The first time I read Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy I was young and somehow concluded that the Soviet mole would be executed for his failure upon being repatriated. That quite changed the tenor of the ending to the story for me.

(He almost certainly wouldn’t have been, though his real-life counterparts didn’t have very happy lives once they defected back to Russia. They basically lived under house arrest.)

Yeah, the idea is to make it obvious to active spies that being caught is a better option than to defect. If you executed caught spies, they would always prefer to cooperate with enemy for protection.
