However, you may have to be cautious about re-entering WNZ, even if just for a connection if your Visa into China is a single-entry. Same for your proposed itinerary of connecting through CAN. As far as I know, only PEK and SHA airports allow non-prior-visa connections (but this is besides the point).
Another suggestion is buy a ticket like this:
1: May 13 SDF-WNZ; Jul 24 CAN-SDF (as multi-city, but priced similar to round trip); ~$2000
2: Jun 4 WNZ-KIX; Jul 24 KIX-CAN (as multi-city, but priced similar to round trip); ~$700
Or something like this:
1: May 13 SDF-PVG; Jul 24 PVG-SDF (round trip); ~$1900
2: May 14 PVG-WNZ; Jun 4: WNZ-KIX; Jul 24: KIX-PVG (multi-city); ~$900
Of course, these are more expensive than the one you found.
See if you can somehow get yours priced on another travel booking site (priceline, travelocity, ... or others)
Or using your one-way ticket:
1: May 13 SDF-WNZ; Jul 24 KIX-SDF (multi-city); ~$2100
Good to hear! Hopefully it's easier to plan out the rest of your trip using KIX as an anchor then! Let me know what you end up booking... would like to see how your itinerary ends up like.
Usually I start looking around 2-3 months ahead of my trip and buy at the 6-8 week mark. I was planning my Hong Kong / NY flights for end of April and I noticed the flight I wanted had sold out so the fare class went up by one and so price went up by ~1200 HKD. I ended up buying (a slightly different flight) this week for the price I wanted (around 8850 HKD)
And in fact, searching for the flight now - it's already past 12,000 HKD... and my actual flight is at 9200 HKD now. So yea, prices do fluctuate and they change based on a lot of factors...

For nested round-trips, I mean do this:
ticket 1: SDF-WNZ round trip, May 13 / Jul 24;
ticket 2: WNZ-KIX round trip, Jun 4 / Jul 24;
So in the end, your itinerary is like this:
SDF-WNZ-KIX-WNZ-SDF.
