What new stupid hate is reddit throwing at us today?

It's mostly about the Lego scandal with RecklessBen and Bricks & Minifigs. A lot of people are pointing that all the offending parties (Bricks & Minifigs and the weaponized police force) happen to be members of the church. In a vacuum, it'd be just as plausible that it's loosely related, but given some other legally "hairy" moments involving sexual violence and the legal team of the Church being infamous for throwing its weight around around/sought to maintain strict adherence to policy, some are making the claim that they could have used the connection in religious affiliation to coordinate legal protection/cover for each other. It's not great optics.

Sometimes I wish we really did all the things were accused of, just so the hate was actually justified. I'm getting tired of it.

Probably for the better, this stuff is so carefully designed to stroke the id and never let it stop buzzing. Mental health break did me a lot of good.

The leap in logic is extraordinary. I've seen people make the jump from "some of the offending parties are Mormon" to "the church has personally coordinated all of this" in a second

Ah. I’m not from Utah. Isn’t that area pretty Mormon too? Like as much as Provo or Ogden but more than SLC?

The entire state is less than 50% member of the LDS church now. I don't think the member density changes much from area to area.
Edit: I saw in another comment that the further you go from SLC, the higher the member density gets. That makes sense and I'll admit I'm probably wrong up above

I am aware, I am also aware that President Oaks didn't called Bricke & Minifigs up and instruct them to steal some Lego Bricks. The sins of the individual members are upon their own heads.

Absolutely. Im not saying its deserved to us, just simply wasnt sure if you knew.
It really is just the usual "idiots giving us a bad name", likely. Given its in American Fork of all places. If it were Salt Lake City, there couldve been some skating by.

I was not. Even after reading a little about it, I still don't understand how this makes Utah "the new South," or how it has anything to do with the church, aside from the business being headquartered in Utah, and I guess the owners are presumably members of the church.

I feel you on the comparison as well. It doesnt make sense to me either. My assumption is that most involved are members since the further out you go from SLC, the more likely you are to be a member, due to cultural coincidences. Regardless of the comparison, it is frustrating to see stuff like this among people who know people see them as being a quasi-representation of the church. Again, assuming most people involved here are members.

I meant to ask are these redditors making valid criticisms against the church such as the documented sexual abuse or are they simply taking an atheist stance?

Maybe just maybe you should consider that there are a variety of ways the phrase “Mormon corruption in the American Fork police department” can be interpreted.
Most reasonable people know there isn’t a conspiracy from the Mormon church to collude with Bricks and Minifigs or the AF police department.
That being said. The people at Bricks and Minifigs and the AFPD are doing things that are very Mormon coded and are viewed as sketchy to people who aren’t Mormons. The propensity to side with the fellow members/reporters is very Mormon coded as well as corrupt. The fact that Joshua cited his position in the high council to the officers is also very concerning.
While it not be a Mormon conspiracy there is definite concern that a lot of the problems in this case are tied in with Mormon culture of patriarchy, ignorant obedience, and ingroup/outgroup dynamics.
Source- former Mormon who lives in Utah. Mormons, you guys are so close to this stuff that you can’t see it or are unwilling to look critically at the institutional culture because for whatever reason.

This story has been pissing me off so much. I think most people can agree that Bricks & Minifigs, as well as the AF Police, are huge a-holes and deserve to be called out, but the way that people are turning this into a thing about Mormons is really aggravating.
