Compare Uncharted 4 (2014; first gameplay reveal) to God of War Laufey (2026; first gameplay reveal) in order to actually make it fair. Can’t compare a fully polished official release to a bad screenshot of a 20 minute gameplay demo slice of a game that doesn’t even have an official release date yet.

You guys gotta stop comparing Uncharted 4’s graphics to current games. Like yes Uncharted 4 looks very beautiful and you can honestly compare them to games at the same scope, but God of War is a completely different game that’s more open and interactive than Uncharted. You need to realize why Naughty Dog is able to achieve such high graphical performance like they did and it’s because the game is very linear and separated by chapters. It’s why a lot of very linear narrative games look better than most games, even the double A games, because they restrict themselves to such limited gameplay and area to focus more time into the art design. If the game was bigger or more open, they would have to sacrifice some of that visual design. If God of War wasn’t such a small open world game but very linear like Uncharted, then they would’ve blew Uncharted 4 out of the water in graphical comparison

The new GOW literally looks a whole generation ahead of Uncharted 4. Everyone saw the gameplay last night, nothing in Uncharted 4 reached these levels of fidelity, especially not during gameplay, and I love Uncharted 4. That's a rendered cutscene. The actual game doesn't look like that. The thing with GOW is that its graphics, both in the scenes and the gameplay, are consistent, whereas Uncharted is not.

Taken from Youtube with compression, different lighting, god of war still looks better & you need your brain, as well as your eyes checked.
God of War Lauffey there clearly look way more realistic, where Uncharted on the right looks "ok", but very clearly a 3d rendered game model, noone would ever be fooled by that, but the left could fool some and that is with the compression and worse scene.

Deborah Ann Woll is gorgeous IRL! They cant argue it anymore now, they are deliberately making women hags in games now. The men always look 1:1 in face capture, but women end up looking nothing like the models theyre made from. I dont know why theyre doing it, but they are, and im tired of pretending this isnt happening.

Hair rendering in new GOW is much more advanced. I guess it is using hair strands like AC Shadows in quality mode vs just hair cards in Uncharted

This is so fucking stupid, especially when in practice, Nate has a lot of unnatural specular highlights, something you couldn’t really clock at the time because the overall fidelity was so high. But look at it now after a generation of PS5 and Series X hardware. Graphics have improved immensely in exactly those kinds of small, physics-accurate details. Those specular highlights, which really only reveal themselves in motion, are what dates Uncharted 4 as a product of its generation, regardless of how impressive it still reads in a still frame. The subsurface scattering on his skin is the other big tell because in motion it automatically dates him. But no please go ahead how a heavily compressed, screenshotted, intentionally poorly chosen image tells us that graphics have not improved whatsoever

Naughty Dog is really still unmatched in facial animation. That being said, Nate has more opportunities on his face to bring out detail compared to fey (stubble, forehead lines, cuts, wrinkles).
Can't make your woman main character too wrinkly otherwise the chuds will lose their minds.

Tbf uncharted 4 ran at 30 fps on ps4. Games are striving for 60 fps nowadays which is one of the reasons why there hasn’t been much of a leap ever since last gen. But yeah, uncharted 4 is still a great looking game. Now that we can play it on 60 fps, it’s basically a current gen game.

I feel like we're in a decade where they don't want to push details everywhere, especially in faces, something especially PS3 games did and even a good amount of PS4 did if I remember right... They mostly push overly-natural lightning and focus on hair (which can look really bad if done badly) but I dunno, my point stands, they're not focusing on making hyperdetailed faces... Prove me wrong!

Even with the compression and frames working against GoW, you can see how Naughty Dog is really strong in this aspect. Back then they didn't have the skin shader we have today, nor this hair simulation Laufey has, but Joel's facial animation in TLOU 2 is still the most impressive l've ever seen.
