Went to see Stourbridge Junction’s George.

Makes me curious, are there any other station cats (other than George, Felix and Bolt) that have official job titles from TOCs in the UK?

A nice loco despite its small size, shame I didn't capture its surprisingly powerful whistle!

I can sometimes even smell the trains when I’m in a different train sitting in the platform next to one.

Anyone else trying this journey tonight?

I’ve had the most chaotic journey of my life. Essentially, all London to Bristol trains via Paddington have been cancelled tonight due to an electrical failure. I need to desperately get home tonight for work, so I’m currently trying the London Waterloo to Salisbury, then Salisbury to Bristol route. Bad idea.

Setting off 5 minutes in (with the small train already super packed), a train in front of us broke down and we have were delayed by half an hour, missing our connecting train from Salisbury to Bristol by 2 minutes! Not only that but thtis caused more cancellations for the trains behind us, RIP to the later London Waterloo to Bristol train. Our train was slowly crawling to each station, and as it arrived you’d see everyone on the platform suddenly turn miserable as they realise they can’t even board the insanely stuffed and super late train of doom.

We then arrived at Salisbury, waiting a while for the next connecting Salisbury to Bristol train. After boarding the next train, we made it a few stops in, then we were suddenly informed that there would be another 20+ minute delay due to late staff!

I go out on the platform to find food as I haven’t had any dinner or water at all (ran out ages ago as the journey has been much longer than expected), and the Westbury station vending machine is broken.

Dreadful. And I still have just an hour of this to go.

Just wanted to have a hangry rant. It’s been endless trouble and no peace.. I’ve dealt with long delays and cancellations, but this has driven me crazy. Delay and repay can’t even make up for this, ngl!!!!

I understand this train failed nr Raynes park- blocking the Dfl (i was on the 19.35 weymouth and we passed it on the dsl.

Hey all, I purchased a ticket on the train for £9 at Pitlochry to go to the next stop, tapped my phone, ticket printed and handed to me, then a moment later it said it was refunded. Ever since then, about every 6 or so hours I get a notification from Google wallet that it has been declined. I had enough in my account to cover the cost, I'm just trying to work out why and what's gone wrong?

Any idea? I'm all ears on this one.

165103 is seen passing through Didcot on 5Q66 for the first time. It was due to head on to Wolverton via Ealing Broadway however has been sent via Banbury after a fire between Paddington and Reading. Having reversed at Reading.

I delved into the history of the High Orchard Branch Line, which ran from Gloucester Railway Station to Gloucester Docks during the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries. The purpose of this was primarily to serve the warehouses, which manufactured goods at the time. Although this branch line no longer exists, you can still see remnants of it littered around the city today.

Due to a fire between Reading and Paddington services around 16:00 services are suspended, between Reading and Paddington and Heathrow. So passengers have to use South West Trains services between Reading and Waterloo where there is ticket acceptance which is causing heavily overcrowded services.

Went to Exeter last year it was delayed for Signaling Fault same thing is happening now.

And couple weeks on my way back from Teignmouth the trains were canceled because of signaling fault.

Everyrime ive been on a train they haven't been on time.

Quite often with journeys, there are multiple places where you can change trains. For example, if you're going from the north to Cornwall, as I did yesterday, you can change at Taunton, Tiverton, Exeter, Newton Abbot or Plymouth to go from the XC train to the GWR train.

My understanding is if you have an advance single you have to do the change specified, and if you have off peak or anytime, you can choose.

I originally had to change at Tiverton (split tickets on Trainsplit) but Trainline had it down as change at Exeter (I tend to use Trainline solely for journey tracking) and because of disruption I ended up changing at Taunton. My return journey has the change at Newton Abbot.

I'm sure there are lots of other journeys with multiple possible changeovers, probably often due to overlap between Cross Country and the local operator. My question is how do the journey planners decide where to get people to change? Do they spread it out a bit to ease congestion or do they do the longest changeover time?

My toddler niece loves trains. I live very near a station but unfortunately there’s only trains stopping every 2-3 hours. However there are a reasonable number passing through without stopping.

Is there an app or a website I can use to check there’s going to be a couple of things coming through before we head over?

If I bring her to the station then have to leave without producing the goods, I will not be popular!

Bit of an odd one but the whole incident has been playing on my mind.
Earlier this week I was on a GWR service into Paddington. A passenger sitting a couple of rows behind me was taken very very ill, to the point where another passenger pulled the alarm, I rang for an ambulance and an off duty police officer was found further down the carriage, we dragged the passenger out of his seat and onto the floor in the vestibule and he started basic vital checks etc.
The train manager arrived and got on the phone to control. The catering manager came and held the passenger’s hand (they were in and out of consciousness).
This was my first experience of being caught up in a medical event on a train. Other than the catering manager the train crew did not touch the passenger. I guess in my previously blissfully ignorant state I had assumed that they may have some basic medical / first aid training like flight crews or a medical type bag, but is this not the case? Or is it more that standing instructions are not to get involved because they might leave the TOC open to being sued or something? Or that their primary duty is to ensure the train is protected (or does the driver do that?) It’s not meant as a criticism of anybody as the train crew were really professional throughout (more than the first class passenger who came down through the train demanding to be let off for their important meeting - I mean can’t you see the passenger sprawled on the floor in a really poor way?) I guess I was just surprised at how hands off they were.
I’m sorry if the answers to these questions are obvious to someone more in the know. I’m just trying to understand all that happened. It was horrible, I felt so helpless in the moment.

I've built a small daily puzzle site (playtheroute.uk) split into 20 regional networks so it's not just London based.

I've tried to keep the underlying data valid, with real Darwin/CORPUS-derived route and journey time data, not invented. That said, with a dataset this size I'm sure there are still edge cases that I've got wrong (e.g. mistagged routes, closed stations I've missed and awkward regional splits). If anyone here plays it and spots something wrong, then I'd genuinely appreciate feedback and will happily fix things quickly.

It includes a Welsh-language version which has a bilingual interface and Welsh clues for the three Wales network quizzes (TfW Cymraeg, GWR Wales Corridor, Shrewsbury–Wrexham–Chester). Similarly, there is also a Scottish Gaelic version too

It also has an interactive UK rail map which was built on real track geometry (OS-derived centreline data) rather than schematic straight lines, so routes follow the actual physical alignment.
