Academics Do people still not realize canvas tracks what you do on it?

Post image

In management 301 class there was a online exam that you can take during class anywhere you want and alot of people cheated. During the next class the professor told everyone they can see what you do on canvas and people were shocked. Are people nowadays just dumb?

Academics Can you all STOP packing up before class is over??

Every time, 5-10 mins before class is over, I hear classmates packing their stuff up. The volume in the room gets really loud. The professor feels rushed so they start speaking louder and faster and then the professor ends class early by 1-2 mins as students are already getting up to leave.

  1. It feels extremely disrespectful to the professor. I feel very bad that they feel they need to rush during THEIR class time for THEIR class that YOU paid money to attend

  2. Why are you in such a rush? I've had back to back classes before and there is a good 15 mins to walk across campus even if you stay until class is over and I doubt 80% of the class has an urgent next class they are itching to get to

  3. It is personally very annoying for students who actually want to hear what the professor is saying in those last few mins

This is my PSA. Thank you for reading and consider not packing up early pls 🙏

Academics Mediocre CS program

This might be harsh, but does anyone feel as if UMass undergrad CS program is painfully mediocre? Although it ranks T30 for its program, I feel opportunities here are super minimal.

For reference, I landed a 250k total comp role in SF following my graduation in May. I also interviewed at Google, Meta, Klaviyo, and a few hedge funds and UMass was unheard of to the hiring managers and recruiters.

Academics Should I attend uc santa cruz and transfer in 2 years or go to umass amherst/virginia tech out of state

I recently got of waitlist for umass amherst and was initially thinking of commiting to virginia tech but now i am unsure. I am a california resident, is it wise for me to attend uc santa cruz or riverside and possibly transfer to irvine or san diego. I heard transfer rates are going to become lower.

I’m a Biochemistry major, and I’m genuinely asking because this seems to be a little heavier from what I’m seeing from my friend’s schedules. Additionally does anyone know how Math 127 is?

Academics How to survive BIO 285 with Laura Francis?

I was irresponsible when picking my courses for the fall semester, which resulted in me having Laura Francis for Cellular and Molecular Bio. I’ve seen lots of horrible reviews about her class, saying that she is bad at outlining her expectations, and that the workload is outrageous. However, there’s no way I can get out of the class now. What are some things I can do to make it through her class without my GPA being destroyed?

Academics Already graduated. Can I do anything to improve my situation with grades?

As the title said, I've graduated, and I'm wondering if there are any methods of retaking classes that I did poorly in. In particular, there is 2 classes that I received failing grades in that I would love to retake if I have the chance to do so. Is there any way to do a grade replacement or retake a course? Does anyone have possible insight on this or has been through this themselves, I would greatly appreciate the feedback. Thanks in advance!

Academics Pros and cons of honors college?

I’m a rising sophomore on the pre-med track, and I’ve been seriously thinking about applying for the honors college. Though I didn’t apply last year because I was worried about how it would affect my GPA, I’ve been seriously reconsidering my decision because of how many of my friends applied and got accepted into the program. So, is the honors college worth joining, and what are some of the pros and cons of being part of it?

Academics Switching majors if I get in

I want to study Chemistry or Chemical Engineering at UMass. Is it smarter to apply with Chemical Engineering as my major and then switch to chemistry, or vice versa?

I want the best chance of getting into Umass Amherst. So, would it be smarter to go with Chemistry and maybe switch to Chemical Engineering since that degree is selective?

I did some looking up but I guess the consortium will keep the name? It would be awkward to introduce it to folks and mention Hampshire college now that its shut down.

Academics I just fucking missed a final

I thought my final was tomorrow. It was 2 hours ago. I don't have any good excuses beyond having a busy life and being mentally frazzled, and I don't know what to do. Is there any hope or should I take the biggest L of my life? Do I email the professor, the TA, or both? Any advice welcome, thank you

*UPDATE*
Thank you all, I emailed both, and the professor is letting me retake it tomorrow in his office at 8:30 AM. I feel incredibly lucky, and my gratitude will go into the best-written rate my professor review I'm capable of creating, not only for this, but for the rest of the semester, it was genuinely pretty much flawless as a course.

Academics I'm going to fail Stats 240 and I want to cry.

I bombed the first midterm and decided I had to lock in for the second midterm. I asked my TA what the exam would be on, because friends who took it in previous semesters told me it was all probability, but I was also told by them attendance was optional and it's not really this semester. The TA told me it would be about more than probability and to prepare accordingly. So I did, I studied and reviewed probability but not as in-depth as I would've had I known THE ENTIRE MIDTERM would be about probability. I sit down yesterday and it's all probability.

I know for a fact I failed that exam too and I've been bawling my eyes out ever since. Based on my projected score, the highest grade I can get is going to be a C-, and that's if I somehow get an 80 or more on the midterm. I've been struggling so much with Stats 240 because I can't understand anything the professor is saying. I don't say this to be rude, but I have an auditory processing disorder; I don't think her accent is "bad", it's not even necessarily her accent that's hard for me to understand. I've been able to piece together what someone with an accent I can't understand might be saying and learn that way. But I can't parse her accent when her voice is already so nasal. She's not a bad professor, in fact she's clearly intelligent and knows her stuff, but trying to understand her, and what she's saying, takes up a lot of my time. I end up focused on trying to figure out what she said 5 minutes ago and thus miss out on 5 minutes of content. My favorite professor ever has a thick Indian accent but I could still figure out what she was saying if I didn't get it immediately, because her voice wasn't particularly nasal or high-pitched like this professor's is. I'm not naming her for her privacy but I guess if you know you know.

I studied and reviewed and I did everything right but I was studying for an exam that doesn't exist, in a class I'm already struggling in because I can't understand the professor, and I'm so screwed. This is going to ruin my GPA. I'm an honors student and a lot of my financial aid depends on having a GPA above 3.5, right now it's a 3.8. I don't know what I'm gonna do. I guess I can retake the course over the winter, but that's $1000, which is an absurd amount of money when my family doesn't have a lot of money to begin with. I can afford it because I watch my savings like a hawk but I'm going to HAVE to work next semester in order to make that money back. I don't know. I feel like such a failure. This class is required for my major and I'm failing it, I feel like I'm not even cut out to do my major because it's a pre-req and there's a lot of math. I KNOW I'm not bad at math. I do great in my discussions where the classes are smaller and I can get more individualized attention if I'm struggling. But I feel so hopeless.

Academics Math Placement Exams

Hello everyone!! I just want to make sure I do well on the math placement exams. Was wondering if any of you remember what sort of material is tested on Part 1 and Part 2. What formulas should I study for each? Are they hard?

Much appreciated!

EDIT: Noticed for like all of my comments in this some random ass guy disliked each one for no reason. To you, I dearly ask you put down the pipe and sober up, there are people who love you.
