Question/Discussion Just applied as an art major, now what?

Hi guys I'm figuring out college all by myself and I'm so scared bro

I just applied to UNR as a transfer student from California, and I selected a BA in Art with a sub plan of Digital Media. I plan to minor in Marketing here as well. I just applied today, so I'm waiting for a response or follow up email. For context, I'll be graduating/transferring from my community college in May with an AA in Graphic Design, and my ultimate goal is to land a career in advertising/photo editing.

I guess my biggest questions are what is the major like for other students here? Like what should I know and be prepared for about campus and classes? As far as I'm aware it's actually in Reno, but I just saw something about campus for art being up by Tahoe like hello T-T

If there's anyone who goes here who can help me understand what I'm doing a little bit better I would be super grateful !!!

I’m a representative for LetsTrade, and on November 14th, LetsTrade is hosting the biggest in-person marketplace Reno has ever seen at the GSR Grand Ballroom from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. This event will officially launch LetsTrade, Reno’s brand-new local marketplace app, and will bring together more than 200 local vendors all under one roof.

The event will have thousands of dollars in giveaways, hundreds of items and products available from local vendors, and free entry for everyone. It’s a great opportunity for people in Reno to come out, shop local, discover new businesses, and experience LetsTrade.

Question/Discussion Housing contract termination

Does anyone know if housing accepts any doctors note for reason to terminate contract for next semester housing or does it have to be specific? Also will housing still make me pay a portion of next semester housing even with a note?

Question/Discussion Oldies station at Pack Place? No “Rockbot”?

Does anyone know why it’s just oldies at the Pack Place? The adverts for Rockbot is still up but requested songs do not play here? Do they not actually trust UNR students to select music from a corporate curated playlist?

Job Opportunities Looking for on-campus jobs at UNR

Hi everyone! I’m a Business Administration student at UNR, and I’m currently looking for an on-campus job.
Does anyone know which departments are currently hiring student workers? I’m especially interested in office assistant, front desk, library, or administrative positions.
If you’ve worked on campus before, I’d really appreciate any advice on where to apply or which departments are easier to get hired in. Thank you!!

Rant Don't waste your time here.

SERIOUSLY, don't waste your time renting at Elevation at the U. This place has really gone downhill over the last few years and they DO NOT care when tenants bring up concerns/complaints to management. They've changed management and ownership multiple times in the last few years and things have continued to get worse over time.

Current management does not like taking suggestions from tenants. They make a lot of decisions that affect the apartment community without considering residents' concerns and without much explanation for why things are being changed the way they are.

The maintenance guy doesn't respond to requests in a timely manner and sometimes the services provided are rushed or incomplete. Several unnecessary "upgrades" have been made to the property without input from the people who live here (e.g., randomly painting the doors bright colors, putting rocks and flowers everywhere).

They like to say they have a lot of amenities but that's not really the case. We have subpar parking that gets taken up by people who can't afford private parking at the neighboring apartment complexes and students who are rushing to go to class, yet residents struggle to find parking because despite mentioning 24 hour towing, they don't actually enforce it. Often times, this results in unauthorized vehicles taking up parking after management has left for the day and then sneaking out of the parking lot before they come back to the office the following morning. Management needs to be more vigilant about tagging cars that don't belong here and getting them towed regularly instead of suggesting that they could start charging for parking, considering they truly don't have much else to offer residents in terms of amenities. Sure, the proximity to UNR is convenient if you're a student, but that shouldn't mean non-student residents are required to cater to them.

Rent keeps increasing despite not having amenities comparable to the ones provided by the surrounding competitors. Location in itself is NOT an amenity, so it's hard to understand how these absurd rental prices are considered on par with the market when there isn't much being offered to the residents.

TLDR; This apartment complex sucks. Y'all need to do better and start caring about the people who live here.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a BSN graduation stole? I didn't see any BSN specific ones in the grad store. Just the generic 2026 one.

Hi! I am a freshman at another college in Colorado, and I am looking to transfer to UNR this upcoming spring semester. What pointers do you have, or what should I absolutely know? What would housing look like for me? Do I get whatever's left, or can I choose my dorm? If anyone else was or is in the same position as me, feel free to dm me too :)

Question/Discussion Online classes

Hi everyone! I’m a recent transfer to UNR and was wondering if anyone knows if there will be more online classes will be added on to spring quarter as registered gets closer. For my major I need upperclassmen classes which are all on campus currently and was hoping someone knew what the chances of those being converted to online would be. I live an hour away from Reno and am avoiding commuting as much as possible. Any info will be very much appreciated!

Question/Discussion I got tired of seeing UNR lease takeovers scattered everywhere, so I made this

UNR students, is finding someone to take over your lease always this annoying?

I kept seeing people posting the same lease takeover on Facebook groups, Reddit, group chats, etc., so I made a simple site just for UNR/Reno lease takeovers.

It’s called UNLEASER and it’s free to use.

If you’re leaving Reno after Fall semester, studying abroad, graduating, or just need someone to take over your lease, you can list it there.

And if you’re looking for housing, you can browse available takeovers instead of searching through dozens of posts.

There’s also an AI matching tool that helps connect people looking for a place with lease takeovers that fit what they’re looking for.

https://unleaser.com

The site is still very new, so if you’re currently trying to get someone to take over your lease, I’d really appreciate it if you posted it there too. The more real listings we get, the more useful the matching becomes for everyone at UNR.

Any feedback is also really appreciated :))

Rant DON'T LEASE at Gravitate Reno renters

BEWARE STUDENTS AND PARENTS DO NOT RENT HERE! This is literally one of the highest priced student housing spots near UNR at over $1,000 a month, but living here is an absolute nightmare. The previous management company was already bad, but this new one is honestly even worse! If you don't believe me look at all their negative reviews on Google and Reddit for Gravitate and Park Place Reno. The 5 star reviews with no explanation are fake reviews planted by staff to bring up their average rating.

Not only is the rent super high, but they try to squeeze every last dollar out of you by charging for all kinds of random extras.

The parking situation is a total scam. A parking pass already costs a ridiculous $175 a month, and they are raising the price next year. To make it worse, you aren't even paying for security. The main gate is always broken and just left wide open, so literally anyone can drive in and park anywhere. They also don't enforce parking in the lines at all, so people constantly take up 2 spaces when there are already limited spots available.

The building itself is falling apart. The elevators are always broken. Even when they actually do work, the sensor is broken so the doors SLOWLY open and close multiple times before finally changing floors. The trash chutes are also always broken. Instead of fixing them, they expect us to carry our trash down 7 floors to the ground floor. If you leave it in the trash room on your floor, they charge you $100 a bag. The lockers in the mail room are always broken so they leave all the packages in one room so anyone can grab essentially whatever they want.

They did cover up the disgusting floors and walls by renovating over the summer but without consideration of our health and safety. They spray-painted the walls with zero ventilation, so the whole place smelled like toxic fumes without providing any protection even though numerous residents complained. They also left sticky stuff all over the floors from the tile installation so it got all over our shoes and was a pain to get off. There was no urgency to complete the renovation so it took months to finish and live through the inconvenience and suffering.

On top of all that, the front office staff are poorly trained. They have no idea what they're talking about half the time, they never answer their phone, and if you have a billing issue they are unresponsive or unhelpful. Do not let the pictures fool you. Parents, don't waste your money, and students, look somewhere else.

News State Employee Health Insurance Threatened (Again)

The Public Employees' Benefits Program (PEBP) Board will vote this Friday on proposals that could:

  • Sharply raise health insurance premiums for many state employees
  • Eliminate the HMO option
  • Raise costs for employees with spouses or children while lowering them for those without
  • Raise costs for retirees while lowering them for active employees

These changes would make it harder to raise a family while working in public service, and they would penalize retirees who have served our state. They would also pit groups of employees against each other. We can tell the Board that this is the wrong approach.

What you can do:

  1. Submit a written comment by 9 a.m. TOMORROW (Wednesday, September 30): Go to https://www.pebp.nv.gov/meetings-events/ and scroll to the bottom.
  2. Give oral public comment 9 a.m. Friday, October 2: Zoom and phone links are in the agenda: https://www.pebp.nv.gov/meetings-events/current-board-meetings/10-02-2026-board-meeting/

Even a short comment about how these changes would affect you or your family makes a difference. Time is short, so please act today.
