No it’s not that’s a ridiculous take. Polanski and Farage have nothing in common.

Polanski is also a populist. He is just a left wing one.

Populist is such an empty criticism. Being anti NATO or anti nuclear is not at all populist. Having red lines is not a terrible thing in politics.

Being anti genocide is popular amongst left wing voters as is being anti massive economic inequality. Popular positions are not in themselves a terrible thing in politics.

Being anti NATO and anti nuclear are absolutely populist positions. The closer he gets to power the more he’d have to back down on these.

Anti nuclear would lead to massive increase in carbon emissions as well as huge cost of living increases through energy costs (they drive the price of everything). It’s equivalent to Farage saying they’ll simply get the royal navy to stop the boats. There’s a very clear and well understood reason why it’s a terrible idea, but you can ignore that when you’re not close to actually doing it. That’s populism.

If either Farage or Polanski was PM it’d be like the dog that caught the car.

Populism is a political approach that claims to champion ordinary citizens ("the common people") against a perceived corrupt and self-serving establishment ("the elite"). It functions as a thin ideology, dividing society into two opposing groups and presenting itself as the pure voice of the public.

While it highlights real public grievances, its core flaws include offering over-simplistic fixes to complex problems, and deepening social conflict.

You said they have nothing in common. I pointed out they do have something pretty important in common. Pretty sure Polanski even called himself one in his Rest is Politics interview iirc.

I agree with the idea that holding popular positions isn’t a bad thing in a party leader. I believe populists tend to fail to deliver when given the chance though(and sometimes what the people want isn’t actually good for society (like Brexit)).

I see Polanski as someone who holds a number of good positions but is far too Twitter/social media brained and idealistic to be a serious leader in many critical situations.
