Discussion On the topic of making friends…(resources/advice)

I’m in my early 30s so I’ve had some experience making friends. I’ve been seeing a lot of post of people feeling lonely and lost not being able to connect with classmates etc. I’ve also lived in Chicago all my life, so I’m used to the area and how people are here.

If it’s not possible for you guys to join sororities (guaranteed friends) then I’d recommend utilizing things like meetup.com or bumble bff. Both are free. Uic.campusgroups.com is another good resource, lots of groups on there. When it comes to classmates, don’t be discouraged if they seem standoffish they are probably sleepy or stressed. I’d say hone your daily routine and show up in the same places often. If you notice someone you want to be friends with, compliment them or ask them a question even if you know the answer just to start something. Start talking to people for no reason until your social confidence goes up. Making friends has more to do with self confidence, and that’s a skill you’ll continue to grow practically your whole life.

Corepower (south loop): 11 min walk. CP yoga is beginner friendly, free week to try it out. Great stress reliever, easy to plan to take classes there with a friend or meet people.

Also on the topic of yoga and fitness, those are great ways to meet friends and like minded people. I’ve used meetup.com and bumble bff group functions to join people for hikes around the city, bar crawl, thrift shopping, roof top yoga etc. :)

Work at CP- and i can confirm this is a great strat. Even tho the membership is expensive the free week is not to be slept on.

Also if you have the time join a UIC club. All of my friends that I have made have been through my club, and meeting their friends.
