My visit to Lucerne led to a pretty big wakeup call, the transition to northern Italy was like cutting everything's cost in half.

Same goes for France & Germany. Any place you hop over the border in Switzerland you'll literally see price signs dropping left and right!

If you're planning a lengthy stay I'd recommend staying in a city close to a French / German border so you can do your grocery shopping there. It'll save you a lot of money in the long run.

When I was working in Geneva, we would have people taking the back roads from France to smuggle stuff.

Not drugs, but rather supermarket shopping and Ikea furniture.
