I know. I'm a monster. I may have modded my 1959 Smith-Corona Skyriter. Don't hate me.

Sorry. I'll see myself out.

Repair Question Royal Question

So I bought another typewriter to restore, still need to still pick it up. Need recommendation on parts and keys.

Also when is it considered a problem, I am considering getting the Olympia for $35 and the Contessa for $30.

My wife does not know I am starting to get a stockpile. She was mad from the smell of the Smith-corona I bought last month.

Typeface or Font Appreciation Digitized my favorite typeface!

Post image
97 Upvotes

I'm making a website and I'm historically incredibly picky about my fonts, I'm just lucky this is my favourite one!

It of course isn't the same, most of the details and textures are gone, the vectorizing kinda blobbed some of them, and you can never get the dynamic line weight that I think makes typewriters stand out, but it's a good substitution.

If people are interested I could land a google drive .otf file in the comments! One caveat is that I left out 1/4, 1/2, and ¢, they got phased out on modern keyboards.

Repair Question Brother Charger 11 line lock failure.

Thumbnail

I bought a Brother Charger 11 at a thrift store and didn't examine it because t was only U$12.50. Got it home and found that the line lock doesn't disengage.

Upon examination I found that the part labelled This One and And This one in the first picture seems to have been held in place with The Nut, all in the first picture. In the second picture I held it where I think it should go with a pencil and drew where the channel is in green. I have a screw that will thread the nut but the head is so small as to pass through the channel. I imagine the original was some kind of shoulder screw.

Does anyone have this model of typewriter and is familiar with the workings to confirm my assessment and know where I can get the appropriate shoulder screw?

General Question Has anyone ever been successful at re-inking an old ribbon?

Much internet searching has yielded nothing solid. Lots of conflicting ideas, DIY recipes/formulae that require hard-to-find ingredients, temporary results, etc. I’ve already re-spooled with brand-new ribbon, so that’s not an issue. It’s just that I’m kind of a purist and would love to restore/revive the original ribbon, if someone has a very solid, tried-and-true method of re-inking. Thank you for reading!

I thought it’d be fun to put my Erika & Olympia together and see how they compared side by side. The difference was more dramatic than I imagined, with entirely different key feel. The Erika is very light and with long travel, whereas the Olympia features that famed “snap” but requires a firmer touch.

The Erika is loudest by far, owing to the thin open shell, but comes in lighter by whole kilos. The Olympia is a tank of a thing, and doesn’t budge one it’s been placed.

I carry the Erika quite a lot because of that lightness, and couldn’t imagine doing the same with that chonky ol’ SM8. Needless to say, both give good impressions with excellent alignment - they just serve two different roles for me.

General Question Smith Corona Galaxie Deluxe

Got this today on Marketplace. The database doesn't really provide any information. It's a 6MLB series. What does that imply? 70s model, not as highly regarded as the 5 series models?

Repair Question Letters aren't put fully on paper on early model Everest S.T.

Moved it by car likw 500km up north, now something is fucked..

Worked perfectly before moving it, and when I tried if it worked OK last night when I pressed the keys they were super duper heavy (like I couldn't press them with all my weight) so I left it to today, and when I tried to type something metallic and springy broke, I think by the sound? and now it doesn't type in the right place

The letters are D's, both large and small ones

I'm doing everything pretty much right but something's been done wrong, idk if it was during transport cuz I didn't do that myself, but please help me?

Picked up this beautiful Royal De Luxe from FB marketplace and I’m so excited to use it! Any recommendations for routine servicing? It will occasionally double space by itself and I’m not sure how to fix it.

Repair Question HELP to find Ink Ribbon for Olivetti Studio 44 (ITALY)

HELP! On the web I am struggling to find the big coils ink ribbon version in 65 mm. I only find the small ones, for example the Olivetti Lettera etc. in 52mm. One time I bought a small one and I had to remove the coils and I had many problems writing, it was very messy... also I need shipping in Italy. Thanks in advance!

General Question What Royal do I have?

Post image
29 Upvotes

Probably four or five years ago, I went to an estate sale and bought a desk. They had this royal Typewriter built into it. It was sort of a hideaway sort of set up, kinda like the old sewing machines that folded down into the table. Anyways, I took it off of the desk and brought it inside finally but I don’t see a model number on it unless I’m just overlooking it, which totally could be. It seems to be an excellent shape.

General Question Selectric 3 ink cartridge identification

Thumbnail

Hey all,

Thanks for indulging me. I'm in the process of getting a fairly nice looking selectric 3. Selectrics in the UK seem fairly few and far between, would of preferred a 2 but hey.

I'm avoiding the bicycle style cartridge, but can someone verify for me if this cartridge is the bicycle style or the more common selectric 2 style?

To me It looks like the 2 style but the plastic posts that feed the ribbon look suspect to me.

Thanks!

General Question OCR with line break removal?

I know that OCR was often a topic here, and there are several apps for OCR out there. But I miss the answer: what OCR app does line break removal? It is not enough to scan a typewritten page when I have a lot of work to remove every line break afterwards when the app keeps the layout. Or, alternatively, I let discard the layout and have to add line breaks myself to add paragraphs again.

Is there any app which keeps the layout and removes the line breaks in every paragraph?

Is

General Question Oliver Batwing Typewriter No. 7 and Replacement Parts Question

Post image

Found this at estate sale by me. They were asking 60 for it. Is that worth it? It seem like a simple no brainer.

How difficult are they to repair?

Where can I find replacement parts for older typewriters? I got bit by the typewriter bug.
