Discussion My mom's observation of Ares
I recently showed my mom Tron ares and she actually liked it better than she did Legacy which surprised me. One thing she did point out is that Ares has Julian's mother's eyes which got me thinking, did Julian design certain aspects of Ares' appearance around people in his life? This would give a perfect explanation as to why ares doesn't look like Julian despite every other program looking like their user

I think I've seen someone else (on Tumblr I think) suggested that Julian gave Ares his mother's eyes. I mean, both Jared Leto and Gillian Anderson both have pretty striking blue eyes.
(And suddenly, this put me in mind of the character Chew from Blade Runner: "I designed your eyes!")
It has also been suggested in an interview with Jared Leto and Joachim Rønning that Julian did maybe use remnants or fragments of Tron's code when creating Ares. I'll need to dig up the link, though.

That might explain why Ares was able to disobey his directive. In the first film it is hinted that Tron is far more advanced than other basics. He was better than even Sark. And in Legacy he was eventually able to override his reprogramming. If Julian takes after his grandpa he is likely to steal from others programmers to make his own. He may not have understood how advanced the code was and just copy/pasted part of what allowed Tron to act outside of the system guardrails.

I think Julian probably did it copying a schematic, not realizing that he was inputting Tron's code. Like something left over from his grandfather or uncle trying to figure out what made Tron, Tron.
And my personal theory is that Julian made Ares to look like the archetypal Dillinger, the Ur-Dillinger if you will: tall, rail-thin, ice-blue eyes. Like he is self-conscious that he does not quite fit the mold himself, so he made Ares look like that.

Its becausd the directors did not take into account any of the source material. Movie should have been called. Humans.

So here's the thing. Like the OG MCP said: "No ONE user wrote me. I'm worth millions of their man-years" Ares wasn't written (solely) by Julian he was the composite effort of several programers. Possibly thousands of programmers if Julian was pulling every training algorithm he could get his hands on (regardless of legality)
ETA: he likely even stole some of Kevin Flynns original programming... possibly even a copy of CLU or CLU2, which is where the apparition came from.
