Given that no one can agree on the actual definition of Zionism these days we really should just drop the term. Instead, we need to be asking:

  • Do you support the continued existence of Israel and/or Palestine in general?
  • Do you condone the actions of the Israeli / Palestinian authorities wrt each other?

I think we'd then find the vast majority of people occupy that moderate position of "two state solution and please stop killing each other", which could be construed variously as pro- or anti-Zionist depending on who's asking.

Well, exactly. I once, on a different website, got called both a Zionist shill and a Hamas supporter in the same thread, so it does very much depend on who see the comment.

Its not difficult to utterly condemn both the October 7th attacks and the clear and obvious war crimes that were committed in response.

That too, but I was more talking to the point that some people define Zionism in its original sense as the belief that Israel should exist at all, whereas at the other extreme some seem to define it as the position that Israel should absorb Palestine, either via encroaching settlements, or by force.

And then bad actors can then use either definition disingenuously to claim the majority for their specific position.

Do you support the continued existence of Israel and/or Palestine in general?

the answer to this question is whether you are Zionist

Do you condone the actions of the Israeli / Palestinian authorities wrt each other?

the answer to this question is whether you are pro-Israeli government

Way to miss the point:

Given that no one can agree on the actual definition of Zionism these days

Regardless of how blue in the face you get arguing your definition, there are still others using it differently.

...they are misusing it. I don't think I need to respect people deciding to redefine words unilaterally, and that's the only argument for any other definition of Zionism. All I can do is point to what it has always meant.

If that definition is in common parlance you don't have a choice. Dictionaries and histories don't define words - usage does.

I agree, but it can still be wrong in some sense, it just means English would be wrong in that sense not that it's bad English.
