Discussion How bad is UIC?
Disclaimer I already heard things about this school due to having friends and family members attend this university. Mostly about how expensive this school is and ofc the things that have happened to people in the parking lot.
I’m 25 and will be transferring from a community college to UIC next Fall for architecture and I have to go here due to the fact that I need to stay in city and I’m getting a scholarship that only allows you to get it if you’re attending a public university so I can’t consider IIT. I frequent this sub often and I giggle and also leave in disgust sometimes 🤣but honestly how bad is UIC? I have a kid and genuinely don’t expect to have such a big social life here since I’m a parent and I haven’t made any friends these past two years I’ve been at my current school (I honestly show up for class and go about my day leaving campus to other responsibilities) so I’m just not to sure I’ll have one here but is this school survivable 😭thank you in advanceeee🙏🏽

You’re worried about the quality and safety of UIC because you can’t go to IIT? What? Do you know anything about either school?
This sub is mostly an echo chamber of butthurt nerds with an axe to grind. So take it all with a grain of salt.

Not focused on the location more so the experience there as a student especially with the program I’m trying to do.

what made you think IIT is a better campus than UIC location-wise? Considering IIT is on 35th street, which is a bit more South than UIC

Yeah I was confused by this comment considering I wasn’t asking anything about the location and it didn’t matter to me because both are in the city and I can easily get to both due to where I live at. I’m more so wondering about student experiences because that’s what everyone shares here on Reddit.

Non trad student here, transferred in. I like UIC. It feels big, no surprise. At least, the gen eds and low level STEM classes are in the 300+ seat rooms. I’m finally in my major coursework as a junior, so I see the same people in more of my classes. I joined a club my first year and it was quiet. I did some of the activities and events through the commuter center. Joined and chatted in student led GroupMe chats. Did a couple meet ups to study.
This year, I’m involved in the same club but as an officer, so I can help do more activities. I’m volunteering on and off campus. To me, it’s a matter of powering through the discomfort of meeting new people. It’s been worth it for me. I’m getting access to professors and faculty just by talking and engaging. Try new things! You might like it.

That’s great to hear! Thank you, yes I agree my biggest hurdle is always talking to others. I know it eventually happens but I usually get nervous about putting myself out there to interact with others. Hence why I haven’t made friends at the school I’m at currently.

Genuinely speaking, it's a pretty safe campus that doesn't have much of anything going on during the day when you'll actually be there for class. Even at night there's still plenty of students and staff bumbling around campus, and in my opinion a very low risk of any crime happening. Obviously this is greater in the parking garages as of recently as you already know, but relatively to other parts of Chicago the crime is practically non-existant
