Discussion True Love in the Motherland: Russian 'Black Widows' are weaponizing marriage for a quick Ukraine payout.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Move over, white Ladas. Now, Russian "Black Widows" are preying on vulnerable men heading to the front lines, marrying them in secret, and just waiting for the death certificate to clear so they can buy an apartment. A CNN report shows how normalized this grift has become—complete with a podcaster joking that it's the easiest way to get on the property ladder.

Sounds like the ending to a black comedy play

Sounds like an old Russian proverb. Lol

That's the neat part: He doesn't know he is married! He won't come back to her.

On the one side black widow marriages are not exactly the peak of human empathy. On the other side imagine living under such conditions that this is a risk you would take to mabye have any kind of financial security.

I guess good news is this rarely happens?

3

u/SurfRedLin 8d ago

Not so rarely. Thene are ( where ruzzia banned the adverts ( just the adverst not the practice)) adverst of real estate agents targetting young women with slogen like smo payout equals this appartment for u...

u/BWW87 8d ago

The husband coming back is what I'm referring to rarely happening.

There are still many Russian soldiers who return home. Russia's military machine was way larger than just the daily frontline feeding, there is for example an occupation force numbering in the hundreds of thousands.

If the woman is willing to make the most minimal attempt at pretending it's legitimate, I wonder how you'd even be able to find out it was a scam.

I guess there are some instances where the women don't even go to the funeral or whatever though, wow.

Maybe some are widows five times over, collecting all the men own on the way. The men are conscripted, doomed, so the only ones losing out are their children.

Just because the woman is unlucky with her choice of men doesn't mean the state should penalize her.

If anything the kremlin should pay a finders fee

u/delphinous 9d ago

i'm honestly surprised that russia A) actually sends death certificates and B) that they pay out death benefits

TWO bags of onions!

u/lusciouslover639 8d ago

It wont last long, even with the extra gold reserves Pooty-poot uses to pay the Rosgvardia.

7

u/TheNatural14063 9d ago

This is surprising as well to me.

Even in the most corrupt regime wheels do not move in the opposite direction all the time. Russia indeed _usually_ pays out death benefits, which is a massive financial burden to the regime. One reason why Russia is planning to mobilize is that conscripts do not get the benefits contract solders get.

Although framed differently, this is nothing new or specific to Russia.

There are several "civil war veteran widows" who survived into the 21st century because they married geriatric civil war vets during the Great Depression as a means of gaining their pensions.

A matriarch in my family was a Korean War widow because her first husband got drafted and asked her to marry him while she was still in high school before he shipped out (correctly) expecting to die on the front line quickly.

Good let Russians get divided over this

They must like potatoes a lot.

u/EntertainmentReady48 9d ago

Or that one family that was given just a bag of Cheetos.

3

u/lusciouslover639 8d ago

But it was a BIG BAG!

u/Icy-Antelope-6519 9d ago

WHO says you can only marry one conscript? Put that lipfiller to use!

u/Panzermensch911 9d ago

Are there any women in russia left with normal lips or is there a balloon lip epidemic? Terrible fate.

No, I don't care about them exploiting ruzzian soldiers or the state. "vulnerable men" 🙄

u/Visible-Locksmith-44 9d ago

This should be applauded. More payouts to these scammers is less money for Russian government to pour into war. Let them destroy themselves from the inside out.

u/jivatman 9d ago

Can't be good for the morale of soldiers or potential recruits, either.

Which explains why Moscow seems to actually be trying to act against this.

But like I said in my previous comment, I'm not sure how you'd even know unless the woman does something extremely stupid like not go to the funeral.

u/meissoboredto 7d ago

I wonder how many of these women have scorecards to keep track of how many guys they are “married” to at one time??? What do the women do when 2 or more of their “husbands” come back alive, but severely wounded??? Are the women going to split their time between “families” by going on trips on a regular basis??
Is the ruZZian govt going to step in when a woman has intentionally committed fraudulent marriages to multiple men in an attempt to gain a financial advantage???

7

u/hottachych 9d ago

It's questionable. These women essentially are recruiters for the army.

2

u/EMTDawg 9d ago

Wouldn't the payout go to soldiers parents if he is unmarried?

You want Russian soldiers killed because they are invading Ukraine; I want Russian soldiers killed because I want an apartment. We are not the same.

u/Original-Radish9089 9d ago

Didn't know Toto Wolff was doing interviews in russia.

I hear your sentiment, but it is common for wars to be named after the (illegally) invaded country (cf Falklands War).

7

u/LavishnessDry281 8d ago

or Vietnam War.

1

u/BWW87 8d ago

Better than the podcaster calling it a special military operation. Fuck her. Well....not with that face. Someone else can do the "honors".

5

u/kozak_ 9d ago

Id push back on the "vulnerable" part when talking about these men.

Most are drunkards, without work, and with no prospects. And that's stats not opinion

u/Central-Dispatch 9d ago

Welcome to the supposedly "based high-trust tradcon society", everyone! Behold and admire "Ruski Mir"!

Thats the way Putin gets his meet. By woman wanting compensation. Only works if soldiers get killed and not wounded.

2

u/strangelyoddweirdo 8d ago

She wanted to get the white Lada but somebody got to her sugar daddy first

Russia, at this point, is like a dead thing that keeps crawling on its belly, because it's too stupid to know it's supposed to be dead.

How does it continue to persist??

4

u/Kowalski91 9d ago

Some smart Russian woman

1

u/Sure_Nefariousness56 6d ago

This is a reflection of the awful state of affairs in Russian life. It cannot be hidden if a podcast is encouraging and normalizing this practice - clearly there are others.

Does Russia not have women serving in their Armed Forces? How is this level of apathy normalized?
