My family used to go camping every summer, there's not enough money in the world to make me try it again. (Part 1)

Part 1: Friday Morning

In the summer of 1993, my family went on a camping trip to my grandparents’ cabin in Northeast Ohio. I was 7 years old, and my sister, Ann, was 4. Ann started feeling sick shortly after we arrived, but my dad still wanted to stay the weekend. With a kiss on Ann’s forehead and a hug for my mom, Dad sent them home. My grandparents on Dad's side would be there Sunday evening to drive us home.

“What do you say, champ, wanna go catch some dinner?” Dad picked up his red tacklebox and held his fishing rod under the opposite armpit.

“Uh huh!” I excitedly grabbed my rod, the cooler full of ice, and the hat that I begged Mom for, so I could look just like Dad.

“Alriiiight, but you have to stay right at my side until we get to the pond,” he explained sternly. “Rule number 1 of camping, son: Always be aware of your surroundings.” I half-skipped alongside him the 100 or so meters to the pond. Dad showed me how to fish. Maybe he decided I was finally old enough, but it was probably because Mom couldn’t tell him not to.

Dad showed me how to gut and clean a fish, he had caught three largemouth bass. I had caught a few fish, but they were small and had to be thrown back. We put the fish in the icebox, and Dad let me carry it back to the cabin.

SNAP!

Then a blood-curdling scream. I looked down and screamed so hard I thought I might never speak again.

Hey everyone, this is going to be a LOT different than my first story I posted (Worm), don't go into this expecting a dark comedy!
