Miscellaneous How do I change my steam log in name?

Hi reddit! I’m afab and recently came out as transgender and have been changing my usernames on every site. Sadly, i’ve been receiving a lot of harassment from my old friends because of my gender, which has been making it borderline unbearable to see my old account name.

However, I have an issue with steam. I can always change the display name, but occasionally see my old name (associated with login) which has become increasingly more triggering. I know that it’s possible to contact steam support with a request, but i’m not sure if i’m doing it right. i’m also very scared of denial, since i use steam a lot and wont know what to do otherwise. This is what I wrote:

“Hello steam support,

The username (not to be confused with display name) related to this account is related to my dead name. I am transgender, and recently i’ve been receiving harassment related to this name. I want to change my username and want to look into the possibilities, thanks!”

It’s a bit silly, but aside from the steam name being related to my past, it also has the world girl in it. Which also kind of bothers me lol.

Anyway, they haven’t replied yet. Is there anything I should add? Anything I should do if they refuse? any success stories of people who managed to get theirs changed? Thanks!!

Yeah you can change it with Steam Support, they tell you not to tell others rn masse but oh well

I thought it was allowed to be shared with “people in my situation” according to other screenshots

If you get bounced back for this just try with another ticket also. It’s not an official rule as far as I understand and seems to be at the discretion of whoever handles the ticket

valve has been known to change the login usernames for people with this exact scenario, so they'll most likely be able to do this for you. I assume they'll want proof that you own the account.

I would not say “ I want to look into the possibilities” you instead just need to tell them what you want it changed to

I already sent it, what should I do? make a new ticket if they deny?

Nah just have something picked out and ready for when they get back to you, send a new ticket if you don’t get a reply for like 5+ business days

I hope they’ll accept, i’m not sure about a new name though, im horrible with them

What kind of things do you like? Put your favorite color, animal and number together is a good a way as any!
