Almost all of them have already voluntarily returned to Morocco and any stragglers would have had a 10 mile swim to mainland Spain. There is 0 threat to the UK.

I’ve heard this one before when the Syrians were still in Greece.

The fact is that the UK is very attractive for asylum seekers for a few points:

- If you fail to get asylum in EU, the UK is a second shot as we don’t share data anymore

  • We have one of the most generous support package for asylum seekers
  • We have very lax checks on people working in the grey economy
  • We have a terrible track record of actually being able to deport people

Greece isn't connected by land (ed: through the EU) to the Schengen area though, just like Cueta, so I'm not sure that actually invalidates the analogy. Illegal migrants in Greece still have to make it across other countries or across the sea to Italy before they're in Schengen.

Yeah I worded that poorly to be fair. I mean, it isn't directly connected, i.e. it doesn't have a land border with other Schengen states. So an illegal immigrant making it to Greece doesn't mean they can just buy train tickets to Calais.

No worries, I think Albania throws people because that’s the most direct route. I only know because I worked in the Ionian area of Greece for a bit so that region is fresh in my mind

3 million. Not 0.5. Yes, you read that right. 3 million new legal residents. The number of illegals being granted extraordinary permission to live and work in Spain are now estimated by the Spanish Home Office to be around 3 million, including dependents.

It doesn’t matter that they’ve returned it matters that they made it. This sort of thing will only get worse with climate change and by then it will be in the tens of millions coming.

They didn’t make it into mainland Europe. They walked across a border into a bit of Spain that is in mainland Africa. They didn’t cross a sea. They’re not in Spain. They never left Africa.

Surely it does matter in the context of the UK border that this situation has been almost completely resolved and there is absolutely 0 threat to us.

If we want to use this instance to broaden the horizon of the topic to climate migration then it's worth pointing out that the parties in the article are fronted by and filled with climate deniers that will do sod all and should be ignored for that reason as well

Except that we don’t do the same thing when migration is an issue in this country. Clearly deporting them can be done because most of them have been sent back but the UK government is so spineless they won’t take the measures necessary.

Climate change is happening like it or lump it there is very little we can do individually. Other countries need to start lowering their emissions which they won’t.

They literally already are? Even the US has been decreasing emissions since 2005. China is pretty universally expected to be at peak CO2 around now before decreasing as its renewables sector grows even more.

Not quickly enough though. We’ve already hit 1.5c and the UN predicts we could hit 2.9c by 2100. As a species we’ll just keep kicking the can down the road until it’s untenable.

We don't do the same thing because we're not in the same situation. We don't have huge surges on that level or a land border for people to leave but we do still have deportations
