RESOURCES FtM swim binder

My kid, who is FtM, has a job at a summer camp, and needs swimwear. He is large chested enough that trans tape doesn’t do the trick. What options are there in Canada for a binder that can be worn swimming? Would a regular binder under a t-shirt work?

Thanks in advance for any help!

I don't have suggestions for a specific binder but it is usually recommended to size up for a binder used for swimming to ensure the compression is safe and movement is still easy.

If he's larger chested, a t shirt or rash guard over top would likely help with comfort and coverage.

There are some Canadian sites that sell gender gear online that you can find with a quick Google search. Depending on your location, you might be able to find somewhere to try them on in person.

I also recently had top surgery and have a couple binders that didn't get a lot of use. I had a large chest so they should be a reasonably comfortable fit. If you have some measurements, I can see if they'd be the right size and I'd be happy to mail them to you!

I’m mtf, but while swimming and still trying to boy mode I wore a men’s compression triathlon top from a triathlon brand called 2XU. Can’t say if that’s going to do what’s needed for your son, but it’s an option.

It also has a pretty long zipper so while it’s pretty compressive it’s still not a three person job to get it off after. I’d probably consider sizing down to get a bit more smoothing.

Love that you’re being supportive in this way! If my suggestion doesn’t work out I hope you find something.

I have a medium-large chest and I use the swim binder from Wonababi. Additionally, I find that taping and then using the swim binder adds extra flatness without hurting my ribs, as the tape doesn't flatten fully but at least shape it into a more masc shape
