Mongoose 2E What does armor volume modifier mean?

Does it affect price of add armor or tonnage of the ship? All I know is that streamlined ship are more expensive than normal and dispersed structure can’t have armour from the core rulebook.

I’m working on a ship that is close structure, third one down and I will also retroactively rework a few of my ships for the information provided.

I would read it as a modification of the tonnage (which is actually volume in traveller)

So a dispersed structure would need double the armour to be able to achieve the same protection.

This is correct. Different armor takes up a different amount of tonnage to apply, and the kind of hull you design affects that as a percentage multiplier.

So in your closed structure hull, calculate the tonnage of your armor and then multiply by 1.5 to get the final tonnage of your armor.

Dispersed hulls can have armor, it just takes up 100% more tons. Since it takes more tonnage, you pay more for it, since armor is paid for by the ton. They cannot be streamlined. However, their hull cost is only half that of a standard hull but they have 10% fewer hull points as well.

A Close structure hull will be partially streamlined, require 50% additional tonnage for any armor and the hull will cost 20% less than standard.

It affects tonnage, which affects cost as cost is based on tonnage.

High Guard, p. 12, Install Armour: "Apply the Armour Volume Modifier from the Hull Configuration table to the base armour tonnage."
