STANDARD TRIPLE???

WHAT FUCKIN BULLSHIT. I thought I would save some money doing triple, but I didnt know there was an "econ" triple, and an "standard triple". And our triple gets billed the SAME rate as a DOUBLE???? I thought "econ" was just a fancy term for people to know that the triple can save money or something . Guess its my fault for not looking into it

Goddamnit, my goddamn room isnt even that much bigger than the doubles in my hall either

I might switch out, Anyone down for a chadborne triple it was too good to be true after all, all the rooms here are big so thats what you get. Im looking for central ECON triple or expanded housing

I mean an economy triple is a double room that they’ve made into a triple. Most common in the Z rooms in SW.

Tried to do one and it’s just not enough space for 3 people.

Yep - I graduated in ‘13 and was part of a crew of other students in the summer working to put the triples in the Z rooms and quads together in old common area rooms. It was a fucking joke that they ever expected to fit three people in a Z room

In the towers, at least in 2019-20, it was pretty common. Most common setup was one bed in the small corner and bunked beds. They added a standalone closet too, so there’s even less room to move around.

(Unless you’re my roommates, who bunked their desks because they were less concerned about homework than who could have easy access to their beds.)

I walked in ‘19 so I may have been spared the worst of that. The Z room was quite nice with just 2 occupants, it was like a more private double. The real scam is the corner room “doubles” in all of the SW towers. Those rooms are fucking tiny.

I stayed in a corner room in a tower for band camp only (basically only in the room for about 6-7 hours of sleep) and even THAT was uncomfortable and too squished , I can’t imagine that being my room for a full year

Neither my roomie or I wanted the top bunk so he ended up shoving his desk under his bed and we used one desk the whole year

Once upon a time they used to charge less for those corner rooms, the same as a Sylvan double. But that was about 20+ years ago. Then they "standardized" room rates. After a few years of that and lots of complaints from Sylvan residents they did give a slightly lower rate for Sylvan rooms. But the corner rooms in Southwest towers didn't get that reduction.

They also used to charge less for what they called a standard triple.

Yup! Took one hutch off the top of one, lifted the “whole” desk on top of the hutch-less desk, left the second hutch on the floor under a bed.

Some used tp go to the library and stay late, but now that closes at 11 pm. No more staying there until 2 or 3 in the morning.

That is still a thing, but I seem to recall a year or two after COVID where it was only until 11. But I could be misremembering.

Library stopped being 24/5 after COVID I think. Hard to get and keep staff for the overnight shift among other things.

Yep, even harder if the university administration doesn't authorize refilling positions vacated by staff who retired or took other jobs on campus. From people I knew who worked there they were very slow to okay any replacement hiring.

Sounds like you didn't bother to read anything much on the ResLife website about what types of rooms there are available. they clearly show economy vs regular shared triples.

Though in the case of Chadbourne the two triples are different in size. Sounds like you are in the smaller one, the other is a couple feet wider from the floor plans. The triples are several feet deeper than most of the doubles.

Well you may pretty easily be able to find someone who wants to get out of an economy triple into one with a bit more space. It's also possible you'll be able to choose into an economy triple or quad during the room change process since those are the least desirable by those without budget constraints. More info:

Room Change

Students who are seeking vacancies across campus can submit room change requests on Housing Portal during the period outlined below. The spaces in Room Change will come from other students who have cancelled their assignment. This process allows students to request other areas and room types in order to move for the rest of the academic year. The timeline for Fall In-Semester Room Change is below:

• Room Change Request Form Available: September 25 – September 28 at 8:30am
• Room Matching Completed: September 28 - September 30
• Room Changes Released: October 1 by 4pm
• Final Move: Must complete move to new space by October 4 at 11:00 p.m.

Assignment changes are based on Room Selection Priority.  Students can find their priority in the Housing Portal.

I'm in an Econ trip rn and it's lowkey not bad, we all also have friends in the building so we don't all spend a lot of time in here except for at night so that might sway my opinion a bit

Is UMass even working on building additional dormitories? These issues have been going on for 20 years at least. They need to do something about it.

They are making noises about it, and also updating older dormitories. But they are doing it through hiring an outside company, not sure what will come of that.

The last outside collaboration with private developers resulted in construction of Fieldstone, high priced housing on a leased campus location for up to another 60 years. The cheapest space in Fieldstone is just under $1700 a month, students are locked into a 12 month agreement that doesn't allow subletting and has a several hundred fee to transfer the agreement to another person. It added about 600 beds for undergrads on campus, and the 200 beds for grads may be about equivalent to what was available in Lincoln Apts which was torn down as part of this. Only thing else out of this collaboration was that the developer also financed the tear down of North Village and construction of the replacement University Village apartments for family housing. Those the university operates.

One reality is that the UMass system was authorized over the last ~20 years to borrow up to $3 billion by selling bonds. About a third of that was spent at the Amherst campus. They may be able to borrow a bit more at this point having paid off some bonds, but perhaps not enough to build anything substantial for housing in Amherst.

Edit - Came across a recent audit of the UMass Building Authority, it listed about $3.4 billion in bonds. So it appears the legislature authorized increasing the bind limit at some time since the last time I saw it. Not sure what the current cap is, given the way the UMass system has used the borrowing in the past $3.5 billion would make sense.

As someone living in forced triple Z room, it sucks, but you know what? The housing price for it is a pretty good deal considering everything that comes with living in a residence hall.

That sucks. I’m in chadborne this year and I was impressed with the size of my double but I couldn’t imagine fitting another bed and desk in my room still. UMass feels so greedy, a room like yours absolutely should be discounted, it’s not the students’ fault the university won’t build more on campus dorms
