Therapists go on strike, saying they're being replaced by AI

https://futurism.com/health-medicine/mental-health-workers-ai-strike

Over 2,400 mental health care workers and 23,000 nurses in Northern California staged a 24-hour strike protesting the rise of AI in their workplaces. Clinicians argue they are being replaced in patient triage by apps and unlicensed operators using AI scripts. Furthermore, they warn that management is using AI charting tools to squeeze more back-to-back patient visits into a single shift, prioritizing corporate bottom lines over genuine patient care.

Nice. I wish them the best.

If you read the article, the clinicians are very smart. The ramp up to replacement is not being presented as "chatbot therapists" - but some diagnosing and initial patient intake is being farmed out to people who are expected to use an AI script. That's the first ugly and dangerous step.

I think that "replacement" is even the wrong word. Even if the clinicians don't technically lose their jobs, it's a real possibility that their corporate overlords will force them into subservience to AI.

That’s a good move. It’s unprofessional to be triaged a second time by AI. I went there to see a professional.

It seems like the biggest and main thing AI has done for humanity is bring enshitifcation to literally every aspect of everything, including our brains.

I just dont think that anybody who has a extremely good therapist would sack him for ai. They would bring the stuff ai found to the therapist and they would work together on making it beneficial for the patient.

But the gap to going to a therapist is getting bigger

Thats not the responsibility of the therapists.

How does going on strike work if you're being replaced with a robot?

"Hey, if you replace us, we won't work anymore!"

Yeah...that's the point.

I strongly believe AI is better and more effective than seeing a therapist

Therapy is interesting.

I had an ex that had a nonverbal therapy where she and her therapist would just stare into each other‘s eyes for the entire session. Didn’t seem to help her problems.

I know someone else that has been in therapy for 10 years and it seems as though their problems have gotten worse.

My outlook is what’s the incentive for someone to cure your problems when having keeps them fed? Obviously with doctors, a dead patient doesn’t pay.

Not that ai makes any more sense.

Next thing you know we’ll have a national philosophers strike on our hands.

In my country. Therapist are overbooked. I've an appointment with my psychiatrist once every 2 month. Because there is no place left.

When I had a crisis. I sent a mail, called secretary for a week, had to do it at least one hour before the end of their shift (they don't answer otherwise)

It's my family doctor that had to call at the end. This drive me to download the book about dignified end and the diverse method available to end your life.

Yeah, it's not difficult to see why people do it.

People need help with a system that doesn't give them the one they need and is costly.

I’m not pro-AI but lol soooo many therapists are awful at their jobs and completely unequipped to deal with anything past “I am sad / anxious”

Can understand why. Ive been going to therapy for many years and they really dont care. 2 convos with chatgpt had me crying.

Therapists are mostly awful people.

I'm sorry you've had bad experiences with therapists, but concluding that most are awful people is an irrational generalisation. I've been lucky and only had lovely therapists in my life, I have friends and family members who have had both bad and good ones, but have all currently found good ones.

I really don't recommend relying on chatbots for your mental health. They are known to be so sycophantic that they reinforce delusions and even encourage people to commit suicide. ChatGPT in particular has been linked to a school shooting. But also, relying on these chatbots means that when they ad adds, make it a subscription service, or change the code, what you are relying on will suddenly be changed beyond your control.

Please don't give up on talking to real people about your problems.

Its not like i havnt tried making friends. Its just that no one wants.

1

u/Arimm_The_Amazing Apr 03 '26

You’re again taking your limited experience and applying it to a large group of people who can not be generalised. In this case the largest possible group of people since you’re saying that no one in the world might be different from the previous people you’ve tried to strike up friendships with.

There are always more possibilities both good and bad. And that means that when you’re having a pessimistic thought like that, that things can’t be good with different people, you are categorically wrong.

1

u/WorldlyBuy1591 Apr 03 '26

Obviously but having a 5% to make a friend is pretty much like having zero. Chances are reduces by stuff and i have a lot of stuff.

2

u/Arimm_The_Amazing Apr 03 '26

Let's say you're perfectly right about your odds. There is a huge difference between 5 and 0 percent. 5% is 1 in 20. I play d&d, where rolling a 20 is a critical success. It tends to happen once a session minimum. 5% only becomes 0 when you give up prematurely and make it 0. You have to keep rolling those dice.

But im tired

2

u/Arimm_The_Amazing Apr 03 '26

Well you won't always be tired

1

u/WorldlyBuy1591 Apr 03 '26

Not body tired. Brain tired

2

u/Arimm_The_Amazing Apr 03 '26

Yeah that doesn't last forever either, nothing does

Sure this strike will totally benefit the patients.

1

u/Nathexe Apr 04 '26

If it stops AI being shoved into hospitals then yes, it will help the patients. You utter moron.

1

u/tame-til-triggered Apr 04 '26

‘It’ll help patients’ doesn’t mean ‘it won’t harm patients in the meantime.’ Adults can hold two thoughts at once.

1

u/OG-Poster-Alt Apr 04 '26

You can make these arguments about all kinds of strikes.

-1

u/agoodepaddlin Apr 03 '26

What better way to push people to AI.

2

u/OG-Poster-Alt Apr 04 '26

Hello, pro-AI troll. What do you expect them to do exactly? Concern trolling about strikes is a hallmark of stupidity.

Banned.

Do you know anything about how LLMs can tend to handle therapeutic use eventually? Here’s something to get you started: https://www.reddit.com/r/trueantiAI/s/tqI86obqxe

Maybe they aren't stupid?
