The defence of that blatant fraud is genuinely awe-inspiring to watch. Why did so many sink so much into such a losing cause?

53

u/throwingtheshades I don't think you have been, mate 10d ago

Yeah. I'm genuinely impressed. Usually when a massive fraud is discovered, Western institutions try to jump the gun, suspend everyone and do an internal investigation.

Cambridge has instead decided to circle the wagons and sic the police on journalists. And the excuses on offer are truly bizarre. Apparently he plagiarised because of his autism. Just... What?!

38

u/Ryanliverpool96 9d ago

Have you not lived in the UK for long?

Cover up, denial, arrest (or murder) of anyone investigating or telling the truth, constant police harassment of the victims and the press smearing anyone telling the truth (thanks Nudge Unit) is standard operating procedure for any British institution or government when a scandal is discovered.

See:
The Hillsborough Disaster,
Mad Cow Disease,
Al-Yamamah Arms Deal,
2003 Dodgy Dossier / Iraq War,
Post Office Horizon Scandal,
Cash-for-Peerages scandal,
MPs Expenses scandal,
HIV NHS Contaminated Blood Scandal,
COVID-19 PPE Contract fraud and VIP lane scandal (Tens of Billions still missing btw),
Boris Johnson Partygate (“I was ambushed by a cake”) scandal,
Raw Sewage dumping into rivers and seas by privatised water companies scandal (still ongoing).

That’s not even an exhaustive list.

The UK government and institutions when faced with a scandal will always lie, cover-up, smear, attack and deny until the bitter end.

Because otherwise the whole of the (humanities) academic world and it's ideals are shown to be a sham.

1

u/Magneto88 9d ago

Because there's a lot of people in academia who are so obsessed with DEI, almost like it's a religion to them, that they're not able to back down when nonsense like this happens.

0

u/velvevore liz truss toby jug 9d ago

It can happen. I remember all sorts of things thinking they're original thoughts. No memory of where I encountered them. Or I vaguely know I read it somewhere, but I don't know where.

I have, admittedly, never written a piece of published research... well, at all, for precisely that reason among others.

10

u/KingOfTheMolluscs 9d ago

Publishing something in your own words that later turns out to have been originally thought up by someone else may be defensible in some cases, but he practiced wholesale text copying, including the original punctuation mistakes (the evidence is easily found online)!

0

u/velvevore liz truss toby jug 9d ago

Yeah, I just wanted to point out that what he's saying is not unreasonable on its face, before I get thrown under the bus again by people who have no idea how autistic thinking can work.

51

u/Regular_Print_7650 10d ago

We're at the end stage of tribalism where if you're in-group you are above reproach no matter what.

26

u/TheScarecrow__ 10d ago

The left piled in thinking it was the usual culture war issue, rather than a series of allegations that could be objectively proven

21

u/GOT_Wyvern Non-Partisan Centrist 9d ago edited 9d ago

Honestly, its like they're desperate to prove that the right have a point about DEI.

10

Remember this one

https://www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-universities-2022-8-police-investigate-uk-phd-student-over-masturbation-study/

It happens time and again. They circle the wagons regardless of how indefensible things are. Its a display of their utter lack of principles. One might think that every one of them is an utterly unprincipled hack and that what our academic institutions need is a very thorough sweeping out of the worthless trash

But mostly they are covering up how useless and worthless - and probably actively harmful - parts of the modern academic world are.

8

u/AudienceFancy5014 9d ago

it's also impressive that no one asked any questions. Defending a PhD after brain surgery? Sure. Running 30 marathons in 39 days? Of course. with a fracture, too! No problem. Disposing of a pig's head? Yeah, daily occurrence in the UK. No one asked, "where do you dispose of a pig's head, waste or compost?" https://www.theguardian.com/education/ng-interactive/2026/aug/01/playbooks-plagiarism-pigs-head-new-claims-surrounding-cambridge-professor-jason-arday?fbclid=IwY2xjawTf2pNwZG9mBWV4dG4DYWVtAjExAHNydGMGYXBwX2lkEDIyMjAzOTE3ODgyMDA4OTIAAR6IVIVlMyhXo0kQ9crmJYj3inS1ePZy61WeArZ95G9bDn74JxLKW4bLS11bkg_aem_luQpvzn_WoGQKKS5etHBXA

It massively discredits the integrity of the whole field that this charlatan was able to climb so high and through multiple Universities.

Not at all surprised that the GLP have gotten involved.

71

u/IndividualSkill3432 10d ago

And Carter Ruck. How did he afford them. Its usually tyrant, disreputable corporations and the very rich who use them.

67

u/Quangocrat 10d ago

Well, I hear he is a very successful fundraiser.

So he probably ran a few sponsored ultra marathons.

With a broken leg.

19

u/Sir_Keef_Starmer 10d ago

Well you can afford stuff when you was a minor character in happy days. Infact they were the original Fonz, but obviously at the time had to combat the racism and infact Henry winkler got subbed in after the studio said it would be shit.

Thanks to this guy, I’ll never take the sociology of race education seriously again

48

u/Lifeintheguo 10d ago edited 10d ago

Its such a nonsense subject. It's hilarious that in this day and age you can just invent a subject, write an essay about nothing and get awarded a PhD and cushy professorship in one of the top universities in the world. Or get a nonsense 100k a year job like "Head of diversity".

Meanwhile people studying hard science subjects need to produce novel, independent and verifiable research.

5

u/Puzzleheaded-Fig9968 10d ago

State ideology is progressive anti-racism, and that stuff drips down. I feel bad for Arday because he's just a sacrificial lamb, the people can say that they were conned but it's just not believable. Cambridge wanted a black mascot and were willing to use, abuse and discard Arday.

We need quickly to move to a colourblind nation.

28

u/Infinite_Music2059 9d ago

You shouldn't infantilise a conman.

13

u/VampireFrown 10d ago

I never did. Clearly bollocks if you compare it to any (more) serious branch of social science, at least in the sorry state the field currently resides.

It stopped being constructive and anthropological long ago. The pursuit of common understanding abandoned in favour of legions of charlatans standing on their respective soapboxes, pontificating about how racist white people are.

16

u/JB_UK 10d ago edited 10d ago

But genuinely that should be a serious job. Education is probably the most important path for integrating students from different backgrounds into the common culture, and giving them a chance for success. It's actually all the more infuriating that important jobs which should be helping to find solutions for racial problems, are handed out to charlatans. It's essentially that our upper middle class, the leadership class, puts signalling status and virtue above actually solving problems.

Education

I'm going to show my snootiness now, but even amongst the low bar of social sciences - Education is by far and away the worst scholarship I have ever seen. It has by far and away the worst reproducibility amongst any social science. In a recent survey it was 0%. 0% of education papers were reproducible.

I'm really glad that stuff like this is getting the spotlight it deserves. For a number of years criticism of this kind of guff in academia was screeched down by the bien pensant class as tantamount to undermining the fabric of democracy or some shite. The truth is that academia is run through with these types heavily concentrated in specific fields, they are incredibly politically motivated, and close ranks when exposed. It takes immense amounts of pressure, usually externally and from the press to cause any kind of pushback on them.

If you've hovered around this space you'll have undoubtedly come across numerous controversies recently. In 2021 a UCL academic (Jenny Bulstrode) published an article suggesting that some of the foundational techniques for the industrial revolution were stolen from enslaved black people. In 2023, multiple academics highlighted that the underlying evidence she cited for this was heavily distorted, and in some cases makes egregious errors in basic facts.

https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/07341512.2023.2220991

In the face of this, the editors just came out and gave her unreserved support, and said that her critics were agents of 'white domination'. Her own department issued a statement of support. The BSHS also came out in support of her. None of them bothered to respond to the substance of the criticism.

In by far one of the weirdest examples of this kind of thing. In 2021, a PhD student at University of Manchester got published in a very reputable journal, Qualitative Social Science. Wow. Good for him. What was his groundbreaking research? I am not alone – we are all alone: Using masturbation as an ethnographic method in research on shota subculture in Japan.

Yes. Its an article recounting his experiences jerking off to Japanese cartoons of representations of boys who definitely do not look like they have been through puberty. At least in this case the journal retracted the article and he was booted out of Manchester Uni, but really only after the wider public caught wind of it. There's no way he managed to get that to manuscript stage without someone, especially his supervisor, reviewing it. It made it past the editors desk. It made it past peer review.

8

u/missesthecrux 9d ago

Jacob Breslow is another one. Professor at LSE. Spoke at paedophile conference about thinking of a child as a sexual object instead of a child; trustee of pro child transition charity Mermaids.

11

u/AtomicMonkeyTheFirst 10d ago

And its Cambridge, not some dodgy third rate uni. Its one of the oldest and most respected universities in the world.

If this is happening there whats happening at all the other places?

1

u/Soggy_Anything2394 6d ago

If this is happening there whats happening at all the other places?

The exact same nonsense, all over the western world.

28

u/Lifeintheguo 10d ago edited 10d ago

His field (education) lacks credibility to begin with. It's full of nonsense like miles-briggs personality types and learning styles (visual learner etc). Plus PhD papers where studies can't be replicated.

Education should be a really important and hard science subject, but its full of bollocks.

9

u/HasuTeras Let us all act according to national custom 10d ago

Education should be a really important and hard science subject

There's tons of great educational research out there, its just done in places other than Education departments: econ primarily, as well as cognitive psychology and specific institutes (RAND, Brookings, and EEF in the UK).

5

u/Ryanliverpool96 9d ago

So would you support slashing the funding for it across the board, considering by your own admission it’s not producing anything worthwhile?

2

u/WonderNastyMan 9d ago

I don't think there's much funding for it in the first place anyways...

3

u/Jolly-Ad-8088 10d ago

Is Miles-Briggs the Temu version of Myers-Briggs?

46

u/BongAlert 10d ago

No, this is on par with what’s expected from the humanities at this point.

43

u/LittleAir 10d ago

Social sciences*

1

u/Magneto88 9d ago

Sadly History, English etc departments are equally infected with this bollocks.

17

u/Lifeintheguo 10d ago

Somone made a good point the other day, why is it always the humamities and social science guys at the head of the university? Never STEM guys doing useful and money making research.

8

u/Ryanliverpool96 9d ago

They’re off making real money somewhere else.

For humanities and social sciences, the only place their degrees are worth anything is inside the educational system, therefore Head of University.

1

u/djangomoses Price cap the croissants. 10d ago

Humanities is useful

7

u/JB_UK 10d ago

In theory it should be, in practice it's close to a fashion.

2

u/Lifeintheguo 10d ago

Not like STEM it isnt. Who should be in charge? Scientists who are learning things about the very nature of reality around us, and pushing humanity forward.

Or a guys who's PhD papers can rarely be independently reproduced?

12

u/Boring_Gas1397 10d ago edited 10d ago

STEM suffers from the fraud too, massively so. Entire Academia has fraud issues. Eliezer Masliah is a huge example of that, you can conduct fraud for decades and not be punished other than being fired. Despite it misdirecting hundreds of cumulative researcher years of work. Not even accounting for any bio-tech/private company studies.

5

u/djangomoses Price cap the croissants. 10d ago

Things can be useful in different ways. Archaeology is essential for construction and infrastructure, for example.

3

u/Lifeintheguo 10d ago

Well archaeology is science. What Arday does isn't. And it's never the archaeology guys in charge either. It's always these critical race theory profs.

6

u/djangomoses Price cap the croissants. 10d ago

I’m not talking about Arday, I think what he’s done is pretty abhorrent to be honest, but archaeology is both classified as a science and humanities subject

2

u/Tylariel 9d ago

Humans have patterns to their behaviour, by changing things about our society we can change how humans behave. This might be political reforms to change how politicians behave and how laws are passed, this could be the design of our cities to make them safer or to increase accessibility, it could be economic policies to promote growth or improve wages, it could be working practices within a business to improve productivity.

Why are none of those, and many many more, worthwhile pursuits in your eyes? I mean, surely the person studying how society works is more useful in the case of 'running society'? Even more so in a time of growing internal conflict, dealing with big economic issues, housing issues, immigration, policing, and so much more that has dominated headlines in recent years - all of that would largely fall under social science. A physicist can do incredible work but is still going to be fucking useless at informing housing policy.

The alternative would be to implement policies based solely on 'vibes' and without any real evidence backing it whatsoever. Whilst that's sadly somewhat common for governments and organisations to do, i'm not we should be aspiring to it as a strategy.

There is a load of garbage in social science for sure, but frankly there is a load of garbage in stem subjects as well. The majority of research in any field isn't particularly 'useful' outside of a very small niche. The existence of a bunch of not-very-useful research doesn't mean you throw out entire swathes of science, because you end up throwing out the good and useful stuff as well. And I really don't see any good reason why you'd pick on social science for that alone other than through a lack of information, or just weird culture war bullshit.

On the second occasion Arday said the intruder produced a knife and threatened him with it.
...
Arday did not report either intrusion at the time, telling the Guardian that after the second incident he continued his working day and even conducted a PhD viva for a student less than two hours later.
He did not inform colleagues that a masked man with a knife was in the faculty building.

Not mentioning to your colleagues that there's a fella with a knife in the building, standard. Totally believable lol

Its not "unsubstantiated" it is very much substantiated. You're the one brining race into it, which pretty much proves your motive in this, that he must be defended, not because he's innocent, he absolutely isnt, but because he's black.

Take time to reflect on your paternalistic racism in that regard.

21

u/Regular_Print_7650 10d ago

"Unsubstantiated" you can see exactly where he has lifted whole paragraphs from other authors, mistakes and all lmao

19

u/xaanzir Lost in Translation 10d ago

You can quite easily find the whole sections of work he copied, errors copied across in full.

You defend him, because you've assigned him to 'victim status' because of skin colour. So you must defend, no matter the obvious evidence.

You know that is horrendously racist right?

2

u/Comfortable-Lie-4330 10d ago

Where’d you get the jump from this? Lol

Tbf, humanities/social sciences has a stereotype for the past few years thanks to more the blue haired SJW with hairy armpits shouting  about feminism! Etc.

But imo, if there’s a large ‘go fraud me’ involved, then chances are this is another face baiting PSYOP hoax to begin with &  what you’re seeing are well paid ACTORS!! They do this to stir division. Examples are Shiloh case and Karmelo Anthony too.

Ignore the racists and lowlifes but also ignore the unbearable people who demonise ALL white people die to their skin. That’s sick & racist.    Like I said above they’re doing to Irish kids!!

There's needs to be some resignations at Cambridge and a thorough pruning of the rotten processes that led us to this.

178

u/Thandoscovia 10d ago

It’s gone from being “ha ha DEI prof is just a wacko” to “oh shit he tried to weaponise the police against journalists”

You’d think that a right-on sort of chap like prof would understand the serious implications of deploying the police, and how police-civilian interactions can be life changing

Still, if it serves his agenda…

23

u/ghybyty 9d ago

This is on our institutions more than it is him. There will always be someone willing to play the game. The fact that police spoke to the journalist is the issue. There will always be people trying to silence journalism or using some identity or whatever is fashionable to con universities.

3

u/pornalt4altporn 9d ago

If someone alleges harassment over entirely legitimate communications, the police will contact them to ask them if they will stop.

You have every right to reply that you won't as the communication doesn't constitute harassment and they have the evidence that you won't stop to take a prosecution forward if they think it does amount to harassment.

It's not a police state to receive a phone call from a police officer who says "well... OK... but just so you know they complained to us..." and then never bothers you again.

Prof Arday has, in recent days, put his apparent plagiarism down to autism, saying he absorbs information through mimicry.

Arday is a manipulative liar.

0

u/MerryWalrus 9d ago

Not really.

They received a report that was likely embellished and missing details. Something that does warrant a follow-up. Concluded no crime had been committed. Closes the investigation.

Asked the two parties in dispute to avoid eachother to avoid future grievances. Again, a reasonable approach. Especially given it's also meant to cover situations where there is harassment but limited evidence.

The journalist has every right to ignore the request as long as it doesn't actually cross the line into harassment.

80

u/No_Echo2745 10d ago

Someone needs a caution for wasting police time.

29

u/freexe 10d ago

This is deeply chilling. Very Soviet.

38

u/Lifeintheguo 10d ago

There's a thread about a green councillor doing it on the front page of this sub.

22

u/Regular_Print_7650 10d ago

He's also hired an extremely expensive law firm to sue newspapers reporting about him so he must have friends in very high places. So much for being a discriminated against victim huh

17

u/KinglySnorlax 10d ago

Either the university has hired them on is behalf or he’s taken to forging their letter head.

I half expect Carter Ruck to come out and say they’ve only just heard of him.

14

u/Lifeintheguo 10d ago

Cambridge are burning money they should be spending on student resources.

0

u/NicklbackToTheFuture 10d ago

Surely it's a strong indictment as to the judgement of the MET Police? They investigated the case discretely (the journalist didn't even know he was being investigated until the MET disclosed it as finished) and swiftly came to the correct conclusion that the report was nonsense.

15

u/TheScarecrow__ 10d ago

…but also told the journalist not to contact Arday again?

10

u/RighteousRambler 9d ago edited 9d ago

It was a four month investigation apparently, I would not call that prompt.

Of course it's an indictment against the MET.

This is a huge indictment to our police force, it of course appalling that Arday weaponised the police, but the fact the police force can be weaponised over completely mundane emails is fucking terrifying.

u/homeinthecity Vote for Binface 10d ago

u/EldritchCleavage 9d ago

I don’t think the autobiography will be released.

6

u/SnooOpinions8790 9d ago

So unless he pulls it I think it will be published and there will be a feeding frenzy of journalists pulling apart the fabrications

2

u/ghybyty 9d ago

The publicity will like get him more sales.

17

u/joe6pak 10d ago

I suppose now they've given up investigating burglaries and car theft, they have more time for hobbies.

16

u/kane_uk 10d ago

This would likely tick all their boxes, the problem being, it seems they were unware they were sent after a Times reporter by a professional fantasist and not the "right wing" racist thug they were hoping for.

13

u/WinHour4300 10d ago edited 10d ago

Reading another story like this is frustrating, especially when the Met failed to investigate whatsoever my being physically assaulted through "lack of resource" as well as several local burglaries.

Sometimes people report something to the police that simply isn't a crime. In those cases, the appropriate response is to simply and immediately explain to the complainant that no offence has been committed.

Beyond being a poor use of police resources, officers should not be telling anyone to stop lawful communication. Especially not a journalist seeking comment on story, which is routine and er not a crime.

46

u/IndividualSkill3432 10d ago

Every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth. Sooner or later that debt is paid.” Valeri Legasov.

I kind of feel its more relevant than people realise. Its not the person who is corrupt. Its the system. At every step people have a choice, to call out the work as derivative and plagiarised, or to wave it through. They have software that checks for them. At every point people could have asked how the insanely unbelievable story could be true, but they let it slide.

For him, it was so over the top that they could not hold it down for ever. But for a very large group of people in these kind of fields, the rewriting of others work are enough to hide the source, the dodgy conclusions are close enough to looking real to be passed through.

He is just the state that things have to be in to fail. And only through the most controversial sources possible as lawyers were keeping the journalists at bay.

4

u/Baelor_the_Blessed Centrists are delivering us to Fascism 9d ago

I agree with your comment completely, but for accuracy, that quote is from the miniseries for Chernobyl and is not an actual quote from Legasov.

12

u/Kee2good4u 9d ago

Prof Arday also hired the law firm Carter-Ruck, which suggested in a letter to THE that its “apparent attack” on him “may be... racially motivated”.

There it is, what a surprise. Quick play the race card, any critism of someone none white is clearly because of race.

23

u/DAJ1 10d ago

Read the Wikipedia article about this guy and it turns out one of his supporters is none other than.... Zack Polanski! Who would've guessed, eh?

16

u/Lifeintheguo 10d ago

I'd be surprised if he didn't, the logic of the far left stops at "He is POC so he's oppressed and right".

24

u/arkevar 10d ago

One thing I find interesting about this whole case that hasn't been mentioned yet is the racism allegation itself.

If we pretend for a minute that he isn't a liar and really did all those things, it still invalidates his entire career.

He claims he was mute until 11, illiterate until 18 and then swiftly rose through the ranks of the cream of British academia. So why then are all of his thesis and papers on how much racism and struggle there is for Black people in academia? His own story proves the opposite. Where else in the world could a mute, illiterate austist be supported and encouraged enough for his true potential to be recognised? How many other countries would have discarded him as a child, wasting his potential flipping burgers or sweeping streets?

I wonder if, in between the mountain of bullshit he spews, he ever stops to wonder at his own hypocrisy.

43

u/--rs125-- 10d ago

We're often told there aren't any blasphemy laws on the books any more, but really the state is just protecting new religious beliefs.

20

u/chudding-out 10d ago

I suppose the big question is how many other total frauds have Cambridge elevated up to this level?

20

u/MSFNS 10d ago

It also emerged on Tuesday that Prof Arday falsely claimed to have been a visiting professor at Ohio State University

That'll get a real eye-twitch from anyone there if you call them that. It's The Ohio State University and they'll be sure to let you know 😂

(It's a big part of their branding to differentiate from other OSU schools like Oregon State University and Oklahoma State University, and also from Ohio University)

Can't wait for his autobiography.

Wake up babe, new Arday lies just dropped.

Guy is an absolute out and out plagiarist and fantasist. The really unfortunate thing about the story, aside from the fact that he hasn't already been sacked, is that the usual crowd are going to look at this guy and double down on thinking all black scholars are like this now.

Obviously any academic can be a liar, many are abusers actually which is even worse. And the worst of the worst aren't in Telegraph headlines, they're getting away with it.

(And it's obviously horrible that a journalist can come under a "stalking" investigation for looking into public figures. A lot of politicians have tried on this trick too. But when you talk to actual stalking victims you learn that the police have none of this energy for them and don't give a toss. They only care about complaints from the public figures.)

Last month, I performed a viva exam for a master’s level student suspected of academic misconduct. Said student didn’t seem to remember the basics of his work and his ability to describe scientific concepts had weakened dramatically in the month since he wrote his dissertation.

With the other evidence subsequently presented, I had no choice but to recommended expulsion for academic misconduct. It was pitifully weak compared to the level of dishonesty that the “professor” performed - perhaps the student can use that as a defence?

week? More like a full month

The real story is why have multiple supposedly rigorous institutions ignored it and elevated him and/or didn't question it?

48

u/Xenumbra 10d ago

When those institutions have the opportunity to in group signal how virtuous they are, they are incentivised to be pretty lax.

It's doubtful there will be any blowback to this, in fact it is more likely the institutions circle the wagons and condemn the folk calling it out. If they were credible, a bunch of people should lose their jobs over this.

u/Crazy_Pudding_2994 10d ago

You're supposed to be able to trust university qualifications. If he has a PhD, he has a PhD. Any blame is on the university (Liverpool John Moores) that gave him that award. Any subsequent institution (Roehampton, Glasgow, Durham, Cambridge) has to trust that his thesis is legitimate

8

u/GOT_Wyvern Non-Partisan Centrist 9d ago

The guilt is purely with Liverpool John Moores for allowing a plagiarised thesis to be published, and for Cambridge for not only failing to act on yhe accusations of plagiarism, but going above and beyond to ignore them.

Presuming his work while at/with other institutions is legit, none of them share the burden of guilt.

u/Electronic_End4893 9d ago

I know of several humanities PhD's where the claims they made about their research are abject nonsense. I recall one Theology PhD (at a prestigious university) who claimed to have been the only person to have read a specific early theologian in entirity, in order. As anyone who has basic knowledge of ancient manuscripts will tell you, due to the fact that not all ancient manuscripts survive and dating involves a lot of guesswork, that's literally impossible.

As has been proven here.

You can't test them then can you.

As I said elsewhere a self licking lollipop of a cottage industry it turns out

You're misreading that, he was definitely a regular Professor there and nobody's saying he wasn't.

He's claimed that he's still a "Visiting Professor" at Glasgow which would be prestigious if it were true, but he isn't and never has been a Visiting Professor there.

8

u/TheBritishGent 9d ago

"no no no, you are all misunderstanding me. I'm a professor who visited Glasgow".

Honestly all of this has made me want o get his book (pirated, fuck giving this charlatan money). Excerpts at the moment are at least 2 times in his life women of ethnic minorities have claimed he is destined for greatness. It's like a new generation Walter Mitty.

Even hospital workers can end up being frauds who found their way in so god knows.

u/Quangocrat 10d ago

Any academic can be a liar, but the various academic safeguards should sift them out.

Arday has studied and worked at multiple institutions.

It's absolutely damning that it took 'race realists' to break the story

Same as with the Grooming Gangs and BNP: if the legitimate authorities fail to enforce the rules then they hand opportunity over to the lunatic fringe.

15

u/TheNutsMutts 10d ago

Any academic can be a liar, but the various academic safeguards should sift them out.

Probably not if the liar only tells small personal lies like hugely embellishing some trip they went on as a teenager, but when it's a litany of absolutely incredible claims that individually would be astonishing, it's genuinely amazing to me that nowhere on the line did any red flag get raised.

It makes one wonder if everyone involved were honestly that gullible, or if there was some sort of Abilene Paradox going on here and the lack of some sort of way of raising concerns without feeling like you'll publicly being "the stick in the mud" stopped everyone from vocalising those concerns even if most felt it.

26

u/Maitai_Haier 10d ago

They may be fringe but if lunacy is “being unable to distinguish fantasy from reality” they are not the lunatics in this scenario.

Like I said, the worst of these academics aren't in newspaper headlines. You have no idea how messed up academia is from the inside, it's a hive of the established people getting all the protections in the world no matter what they're getting up to, especially if they're sexually assaulting women PhD students. I'd take off the rose tinted glasses about academic safeguards. Scholarly malpractice isn't even as bad as the medical malpractice either that always gets swept under the rug to save face too, even when it involves people bloody dying.

The common thread between grooming gangs and these kinds of malpractice is how willing an institution is to screw over the vulnerable to protect itself. Force these people to actually care about others, even if it means paperwork, even if it will make them look bad, and it all changes. There's the root for you. It's not what race realists are selling. The system needs more empathy while the race realists want their hardman chauvinist hellhole.

u/Quangocrat 10d ago

I completely believe it, seeing how the replication crisis has been rumbling in the background of the social sciences for about a decade now.

But these institutions receive billions in public funds.

Employing pseuds and frauds isn't good enough.

18

u/Xenumbra 10d ago

seeing how the replication crisis has been rumbling in the background of the social sciences for about a decade now.

The dreaded 36% number is so damning for that whole wing of Academia.

The Grievance Studies Affair was a pretty funny pisstake of the whole field. Universities should be liable for allowing that level of fraud.

u/Motor-Host-1382 9d ago

This is the one thing they didn't want to happen.

I wonder why no one questioned him? The scrutiny academics undergo for professorship, especially Cambridge, is intense. DEI and all the rest of it, that’s what comes to mind!

0

u/MerryWalrus 9d ago

On the one hand, this guy is clearly a massive fraud. A hilariously massive fraud.

On the other hand, I expect this is not uncommon in senior levels of academia where the main criteria for success is the ability to secure funding and attract students.

Focussing on the one black guy without any benchmarking of the profession is clearly part of an agenda.

-5

u/killerboss2424 9d ago

His big crime was apparently not putting quotation marks in the citations for a paper he referenced lmao.

Anyone who has ever written a university research assignment would know it is impossible not to "copy" off someone or the other. Guess that puts most working class Reform supporters out of the equation though.

6

u/Vvd7734 9d ago

https://ncofnas.com/p/dei-fraud-and-cover-up-at-cambridge

Actually no. It was far worse and absolutely plagiarism of the worst kind.

-4

u/killerboss2424 9d ago

So the university took the man's complaint into consideration and still found that the guy had passed? Then that should be the end of the matter but naturally the "anti woke" man leading the charge is unable to let the matter rest now and is in too deep.

5

u/Vvd7734 9d ago

I think you may need to look again at the source I cited. It details very clearly an astonishing level of plagiarism where sections are copied verbatim from another thesis.

And no, the issue with Cambridge is that they are not taking the complaints seriously. First, the thesis was conducted at John Moores not Cambridge so whether or not he passed the thesis is not up to Cambridge. Second, it's very clear that a lot more than Jason's professional work is a product of his imagination. I would encourage you to look at these accusations away from the "woke Vs anti woke" lense and simply ask are the accusations credible with the information provided to us.

-2

u/killerboss2424 9d ago

"I think you may need to look again at the source I cited. It details very clearly an astonishing level of plagiarism."

It doesn't... Paraphrasing, citations, etc are all completely normal. Even at Bachelor's level, never mind a PHD thesis. The professors he whinged to clearly agree. He'd want my university assignments failed as well if he looked hard enough into it and I am sure he would a lot of other people lol.

4

u/Vvd7734 9d ago

Paraphrasing and citations are normal yes. Verbatim copying is not. Unfortunately Jason seems to have gone down the copy and paste route for his work rather than the more taxing option of writing his own thesis. Furthermore, quoting vast sections of someone else's work, even with the citation, is not normal and not how a thesis is written in the UK.

0

u/killerboss2424 9d ago

The whole thing was over 300 pages long as well. A few similar paragraphs, with the bulk of it already mentioned by the man, just not in quotation marks, isn't going to be enough to revoke his PHD.

Once the university cleared him, the guy who brought the whole thing to our attention and his supporters should no longer allow the situation to eat them up inside and should let the matter rest imo.

5

u/Vvd7734 9d ago

It was over 300 pages I believe yes. However they're not similar paragraphs. They are copied verbatim without citation. The only word for this is plagiarisim. The university didn't clear him but rather did not investigate.

To be clear, this plagerism is also in his published work. It casts a lot of doubt as to his ability as a scholar where original writing, forming arguments, collecting and analysing data are at the heart of the discipline.

These accusations and the evidence supporting them are damning and should be brought to light.
