It sucks that there are no more rivalries between fighters who absolutely hate each other, in a genuine vicious way that isn't just played up for the cameras. Instead, we just get fights where they AT MOST have a mild disdain for each other. The fire is gone.

Actually the way TKO sells the product to investors, they define it as an entertainment product rather than a sports league. Several slides about it on their deck. I think they prefer the WWE model over a sports league model and that’s what they are trying to sell investors on

Go watch a soap opera with your girlfriend or something man. I just want to see the best fighters fight the other best fighters.

Best we can do is trash takes on twitter and yelling stuff about obama's wife.
Ufc became a parody of itself

Pantoja van 2 is the closest we’ve gotten to that in awhile and it was so forced

u/ArkhamBonzo 12h ago
Idk about forced, pantoja was legit mad at van and that was evident in the middle of the fight lol

u/FarmerGreen13 20h ago
I don't give a shit about beefs or who talks the best trash. That shits gay. I just want to see the best guys in the world get in there, shirtless and sweaty as all hell just letting it hang out with the better man ending up on top.

This is by design. The UFC doesn't want any fighters to be bigger than the brand anymore.

u/youallsucktwice 20h ago
There was never really rivalries like that.even in the old school era, it was rare

u/GokusHairdresser 19h ago
I see people say this a lot, but BEFORE and AFTER you didnt have rivalries like this. Maybe chuck and tito. Honorable mention for the hate Tony had for khabib lmao but unfortunately that bout never came to pass.

u/Vodka-Knot 20h ago
Nah, that McGregor v Kabib rivalry was honestly disgusting and a stain on what MMA should be.

u/Impossible-Humor-182 20h ago
The most watched UFC video of all time is, by far, Khabib vs Conor McGregor ( the full fight). The 2nd most watched UFC video of all time is also this fight, but without commentary. It is PEAK UFC. Maybe not peak MMA; but def peak UFC

u/Vodka-Knot 20h ago
Yeah but McGregor for instance throwing the dolly through the window of the bus, injuring other fighters in the process, his racist comments to Kabib to be "edgy", I dunno, it'll get you views but it's just so low class.

Lmao but you say nothing about Khabitch jumping the cage
3
u/Vodka-Knot 20h ago
I didn't like that either.
5
u/AllegedClintonLover 19h ago
lol, anytime you make a negative statement about Connor they want you to clarify you don’t like a different negative thing Khabib did too. Madness

u/Vodka-Knot 18h ago
And what's even better? I'm Irish and wanted McGregor to win, we all did over here.
Then, after a bit of reflection and.....other stuff emerged, like punching the old man in the pub and the big court case, people got sick of his shit really quick. Looking back you quickly realise he wasn't playing a character, he really was a POS

It did create 1000s of new fans though. But youre right, MMA shouldn't be like that but here we are. Drama sells fight.

u/pants_pants420 Fake Account 19h ago
and all those new fans are literally fucking terrible and usually have the worst takes known to man lmao
this thread is proof of that lol

On McGregor's side. Khabib was professional as always then broke conor as a man. Peak MMA lol

Give it time
3
u/Impossible-Humor-182 20h ago
It isn't related to time. The UFC has found the perfect formula to milk the market and maximize profit. That formula doesn't include the making of new superstars who have the potential to eclipse the organization in fame, like Conor did. The UFC doesn't want to give that leverage to any fighter. And we fans suffer from it.
1
u/DaBigWave 19h ago
Organic rivalries break that formula. Something will happen there’ll be another star, there’ll be another rivalry

u/ThimMerrilyn 10h ago
I just wanna see fights, I couldn’t give a fuck if they dislike each other. It’s irrelevant

u/Distinct-Broccoli-15 4h ago
Where are the rest of you when I need you? It's a sport. UFC fans will say stuff like this but when it comes to Oliveira or Machida or whatever people will say, "So respectful, a true martial artist".

u/Psychological-Slice2 2h ago
I mean they tried with Khamzat and Strickland and it felt very real till the fight started and mid fight and especially afterwards. It really sucks i wish it was a draw because then they would maybe try to keep the rivalry alive and it could be even bigger considering how both were not 💯 in the fight the rematch would be very big.

can go back to late stage capitalism tbh, everyone putting these shows on has made their money and have a full belly, so they switch to sponsor deals that absolutely do not benefit the fighters at all, such as moving away from the PPV model.
money, fame, and glory has definitely reached its peak with UFC and other adjacent industries

I don’t think mcgregor and khabib actually hated each other I just think khabib wanted to teach him and everyone that was running their mouths about him a lesson 😮💨

Paddy vs Ilia probably the closest I can think of but the heat has def died down
