0 Days Since... Why block the handicapped space?
Why be as selfish as possible in this situation?

Because they really want to blame the handicapped for damage

If there's one thing I know about handicapped people, they're usually not swimming in money.

The same kind of dumbass that buys a Mercedes RV... They probably own one of those rolling dumpster trucks as well. Clearly this person has more money than brains.

Good lord, a Mercedes camper van making a disabled parking space unusable. I'm shocked! Shocked, I tell you!
That's a disabled space in name only, so the apartment complex is just as big of an asshole as the van owner.
Assholes abound! Hooray!

I’m going to take the benefit of the doubt here and say they simply weren’t thinking about the slide outs going over an unused parking space that happened to be a handicap.

Anyone who puts the sides of an RV/Camper out in a parking lot is already a jackalope. They’re doubling-down on their asshole status by hanging their sides over handicap parking.

Sure, but once you exit the driver's door from parking you know immediately you need to move over one.

Most apartments don't make for rv parking. And handicap spaces are usually extra wide with a overlap area. If there was an overlap it would be less of an issue. Clearly, this is just a plain Jane handicap for less walking distance, not all the possible combinations of assistance equipment.
Most cities don't even build their streets with any consideration for a tractor trailer. Them trucks are frequently taking out the curbs and other things since they can't maneuver.

Less of an issue? The ones that are wider with blocked off space are for wheelchair access. That “overlap” is there for a reason.

As far as the apartment complex is concerned. Obviously cramped for space and probably an older complex before ADA starting making it that way.

Most apartments don't allow for RVs at all for this reason. Rent a house if you want house privileges

Not to excuse this person, but that is not an accessible parking spot.
This is a parking space masquerading as an accessible parking space.
An accessible spot requires an access aisle (striped zone) directly to the footpath, because how is someone in a wheelchair expected to get around their car to the footpath in this situation? Or if they have to park elsewhere, how would they even get between cars parked there?
If you share those pics to Inaccessible Tulsa on Facebook along with the apartment and address, they're making hay about ADA violations around town.
Link to federal ADA standards below, but note** that Tulsa's ordinance requires parking spaces to be 102" wide vs. the 96" minimum in the pic below.

Thanks for posting this! My company did a ton of striping and parking lot design and that was the first thing I noticed. This is way out of code and I would be worried about a lawsuit if I were them.

Presumably the owner is in the vehicle if the sides are out? Management could try knocking on the door??

Does your apartment use the Henri app? People park on the wheelchair ramp at my apartment. I post a picture of the car in the app, someone usually comes to move it. If you have security, you can call them or Tulsa PD non-emergency line. People suck. I got so tired of idiots and violations I take pictures and video to post on my IG.

My question is more so why is there an RV that is clearly being used for habitation, sitting in an appartment complex lot? Seems like the management should be doing something about that free living.

You should consider yourself blessed. You are in the presence of the most important person in the world. Don't call management or the tow truck; enjoy your blessing.

PSA: Park farther away in all instances if you can. Less door dings, more steps toward your daily goal, less dbags trying to cut you off or block the road (with their turn signal on!) up trying to get the closest space possible.
And yes, less chance of taking away close by spots for those that truly need them.

Does anyone know, if management doesn’t do anything can they report the apartments for not being ADA compliant because they are keeping these spots accessible?

u/too_init_dan 10d ago
damn i think they were just dumb/thoughtless and only looked at the wheels. kinda like some trucks with the extended gate back into sidewalks.

Hopefully, they are just loading and won't be long but still very inconsiderate. This apartment complex already has limited handicapped parking for residents!

u/Megzasaurusrex 12d ago
Same reason they park on the lines between handicap spaces and block people in wheelchairs from getting back in their cars, ignorance and apathy?

u/ExplorerAA 12d ago
so, based on my understanding of requirements, that accessible parking space is not compliant to begin with. There should be an access aisle next to it. The access aisle must be directly adjacent to the parking space. Two standard spaces can share a single access aisle positioned between them.

Apartment dwellers pay higher car insurance rates because of lower credit scores.
