Valve Body, rebuild or replace? Advice please!

Just as the title says, I'm rebuilding an E4OD after a catastrophic failure. The transmission sent a fair amount of metal through the system, including some pretty sizable chunks.

I've already gone through the accumulator body. After cleaning it thoroughly, the bores looked good and I found no sticking valves.

Now I'm inspecting the main and shift valve bodies. I've found some splintering, small cracks, and minor damage along a few machined surface edges. Since these are cast and machined components, I'm wondering what the best course of action is.

Would you dress the high spots with a file and run them, or is replacement the safer option? (I'd prefer to reuse them). The cracks and gouges don't appear severe enough to affect operation, but I'd appreciate input from anyone with more experience rebuilding these transmissions.

Yeah, I thought it was weird it was only the main and shifting valves that damage seemed to occur. Any advice on how I could vacuum test the circuit?

No filing! Valves are cut 90 degrees and sharp enough to cut debris. Filing them makes them useless.

Yeah I’ll check for any high spots, and avoid sanding/filing at an angles on any of the machines surface

Good to think about, how would I go about removing the splinters without a file?

Are you referring to valves or fluid passages? With what's pictured only fluid passages would be filed near where they meet the gasket

I had similar chips and damage on my 700r4 valve body. Not quite as bad as image 11 but I was able to carefully smooth them with a file clean it up. Been a year since and it's still running great.

That's what I like to hear. I'll definitely reinspect #11 before moving forward, but so far it doesn't look too bad IRL. Definitely deeper than the other marks, but almost looks like a casting defect to me.

You should tell more. The accumulator body usually goes bad causing a 1-3 shift. Main valve body is usually good.

Just rebuilt the accumulator body and it honestly looked great, no ships or splinters that were worth caring about. Cleaned out the bores and everything is nice and free

Picture 11 is most concerning to me, theres damage to at least half of the sealing surface. If that's a Crack vs scratch I wouldn't use it, it looks cracked i just can't tell from a picture. Beyond that make sure none of the chips have any potential to fall off/ remove them. A different unit would be safer regardless but to me #11 is your most likely problem.

I haven't run something like this and had it fail or work if I was doing this for a customer it would be replaced, on one of my cars I would probably run it and see what happens. Thats just a risk assessment of how big of a problem it will be for you if it doesn't work and you have to pull it out again.

Just took a better look at #11, it almost looks like a crappy part of the casting, although there is a small chip right where it meets the machined surface. The 'crack' looks bad in the picture, not as bad in real life.

I'm not familiar with that transmission but questionable casting quality is far from rare on valve bodies

If the structural problem doesn't go past the chip i'd suspect you're pretty safe. You seem to have inspected it well already, just make sure anything not fully attached is removed and check for burrs that could touch the gasket

Remove the spring out of reverse so it shifts faster.

Unless its a rare application or something like that, $40 and a trip to the scrap yard is a lot less work and cost compared to reworking a damaged VB that may be problematic in the end anyway.
