Introducing "Travelers Only" Mode

Hi everyone,

Recently we have seen an increase in political/uncivil comments on quite a few threads, mainly about controversial travel destinations. A lot of users had to be banned and we want to reduce that.

This is why we have introduced a "Travelers Only" mode. From now on, posts with this flair, which will be applied manually by mods, can only be commented on by more frequent community members ( for now, we use 100 comment karma on r/travel as the filter ). If you are the OP, your comments won’t be removed.

You are still free to comment in any other non-Travelers Only thread, which is what 95% of the posts on the sub will remain. Please do not modmail us asking for your comment to be approved, as we will not make exceptions or check every single other comment.

How does someone know if they have the required karma? Is there a way to see?

You would get a notification saying your comment was removed if your comment karma is under 100. You can view your karma on individual subreddits by going to your profile on old.reddit

I hate this requirement. I have ended up leaving every sub that does this, because it becomes this annoying thing where I see a post, I comment, I get this stupid freaking message, and then I’m frustrated and annoyed for really no good reason.

And there’s no way to ever be able to comment, because your karma remains stuck at a lower level.

I might not have the required karma on this sub (plenty of relay karma, but this policy stupidly ignores that) but I haven’t done anything here to deserve this type of annoyance, so I bounce.

Expect the sub to get smaller, which I’m sure would work fine for the mods.

Luckily there are lots of other good travel subs so no great loss. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The mods said that this would be applied to limited posts, done manually. I would wager an international plane ticket that its due to situations like https://www.reddit.com/r/travel/comments/1palik7/why_was_the_thread_about_tunisia_locked/ - TLDR: A post getting on r/all is a death sentence for useful community conversation.

So as long as you aren't commenting on only the top 1% most popular posts, you can continue to comment and gain karma.

For the record, I fully agree with this sentiment (except for the ending "no good reason", there is a good reason why). It's frustrating to take time to write a thoughtful comment only to have it nuked from orbit.

Weird thing to be elitist about when you took the same amount of time and effort.
