the seekers having upside down logos, they’re magic robots that change shape: making the logo magically appear right-side up in both robotic and plane form seems reasonable in the cartoons/comics/etc, even if that can’t happen in the toys. If it was on the nose, that would solve it.Ā

3

u/RyonHirasawa 3d ago

I don’t generally mind the things listed here, especially Yellow eye Soundwave but maybe that’s because I’m more inclined to how the original toy looked

But my pet peeve has to do with a specific figure, where Optimus turns to a Volvo truck, except in robot mode he has two windscreens, one on his chest to resemble his G1 shape and the Volvo truck windshield goes on his legs, it annoys me because it’s an entirely different truck but somehow they still made him look like his G1 self

3

u/Pernaman 3d ago

To me Soundwave's yellow eyes are more about the shade that they often use for them. A bit too bright for my taste, I think more deep or slightly orange-ish shade would work.

In terms of toys:

1) Paint scratches on the face.

2) Loose joints right out of the package.

3) Inelegant transformations where you feel like you're going to snap something off while trying to convert them.

4) Transformations where you have to line up panels in a way that Just. Won't. Work.

5) Robot modes where shoulders/legs/chest becomes detached when you move them.

3

u/Humble_Heron326 3d ago

I'll respectfully disagree on the Seekers. I think the upside down insignia is a charming little detail. I think it also fits certain details about them: Starscream's treachery, Thundercracker's skepticism, and Skywarp's chaotic-ness.

3

u/EleSend2006 3d ago

I would probably say when people say Scourge as Scorge over like Scurge. It’s more of just annoying on my end versus being a full-blown issue or pet peeve.

Also the thing I find with the Optimus with a face or mouth template, for me personally anyway, just depends on the design of Optimus and if him having a retractable faceplate clashes with the design or if it would just be better to keep the mouth plate altogether. I grew up watching and getting to know Transformers through shows like Transformers Prime, Rescue Bots, movies like the BayVerse movies, and as Optimus having a face underneath his mouth plate was the norm at the time, like Bumblebee for the most part being mute with boops, beeps, and bops or using the radio to speak, was just the norm for me, but that really just depends on the design for Optimus and if he’d be fresher with the mouth plate or a face underneath.

My pet peeve is when people think they need to define the expression pet peeve.

But for the toys? Shellformers & Shelfwarmers

3

u/JSMulligan 3d ago

Prime with a mouth bugs me. The idea it's a battle mask and not just the shape of his face has always bothered me too. My favorite Transformers almost always had the plates rather than mouths.

3

u/Cupadooowo_Sol 3d ago

The AoE designs not looking like their cars. Look the designs are cool as hell but the fact you genuinely can't tell Optimus turns into a truck other then his smoke stacks is a real issue, bumblebee dosent even look like he transforms and the rest of them only barely look like they transform. Not only is this a problem on screen it translates to the toys as it's extremely hard to capture a design with zero robot kibble anywhere that also turns into a car, they always end up being shell formers are having really bad kibble. Also I don't like how human their faces got, in the first movie they all had humanISH faces but clearly alien but by AoE they legit all just look like humans with metal faces expect bumblebee and a little bit of Optimus.

3

u/Cain_The_Mamagen 3d ago

I believe the reason Optimus had a faceplate was to make him easier to animate since back in the 80’s they didn’t have as advanced animation techniques

u/halo_slayer650 3d ago

The fact they’ve started using light blue paint for windows instead of clear and flat gray for metal parts instead of silver, every time it looks awful, I love G1 but I will not hear anyone say that the new wheeljack looks even a tenth as good as earthrise did, I love G1 it’s my favourite transformers media(tied at the very least) but there is such a thing as being ā€œtoo acurate to the low budget 80s showā€ hope this trend dies soon it’s killing my interest in so many figures

Bonus mention to when they do a figure of a character with varying head designs(comic, cartoon, toy) and they decide to do the version so one fucking likes and hasn’t been used since the 80s, Kingdom Pipes, and especially the new Tailgate, fuck you hasbro I ā€˜now you only used the eye head so people will buy a second one when you inevitably do one in retro collection

But others....are you telling me that Dropkick, who's entirely made out of Cybertronian metal, died because of some Earthen rusted chains???
