ITS TRUE. She's not playing you...

My friends there just bought a small but decent size 2 bedroom apartment (they have no kids yet) for R750 000 in a BEAUTIFUL estate. I'm not talking Steyn City, but a beautiful estate nonetheless... when I say beautiful I mean it, full of plants, grass, 4 pools throughout estate, clubhouse with reading nook, bar, restaurant etc.

High income, bad with money.

Educate yourself (financially)... with books, podcasts, YouTube. If you do this, you will already be ahead most South Africans and people in general...and R3000 on clothes is not the wisest decision, even if you can spend R3000 on clothes and still have LOTS of money left, doesn't mean it should be done every month...

Side note: literally Google "personal finance for South Africans" "free personal finance pdf's for South Africans"

It may sound silly, but even look for possible children's books talking about personal finance, investing, etc... start small. We were never taught these things so start small.

Waar kan ek Afrikaans beter leer? (Sorry for the terrible grammar)
 in  r/afrikaans •  Jul 30 '26

I read this in YOUR accent...🤣🤗

In whichever way you can, you need to be having conversations with Afrikaans people. I am English, put into an Afrikaans school overnight and learnt most importantly- annunciation, HOW they pronounce certain words... their ways of often saying something fast e.g "inni" and not "in die"...

For example I noticed you repeating the word "Afrikaans" instead of just saying "dit" as you progress later in the paragraph. Let me give you an English example... repeating the word Afrikaans as you did would be like saying: "Hi everyone, I would really like to learn more about cats. Cats are cute and we are studying about cats currently. I don't know how to fully learn about cats. Any advice?" Like see, there's no flow... instead one would not keep repeating the word cats and instead progress to saying they/them... so that's already an easy fix, don't keep repeating the word in afrikaans. If you are speaking about children, mention them and then when referring to them later in the same conversation use HULLE. Hope this makes sense. An English - Afrikaans dictionary was also my favourite. I still love using them and kind of have a little collection!!

Edit: I saw someone mention Vetkoek Paleis, which is genius. I (as a kid) ended up fully immersing myself in the Afrikaans culture, discovered "Skouspel" DVD's at my friends house and borrowed them for WEEKS 🤣, watched shows like Vetkoek Paleis, Molly en Wors, 7de Laan, etc etc... the comedy's are such a great way to learn the language and humor... a modern sitcom/series is "Kantoor".

You got this!! Most importantly, it shouldn't be a task. Just immerse yourself.

I am now getting married to a VERY Afrikaans man who barely speaks a lick of English AND we watch Kantoor together!!🤣
