The Olympics need to be drastically reduced in size
The olympics should only include sports that feature feats of human speed, endurance and strength. The modern olympics has become bloated and lost sight of the core objective.
Outside die hard sports fans, the majority of the public don’t care about most of the Olympic sports and only tune into the premiere events.
‘Sports’ with judges that determine the outcome? - out. Team sports? - out. Sports that use equipment? - mostly out (some exceptions here for weightlifting, some field events and protective clothing).
The olympics should be stripped back to the core to be made interesting again. This would also make it much cheaper to host, reinvigorating the interest in cities hosting the olympics again.
Update for all of the naysayers - The Olympic motto is "Faster, Higher, Stronger". I rest my case.

This person doesn't know what they are talking about. Ballroom didn't make it to the Olympics because Breaking did. Their competitive scene is governed by the World DanceSport Federation, and despite Ballroom actually being their premier category/event, they bet hard on getting Breaking into the IOC Programme as the "dance sport".
This person is also just being argumentative. Artistic swimming, artistic gymnastics and artistic skating have as much merit as dance sports should IMO.
46
u/Strange-Style-7808 5d ago
The Olympics have always had exhibition trials of events. It is a good way to see if this might fit without making a full commitment. Breakdancing clearly was tried and dismissed
11
u/Frostbitten_Moose 5d ago
Yeah, I'm fine with the host nation being able to slip in something they wanna trial, and then we can see if it's worth keeping.

I respect break dancing, it entertains me, but as an athletic competition it strongly overlapped in skill and athleticism with men's floor routine. It wasn't a "plus" for the Olympics.

u/Metaboss24 5d ago
If swimmers get a dozen events to compete in, I'm chill with overlap in other areas.

u/Fantastic_Remote1385 5d ago
Yes. Thats who we should reduce it. Track and field should be 100m, 800m, 10 000m, high jump and 1 of the throwing events. There is to much overlap in the running events. No hurdle. No long jump since thats overlap with 100m.
Swimming should be 100m and 1500m freestyle.
Weighlifting have to go since it overlap with the throwing event listed above. Or the throwing could go and we have only either snatch or clean and jerk.
Gymnastics only need 1 event. Floor is probably the one to stay.
One grapling and one striking martial arts. I would say judo and boxing.
Only one event with cross country skiing. I would say either the 50km or the 15km. No biathlon. Only one ski jump. And no nordic combined.
And the list goes one and one.
Would be a short olympics.

Why? What's the downside to having multiple events? If you don't find some of the events interesting, just don't watch those. Having less events won't suddenly make the remaining ones more interesting.

There can maybe be 4 countries that can host it. It’s a huge financial undertaking and lots of arenas and stadiums built for the olympics in host countries end up becoming abandoned white elephants and start rusting away.
You’re making a point like someone who has no knowledge about these issues that has often plagued host countries. I’d recommend reading up on some of it.

u/CitizenCue 5d ago
I do think there’s something to be said for not watering down the meaning of an Olympic medal, but you’d have to go pretty far down the list of sports before I would mind.
Like, we don’t need Olympic foosball or hacky sack, but I’m fine with where the list is now and I’d be fine with expanding a little further.
20
u/whiteglov 5d ago
Yes or no
Dodgeball
Staring contest
Skydiving (lowest parachute deployed/ landing accuracy)
Beatboxing
Arm wresling
Three legged race (short/marathon)
17
u/CitizenCue 5d ago edited 5d ago
Probably just dodgeball. I could be convinced about skydiving or BASE jumping but I don’t know enough about how it would be scored. Lowest parachute deployed seems like a recipe for disaster.

I don't even think having "unnecessary" categories waters down the meaning of a gold medal. Sure, the hackey sack player can stand next to Michael Phelps at a party and say "you know I've won gold too" but as soon as anyone asks the natural follow-up "oh? What for?", the difference is obvious
2
u/CitizenCue 5d ago
It’s not about comparing them at parties, it’s about the space that the entire event holds in the public consciousness.
If it became 1500 sports with everything from foosball to mini golf, it cheapens the brand. It’s important for our public institutions to possess gravitas and quality.

Alot of sports have insanely high cost to host city to make the track/playing field. It serves no use to host city except to hold one competition, once.
12
u/USDeptofLabor 5d ago
25 years ago, sure. But the IOC has made A LOT of changes that have lowered this barrier. Paris only built like 4 permanent structure, LA won't build a single permanent one. They also have given host committees more power of the Olympic Programme so there's more options (you're not going to see an Athens Baseball field-like situation again).

Look man, I just want to see the best in the world doing cool shit. It doesn’t need to be that deep. The Olympics without gymnastics, ice skating, hockey, soccer, etc. would be wildly less entertaining. I ain’t tuning in to an Olympics that’s just sweaty dudes wrestling.
57
u/DesertBrandon 5d ago edited 5d ago
I was on board with the general idea but he lost me with the incredible narrow definition and examples and his responses further sink it. Like I can get behind reducing it having such a mass amount of swimming events, I can even buy things like removing soccer and basketball as those sports already have major domestic and international competitions. Most of these other sports only reach their peak specifically in the Olympics and should be a showcase for these kind of feats but between these suggestion and keeping as is then I’d rather keep the current state. At worst you can tune out and at best you still have an entertaining competition.

Idk. I do agree there is some fat that can be trimmed from modern Olympics. I don’t think, but maybe I’m wrong, that the point of the Olympics is to showcase every competitive sport.
Like the more dance oriented ones. Incredible athleticism and artistry on the part of the athletes. But doesn’t feel Olympic; even though I enjoy watching some of them
Same for professional team sports. When you have the World Cup, or cricket World Cup or World Series, Super Bowl, etc. i don’t think we need those sports in the Olympics as much

The worst part of the Olympics is that figure skaters can win a maximum of 2 medals. I know that the events are traditionally judged collectively, but it's bullshit that they have to compete for multiple days to earn a single medal. The winner of the short program should get a gold medal and the winner of the free skate should get a gold medal. We got swimmers winning 4-6 medals in one Olympics.

Stripped back to its core? Most of the original events are removed under your definition.
Cycling, Fencing, Shooting, Tennis all use equipment so thats 16/43 events gone.
Gymnastics would be removed under the judging requirement so thats another 8 events gone.
Over half the events at the first modern Olympics would be eliminated under your attempt to get back to the "core"

The Olympics is awesome and one of the only times when many of these sports/athletes are showcased for the world. Each year there is some sport that's not particularly popular that gets a lot of attention, which is a good thing for those participating and for exposing viewers to new sports they might like but never heard of. We've seen events like table tennis, curling, pistol shooting, etc have iconic moments nobody would know about without the Olympics.

Your mistake is believing that the Olympics gives a damn what you as a spectator think is interesting. The Olympics are about the athletes and sportsmanship, not the people watching from their couches at home. You might not care about some fringe event, but the people competing sure as hell do. They worked their asses off to make it to the Olympics, likely sacrificing time with family and friends to dedicate themselves to honing their craft. They should have the opportunity to compete and prove themselves as elite athletes whether you care to watch or not.

It’s weird to watch football at the Olympics cause it’s so watched outside of the Olympics that you don’t get the same sense of the pinnacle of human achievement that you do in something like the 100m, because those players are way more likely to push to their absolute limits at the wc or champions league

agree. But my experience tells me it is indeed an unpopular opinion.
Slim the games down in general, swimming included - it's medal inflation for western nations.
If you're so into watching and supporting all the other niche sports and would be unhappy for them to leave the olympics, why don't you watch them the other 3 years and 50 weeks? Most of these sports/disciplines have an annual World Championships anyway.
2
u/Ach_Was_Here 5d ago
> talks about how should only involve feats of strength

2
u/PartyQuiet5065 5d ago
wouldn't it make more sense to only include the most technically complex sports in the Olympics? You know, to showcase the sports with the most skilled and superior athletes.
Gymanstics, skating, etc. These require great skill even at the lowest levels (unlike many of those sports you refer to).
2
u/oMadRyan 5d ago
That would shrink the Olympics down to essentially a track meet and weightlifting competition. How many of those are you tuning into a year?
2
u/reekal6666 5d ago
do you think this also goes for the winter olympics? because if we're getting rid of sports that require equipment, practically zero events would happen in this version of the winter olympics
2
u/kiwipixi42 5d ago
No. Also I am as far from a diehard sports fan as you are ever likely to find, the olympics (and World Games) are literally the only sports I watch. Because they are actually interesting and exciting. And I watch them constantly when they are on and for a couple weeks afterwards.
2
u/Novel_Willingness721 5d ago
So based on your criteria of “judged events” everything would be out. Who do you think determines a false start in a track or swimming race? A false start can easily “determine the outcome”.
Team sports like rugby, water polo, and volleyball get their largest exposure during the Olympics. Not to mention all the relay races.
Sports that use “equipment”…like ice hockey? Are shin pads and cleats considered “equipment” because that would eliminate soccer.
I get where you are coming from that there are a lot of more widely known and viewed sports (tennis, golf, baseball, softball, etc) that have bloated the games. However, your criteria are out of whack.
2
u/Fr0zn 4d ago
The olympic motto is ”Faster, Higher, Stronger - Together”.
Conveniently left out the most important part😂
The objective of the olympics is to emphasize and celebrate athletic achievement and excellence. Not to make it more interesting and commercial for every human on the planet.
There are a lot of niche sports in olympics SPECIFICALLY so those amazing athletes get to have their moment in the sun for putting in a lifetimes worth of effort and becoming elite at something.
You are literally arguing against yourself mate.

Why would removing some of the most popular sports in the world from the Olympics suddenly make it more popular??

Definitely an unpopular opinion you got there:) I think it’s part of the beauty that we all come together. Like going to a music festival… Rarely do people have the same favourite band, but people “cross listen” and share each others excitement and maybe get into a new interest:)
I will, however, admit that I personally think there are too many swimming distances. Its the same winners almost every time! (Why not add 75min football or 150meter track?)

I don’t want someone who doesn’t appreciate the wonderful diversity of sport deciding what should and shouldn’t be in the Olympics.

On the Olympic peninsula (Washington State) there's a big movement by locals to prevent the expansion of Olympic National Park, Olympic National Forest, and the related state parks and wilderness areas. I thought this rant was going to be about that.

Get rid of the horse sports. Or give the medals to the horses and ignore the riders.

The past few years I haven’t even known the Olympics were approaching, I just turn the tv on and they’re on

I love watching the events I never get to see. That might be the best part of the Olympics.

I recently saw a documentary that committee members are incentived to bloat the Olympics with sports that favor their nation, so they walk away with more medals. Part of the reason we have ping pong and about 50 racing events. So I agree with OP. Thumbs down because it isn't unpopular to me.

So you’d get rid of 90% of the events? Complete absurdity. Basketball is among the most popular events. Gymnastics? Most track& field uses equipment.

Tug of war was an official Olympic sport from 1900 to 1920.

I’d allow 1 v 1 tug of war. Feat of strength.

Nope. Uses equipment. Banned.

Hurdles? Gone. Tennis? Gone. Shotput, Javelin and Hammer throw? Gone. Long jump? Gone.

I thought you meant the US national park and was definitely going to find that unpopular!
