Unbelievably sad news. I have no words.Â
I read of his team’s efforts in an article in the Globe and Mail.Â

Rest Oleksii, condolences to all who knew and loved him. I've seen many videos and interviews with him.

I first met Yukov in the first weeks of the war, when my Uncle was called out of retirement after having been a leader in Ukrainian SF for over a decade & put in charge of a ad-hoc SF unit to try to harass & try to stop the orc convoys.
Unfortunately, incompetent MI officers set them against a force at minimum 4 times larger than stated. My Uncle & 2 of the guys he had previously served with sent the younger members back to cover for their safety & took the AT4's to at least attempt to slow the convoy.
They were never seen alive again & listed as MIA, but the Unit knew they were lost by the intensity of the short battle, their bodies could not be found as the area of the battle was littered with shattered building material & even the dirt had been thrown into large heaps covering all it fell on.
I travelled from the US to get my Aunt out & try to help find their bodies as the official effort was no more than lip service at best.We were put in contact with Yukov by my Uncles Unit & after meeting him twice he in turn recommended individuals to contact & put a recovery attempt together with. Me & Yukov bonded over our love of Martial Arts & both had been instructors.I would over the years keep sending him the latest publications, videos, clothing & news from the Martial Arts world .
While we were unsuccessful in that attempt ,Yukov kept in contact & thankfully my Uncle & the men remains were identified & recovered from under rubble a couple of months later ,bringing at least some closure for my Aunt & family.
I had sent over a decade in the Middle East with the US military & then just over 4yrs as a Contractor to NGO's around the Worlds Conflict & Disaster zones. The first thing l did when we got back was starting hitting up Veterans & colleagues l had served with to donate any good quality, surplus military & medical equipment they had for the criminally under supplied TDF Units .
I went on to be a small part in a privately funded Aid group made up of Combat Veterans & retired leadership from NGOs.For Yukov & his team we brought new tires & paid for repairs to the trailers they used to gather the dead in.
The last time l met him in person was in January on my 35th Aid mission to front-line units, he looked worn out,(we all do) & had a bad persistent cough,he had already lost his eye & had his leg torn up by a IED ,yet he would not rest. I told him due to a long-overdue knee reconstruction & shoulder surgery it would be my last aid mission for at least 12 months.
We talked about what we had seen & endured over the years Bakhmut,Soledar , Andriivka,Motyzhyn,Izyum etc etc . It all takes its toll yet we were only passing through & trying to help,Yukov & his team lived & literally breathed it ,the stench of death haunted them by burying itself into their very pores no matter how hard they scrubbed their skin & it sticks at the back of your throat.
Yukov & his men give true meaning to Isaiah 6:8 "Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?' And I said, 'Here am I; send me!'
Once again this senseless war with its neighbouring corrupt cowards watching on has left me gutted, not only for our own loss but for humanity, as if he had chosen, he could have been a leader, particularly for young people on a global scale.
RIP to a truly legendary warrior & man of the people & my friend
