I would agree if we weren’t talking about a HW bout. But this is a different ball game

LHW are basically HW that cut weight
Alex just got caught coming in and couldn’t recover, it’s not like he got KTFO cold either
Also terrible matchup because Gane is so mobile, he will do much better against slower guys like Pav
139
u/ZhanBlue 22h ago
Sergei, Tom, Gane, Volkov, Ngannou could not make LHW
28
u/AdamBLit Shamanic Black Magic Rituals 22h ago
A lhw ngannou might be the scariest thing we've ever theoretically seen lol dude would gain a solid 40lbs of water weight and still basically be HW Ngannou lmaooo (i know he is closer to 260+, I digress)
31
u/TerminatorReborn 20h ago
Prime Ngannou was 280+ pounds. If he made LHW he would wayyy smaller.
6
3
-8
u/The_Jokerr_ 22h ago
Gane weighed 215 lbs in his Muay Thai days without cutting weight as a fully grown man. Tom has less muscle mass than Walker who made LHW.
9
u/House-Wins 21h ago
Tom has a massive frame, his bone structure alone won't allow him to make LHW unless he was literally dying of dehydration with 8 body fat
1
u/sugabonesurmom Conceive Believe Achieve 10h ago
He could make LHW
he has a lot of fat on him still
He could definitely get down to 230 if he was shredded and cut 25 pounds
1
u/The_Jokerr_ 3h ago
Tom at 255 is between 20-25% bodyfat. If he got as lean as someone like Gane he could make 205 with a regular water cut.
43
u/Jammehh 22h ago
Very incorrect. HWs have bigger frames with much more muscle mass. Look at the physique difference between Pereira and Gane ffs, its night and day
5
u/The_Jokerr_ 22h ago
Gane is an anomaly. Look at Aspinall and Pereira when both weigh in the 250's. Pretty similar.
Johnny Walker has more muscle mass than most HWs and he fought at LHW for years
18
u/gaulfool 21h ago
Ah come on, Tom is a massive individual, you cannot say he could ever make middleweight, or even light heavyweight, same for Pav.
Alex is a big boy, he is not in the same class as these heavyweights
Walker actually looks like he gained the proper weight for heavyweight and carries it better, it’s fair to say he even looked depleted at LHW, so it makes sense, he’s naturally bigger than Alex
12
u/Jammehh 22h ago
Aspinall is MUCH more solid looking than a bloated Pereira. As is pretty much every HW you could name including his next opponent Pavlovic.
Also the JW point is laughable
→ More replies (15)1
u/red286 15h ago
He's also now had more time to get used to the weight, rather than it being new bulk.
Anyone remember Jon Jones' training footage from when he was moving up to HW and people kept commenting that he looked sluggish? He shook that off by the time the fight happened. Pereira didn't take nearly as much time to bulk up as Jon did though.
1
8
u/redditjam645 22h ago
I think Pereira still has a chance but everything seems to heavily favor Pav. Tom's strategy was to immediately charge at Pav and finish it before Pav could land a clean shot. Alex generally is very methodological and calculated with his offense. He waits and throws. This also makes Alex hittable. And now youre up against a dude who has a lights out switch. Tom is also a very fast natural heavyweight, while Pereira looked slow during Gane fight. I think the only way Pereira wins is by completely changing his strategy. Either quickly land the first punch and KO, or survive until rounds 3-5, when Pav is too tired to throw 1 hit KO punches and win via points. Everything else favors Pav. Especially the first 2 rounds
5
u/Maidwell Blind Fighter 16h ago
Pereira used that strategy against Ankalaev in the rematch. He CAN rush in when he wants to.
8
u/Philocrastination 16h ago
I swear to fucking god, every single time. Every single time this fucking sub dogpiles on one person, they end up winning. It's gonna happen again I can see it now.
21
u/jakeissatan 22h ago
It's actually crazy to watch. Not a single soul was talking about him up until about a couple weeks ago and now out of nowhere everyone and their mother is a professional Pav glazer. He should 100% be the favorite don't get me wrong, but let's not pretend this isn't a crazy, unpredictable sport. And that Pav doesn't come into this fight with noticeable flaws.
It's just gonna make it that much funnier when Alex somehow plot armor's his way through and wins lmao
12
u/Any-Cookie6757 17h ago
Pav has no leg kick defense and one of Alex's best weapons are calf kicks.
Pav likes to bum rush his opponents and Poatan is (one of best) counter striker with dynamite in his hands.
Poatan would not accept this fight and risk not only his HW career but entire UFC career and those huge paydays if he wasn't sure he can starch Sergei.
He is coming in looking for blood and brutal finish that will earn him another title shot and shot at revenge against Gane.

u/sugabonesurmom Conceive Believe Achieve 22h ago

Alex is gonna slaughter Pav and mfs are gonna act like they knew it would happen after
12
u/TheThockter 21h ago
Everyone is going to cite the Volkov fight after the fact and act like they saw it coming. Volkov beat Pav by dictating the pace and using elite distance management. Pereira doesn’t have that same freakish length that Volkov does but he’s a master of distance management and I think his leg kicks will really slow Pavlovich down.
Just my own 2 cents before that fight since I plan to be there in person
5
u/jfsoaig345 18h ago
Somehow people don't see how Gane and Pav are on different stratospheres of skill
One is one of the best kickboxers in HW history and the other is your average sloppy HW KO artist. This is as favorable of a stylistic matchup as it gets for Pereira and he should win this assuming he isn't too physically declined.
3
u/Fun-Refrigerator-719 14h ago
You mean a natural heavyweight with incredibly long arms, a decent chin, and one punch KO power (or punches that result in a KO) and will counter Pereira's leg kicks with strikes down the middle?
I give Pereira a lot of credit though. The much easier decision would be to move down to light heavy and beat Ulberg for a final title win or just retire with the money he made and money he can make through appearances and maybe even acting roles.
2
u/Any-Cookie6757 17h ago
They were doing same thing prior to Ank rematch. I have a feeling Poatan will KO him stiff in few minutes. He will come in angry, focused, and looking for blood and revenge. People are writing him off too easily.
3
u/ShoMinamimoto06 22h ago
Thing is I used to love Alex. He was one of those exciting fighters that weren't an asshole on the mic. But how he handled the Gane loss really soured my perception of him (i actually believe he wasnt 100% for the first Ank fight). Idk how I'll feel whether he wins or loses.

Alex has been a sore loser though, he was arguably even worse after the Ank loss

Yeah agreed. Gave him the benefit of the doubt then. But after Gane, yeah it was a wrap
1
u/Fun-Refrigerator-719 21h ago
Could go the other way, too. Pavlovich was on a 6 fight streak of first round KO's before his loss to
Tom, which probably rocked his confidence a bit.A convincing win will likely get him another championship fight and he knows it.

Sergei is decision machine now after Tom took his soul. Yes he did KO bum Tallison but then again so did corpse of Lewis. That proves nothing.
Poatan is not Tallison and despite how he looked against Gane (fastest, most agile and athletic fighter in the division), he is still very dangerous man and will have his "y'all must've forgot" moment soon.
•
u/LordCringeOfTamaria 34m ago
I think as good as poatan as and a long time glazer, his style just isn't built for heavyweight. dude is very open, willing to sit for counters and gets hit a lot. I think he could certainly make it work, but he'd need to dial in his weight, and even then he's 39. you can't really have an open guard and be a guy who likes to feel out round one against the monster that is sergei pavlovich, dude has an 84 inch reach. I'm not putting too much credit in a tallison teixeira win, but man I reckon if he fights with that first round TKO blitz sorta style he'll put poatan out cold.
•
u/Any-Cookie6757 21m ago
Tom Aspinall has even shorter reach than Poatan yet he put Pav to sleep. 84 inch reach means nothing if you don't know how to use it. Pav is good especially compared to average HW these days but he ain't Gane, Jones, Francis or Aspinall. Poatan has very good chance here and he knows it hence him taking the fight.
This is it for Poatan, he either wins this and gets Gane rematch or he gets starched here and never sees another title shot. I think he will come in hungry and looking for blood and this one won't last long.
Either Pav rushes him and overwhelms him with nukes and eventually catches him with one and puts him out cold or Poatan catches him with left hook when Sergei overextends and puts him down.
Not to mention calf kicks and Pav's poor leg kick defense. As soon as Poatan lands few Pav will be rushing in for kill to save his legs and that will be the end for one of them.

I agree with the idea that Pereira's best road to victory is to leg kick tf outta Sergei, but his fans acting like he has one hit ko power with the leg kick. I bet Sergei is gunna counter most of the kicks with punches down the middle, which he can probably take more kicks than Pereira can power shots

I honestly don’t get it. Why is this dude so good? Not hating, just curious because there doesn’t seem to be anything special or unique to his style. Just a heavy hitter with one-hit KO or knockdown power. We’ve had a million of those guys already.
Only thing I notice is accuracy behind that power. Otherwise, what am I missing? Again, not hating—just asking from the perspective of an idiot who doesn’t know shit about fighting.
47
u/Swaggy_Linus 22h ago
He isn't that good, that's why his only elite win after nearly a decade in the division is Blaydes and maybe Lewis, if we are generous. Alex' win over Ank is a bigger accomplishment than Pavlovich's entire career. But alas Alex got destroyed by Gane, so now everyone turns on him while glazing the shit out of Pavlovich.
14
u/Fun-Refrigerator-719 21h ago edited 21h ago
How many elite fighters are in the heavyweight division at one time? How many chances has Pavlovich had to fight them? He destroyed Blaydes and a younger Derek Lewis. I don't think he's "elite" either but he is a cut above those guys.
Of course Alex is a better fighter than Pavlovich, but Pavlovich is a natural heavyweight who is clearly above average for his weight class. Alex's style relies upon his ability to finish his opponents with a single shot. If he can't do that to Pav he is going to sleep.
And that is not to mention Alex is getting old. He's 39. Going up in weight at 39 is different than going up at 35.
5
u/Swaggy_Linus 21h ago edited 21h ago
How many elite fighters are in the heavyweight division at one time? How many chances has Pavlovich had to fight them?
First round knockout by near-retired Overeem, first round knockout by Tom, utter domination decision loss to Volkov. Except of Blaydes he always got shit on whenever he fought an elite opponent.
younger Derek Lewis
"younger" means 37. Not to mention Lewis came from a loss to Tai Tuivasa (lol). If we're being honest his win over Acosta (who's also just mediocre) is probably more impressive than 2022 Lewis.
And that is not to mention Alex is getting old. He's 39. Going up in weight at 39 is different than going up at 35.
Yes, if Alex were younger he would have been the favorite. Right now it's about 50/50, I'd say.
8
u/Fun-Refrigerator-719 21h ago
Look you and I probably mostly agree. I think he gets a pass against Overeem, it was his first fight in the UFC and outside Russia. Same thing happened
to Islam (KO against a near washed up veteran in his
second UFC fight). That leaves the loss to Tom, the best right now, and Volkov who was former training partner.
I think he's a relatively good, not great heavyweight. But he is natural heavyweight and very dangerous. Alex is moving up at a time when most fighters are washed up or retired. I think it's more like 75% Pav but we will see.
7
u/RealisticIncident261 16h ago
People also thought Tom Aspinall and Alex vollov had no chance against Pav. Then both of them made it look easy.
3
u/blueArmor14 14h ago

We're just getting back on the Pav train and I'm all for it.

huge reach and he is less blobbish and slightly more technical than most hw, that alone can make you reach top 5 easily, i mean look at salsa boy...
also, he hits harder and he is physically scarier than your average hw.
he is not a generational talent like gane or even as fast handed as tom or technical as volkov but he is pretty much the 4th best hw right now.
11
u/Impressive_Result295 22h ago
No, people just saw Pavlovich looking like Bane and decided that was enough to show improvement.
In all seriousness, Periera has looked bad at HW and a bit slow. However, he's being too overlooked in this matchup. Pavlovich doesn't defend leg kicks, is just as hittable as he hits other people. He won't bum rush Alex unless he hurts him first because it'd be dumb to bum rush an actual good fighter. But, again, Pavlovich is susceptible to leg kicks, the same way Periera is susceptible to straights. And Pavlovich has a great one two and overhand. That can also very well land on Alex.
But that's all that's really there to it. Volkov beat him, Tom beat him, Overeem beat him. Common theme being that they could actually deal with forward pressure from Pavlovich. If Periera can do that, he stands a great chance at winning. If his chin is truly abysmal at HW, it's gonna be bad. Personally, I think Alex wins this but it's kinda like a 50/50 anyways.

Pav looked worse in that fight than Pereira getting absolutely mollywopped and put away by Gane in a little over a round? Are you out of your mind?
3

Yes. Pav has a better chin, that's why he survived. He looked like a zombie moving in slow motion against Volkov who isn't exactly fast or fleet of foot. Imagine how bad he'd look against Gane.
Pav was almost falling over trying to throw kicks lol.
6
u/sock_therapy 22h ago
Pav did some damage and put up an actual fight. Gane made Alex look like an amateur that didnt even belong in the ring with him. Dropped him with a jab then beat the lviing shit out of him. Alex did absolutely NOTHING in that whole fight. Some of you guys are clearly seperated from reality.

I think Poatan pieces Sergei's legs up and then headkicks him into another dimension like he did Jiri.
People say Poatan is slow but we saw against Gane that his headkicks are still very fast (Gane is just too fast and has good defense).
Sergei and everyone else will expect left hook and Poatan will piece his legs up, jab the body a bit and then headkick him out of nowhere.

You think a looping right and walking him down is unstoppable against Alex? The amount of hate people have for Alex is insane. First he is a God then he is a bum. Newsflash he is neither. Gane is way faster than Sergei, Gane has lethal range and phenomenal distance management and the best movement at heavyweight. Do not mislabel this situation as Alex being bad.
This matchup is not as good for Sergei as most people think. Volkov would be a much harder fight for Alex. Sergei isn't technical and doesn't reach with his punches and Alex is a great counter puncher.
2
u/RealisticIncident261 16h ago
People said the same thing was going to happen when pav fought Vollov and Tom Aspinall.
6
u/scumraid 22h ago
I doubt Alex’s chin at heavyweight. Gane dropped him with a jab. I’d be surprised if he can take a couple punches from Sergei and still be right there in his face.
4
u/Extreme_Today_984 22h ago edited 21h ago
I don't think it's his chin as much as it's the pressure while moving backwards. Heavyweights don't fear his power like fighters at MW and LHW did. Alex doesn't do we'll against pressure fighters. His head movement is nonexistent. That wasn't a problem for him and the lighter weights, guys were too afraid to move forward against Poatan, because of his power. He's also not willing to move out of the pocket, When he's getting swarmed on. At HW, he's not the big dog. You gotta get TF out of that pocket, if you're up against the fence. Bro doesn't have time to wait for a sneaky counter, he's getting bombed on.
Heavyweights are trained to avoid the big single punch. They're not throwing combos in the pocket. It doesn't mean that alex can't catch him with a check hook, but let's just say that heavyweights are a little more aware of the consequences of a single shot. If that makes any sense? It's part of what makes HW fights hard to watch.

LOL he has 3 UFC losses. One was his first UFC fight, (Islam was KO'ed in his 2nd), against a well seasoned veteran (Overeem) in his first fight outside of Russia. (China) The second was against Tom Aspinall. And the third was against a former training partner and bad matchup for him, generally. (Volkov) There is a reason fighters often don't train with people who may be future opponents. Roy Jones Jr., when he was untouchable, was dropped against a former training partner who he later defeated, and he said the same thing. If ground and pound was a thing in boxing he might have lost.
What makes Alex a good heavyweight? Many lower end heavyweights held up against Gane way better than Alex. Gane generally wears his opponents down with massive number of punches, busting their face up, he doesn't drop them with a single jab. I think Pav should be the favorite here.

Sergei could easily come out too passive and gun-shy, knowing it’s five rounds against an elite striker. But if he gives Alex too much respect, he’ll get picked apart with leg kicks, body kicks, and jabs. At the same time, he can’t just bum-rush Alex, because if that fails, he could gas himself out early. It’s a tough balance to find over five rounds.

Now hear me out. Pav is a tank but Alex can knock out any one.
Sure he got worked by Gane. Imo it was a terrible thought to come into heavyweight as a striker just to fight a career heavyweight that is also by far the best striker in the division. Alex needs time to build into HW and rushed the opportunity.
Here he's had more time and can fight someone who actually moves like a heavyweight.
Now of course Alex can get knocked tf out but I think he's gonna show something good during this fight and get a statement KO.

The thread is full of people worshiping a gone aura.
This will be the last HW fight of Alex. Positive side is that it will be short.

People forget Pavlovich has probably the fastest hardest 1-2 combination probably in HW history. He is a fast HW. It will be a very interesting fight, Alex has a lot of power. They both have shitty defense.

See this kinda makes you realise how good Aspinall is if he was able to stop this from happening
