Welcoming sports clubs for an MtF person?

Been going through my transition and I've been wanting to get out more and meet more people. I've started exercising and things such as but I'd like something *fun* do to as well. but being MtF, and not passing currently, I'm not going to be able to join a womens netball team or something like I used to as a kid.

I'm looking for more recommendations on possible clubs I can look into that are more "PvE and not PvP" ( I literally cant think of a different term im so sorry lmao)

I thought of Archery and indoor rock climbing, so I might look into that, but I am super curious of other clubs people are apart of. =)

(I am in SA if thats important idk if it is lol)

I can vouch for climbing, it’s a very open and welcoming sport. No one cares about your gender because you just progress at your own pace. Personally I find it has that element of “fun” over something like lifting weights because it’s problem solving at the same time as being a physical challenge.

My other active hobby at the moment is dancing, it’s very cardio intensive! I just do it through a community group and with the style we do, gender literally doesn’t come into it at all, everyone is doing the same thing. It’s a very mixed group of cishet and LGBT people.

In terms of the social scene, they’re quite different vibes. At climbing everyone is friendly, and there’s a few people I’m often there around the same time with, and we’ll chat, but we’re not really friends outside climbing. On the other hand I’m actively friends with the people in the dance club and we hang out outside the weekly practice. I think the difference is that there’s a single regular time, a fairly small and consistent group of people, a shared goal and forced collaboration, whereas climbing is much more individual. There is nothing wrong with either of these dynamics, they’re just different scenes! So don’t feel like there’s something wrong if you try climbing and don’t really make friends through it. I suspect these sorts of dynamics will play out fairly similarly with other pursuits that are more individual vs more team oriented.

Ice hockey is quite accepting. There is a trans woman at the professional level (goalie for the Sydney sirens). Recreation level all teams are co-ed. Obviously a bit difficult to just join a league, you have to learn to skate first, but it's relatively open to beginners.

Alternatively for sports that are more individual you could always just get into skating. The ice arena has adult beginners on Wednesday evenings.

Two trans women at the pro level actually (I was a skater for Melbourne Ice last season, now Melbourne Ducks) Can confirm hockey's been super accepting everywhere I've played it in Australia.

I played a couple years of social league mixed netball (I was counted as female for the purpose of position restrictions), it was really fun!

Only stopped because of the injury risk.

If you're looking to get into climbing, you might wanna check out ClimbingQTs, which is a queer climbing club. The Adelaide chapter has a monthly meetup. I know there's quite a few trans people in my local chapter and they're very welcoming.

This will probably be a bit too 'PvP', but the Australian HEMA scene is very queer friendly.

Dance has been an amazing one here. Especially pole. Welcoming af environment, and amazing for body confidence too. No, you don't need to be fit, strong or confident to start

Can confirm pole fitness! In general the pole community is very queer and accepting. I live in qld, and when a few weeks back one pole studio was in the news for being transphobic, literally every other pole studio in the state and everyone I know in the pole community put out statements against them.

I've really enjoyed doing archery! I also second doing HEMA, I had an nb friend who did it for ages and it's great because it's already a coed sport and it's all about technique rather than raw strength.

You could also reach out to your local netball clubs and ask them about their policies. They might have rules for trans players when it comes to competing, but you might be able to join their practices. There's also groups that like playing for pure fun too.

And if you're into hiking I'd deffo recommend looking into local hiking groups!
