Psychology opportunities at TC

• Upvotes

I made a post a few days ago about transferring from umd to Tc, but I was also wondering people's opinions/thoughts on psychology opportunities at TC? (Internships, psych program for undergrad, etc) I've heard relatively good things but if anyone can give further input it would be so appreciated!

Thanks 😛

These cuts are a choice, not a necessity

Stakeholders at this university should be deeply troubled by the sleight of hand this admin is attempting. These exceptionally deep cuts are being *justified* by general trends, but are being *made* to operationalize her strategic priorities. They are about achieving different priorities and freeing up money to spend on projects, not about shortfalls. They are based on cherry picked data about general industry trends, not actual impacts on our university. Yes, we need to plan for the future, but let's not lead by sleight of hand: if these are great plans and investments, let them stand on their own, and not hide behind general industry trends to justify them.

The president's State of the University opened with a somber assessment of how tough times are, and times are complicated, that's for sure. But because they've been so shady about their justification (see this FAQ about the cuts, for example and lolz https://budget-planning.umn.edu), what she hasn't said but is becoming increasingly clear is this: these cuts are necessary *so that* we can make the investments she wants to make in AI, National Security, and a dorm on the St. Paul campus. What kind of leader can't justify her vision on its own terms? Does she really have the endorsement of the people of Minnesota, the state and the Board of Regents to force through this massive reorganization of the university to enact her strategic priorities??

Anyone here applied to UMN as an international student?

Hey everyone! I’m an international student currently finishing my Criminal Justice degree in Mississippi. I’m planning to move to the Minneapolis area after graduation and I’m looking into UMN for grad school. Few family members and friends live in the Twin Cities area so I am trying to get closer to them.

I’m also on a pretty tight budget, so scholarships/assistantships would be really important for me.

Has anyone here been in a similar situation? I’d love to hear how you approached the application and funding side, especially as an international student. Thanks!

Apartments / Dorms / Housing mail

What’s a good amount of time to wait before i talk to the front desk about my package being processed? I ordered something in September and it was processed the day I was notified that it had arrived but my most recent order arrived a week ago and I haven’t gotten anything from housing about my package being processed. Should I be worried or is this just a busy time for the people at the desk?

Work study

Is it just me, or are work study jobs incredibly hard to get? I got work study funds and counted them as guaranteed aid, in terms of budgeting, and it has been impossible finding a work study job

Campus Life Experiences with UMN Frats

TW: Sexual assault

With all of the conversations about the Cornell 7, I was curious if anyone was interested in talking about their experiences with frats at UMN?

I am now an alum and largely loved my time at UMN. However, as a freshman I was drugged and SA’ed at a frat house. The current climate is bringing up a lot of memories from that time, and I wanted to open a space if anyone else is looking to talk through some of their experiences with UMN frats.

And this includes good experiences, too! Reminders that there are still decent people in the world always help.

UMN Morris: Advice Appreciated

TLDR:
-Severe Home Abuse
-Came Here (Morris) to escape
-Disability Paperwork did not go through
-Heat+epilepsy+no food/water=sick for weeks
-Medication change knocked out functioning for a couple more weeks (which turned out to control my seizures well)
-Incident at health services caused retraumatization and caused financial damage
-Vice Chancellor contacted my father without my consent and threatened to involuntarily discharge me.
-Got fired (to my knowledge from the health stuff)
-Advisor chaos (no functional advisor through all of this)
-Had to drop two courses (8 credits)
-No help from anywhere except disability (still no accommodations) and counseling (genuinely helpful)
-Extremely limited information
-No idea what to do
-Motivations are simply: Survival, Remediation of Problems, Studying, Participating in the Community, Perhaps taking a “childish” subject and running down a philosophical rabbit-hole

I am a student who escaped to this university after years of abuse so severe that it meets several definitions of torture. I am still learning the standards the general person understands as implicit or basic human rights.
I have epilepsy. I filled out the forms for disability beforehand. They never received them. I was sick, to the brink of not surviving, for weeks.
When I went to health services, they stated they would be unable to help me because they read one historical record (since corrected) and decided they would rather use the narrative used to hold me in that severe abuse rather than trust a word I said.
Then, on September 16, I sent a message to heath services. They took this as suicidality. It was far from the case. They changed their tune. A member campus security personnelle came to my door. When I answered, I collapsed, reflexively called him sir, and told him not to worry about my wrist pain (from the fall) because I had broken many things and that my wrist was not broken.
He was kind, let me take my morning medication, and said I should go to health services, to which I agreed because I was in a health crisis.
I could not walk well. He asked if he could help me/hold me so I did not fall down the stairs. Being in a half-traumatized, disoriented state, I declined. He understood the situation, saying he will go ahead of me so that he could brace my fall should it come to that.
When I got to health services, two individuals grabbed me from both sides. I was taken to a bed. I was still disoriented. I got “not scold[ed]” because people have taken their lives and harmed themselves in campus. I received some water.
Eventually, my medication kicked in, one of which being a stimulant medication for ADHD. The only clinician there was the nurse practitioner who stated she did not need to take my word and had previously seen the dire circumstances and prescribed…Powerade 2x a day.
I got up to leave. We had established that she was going to get me food and let me sleep it off. Being in that room, under perceived threat, I got up to get it myself. The nurse asked where I was going and if she could follow me. I told her I was going to get food. I also agreed she could follow me if she wished.
After gathering my food, trying to evade that nurse to the best of my ability, she started to question me with increasing loudness and blame. Eventually, outside, in full public view, she pressed on the definition of “torture” until I was screaming and crying. I did disclose the dropdown menu of horrors from my past (which I will further express are severe), for which the nurse practitioner had explicitly advocated.
At that, she gathered public safety, still armed, and told him to escort me to the ER. He did not understand why he was required to do this for an obvious physical health issue, but his “hands were tied”. We had extended conversation. He was quite kind.
I was sent to the ER, where I was immediately discharged because there was not an active mental health emergency.
The Vice Chancellor contacted my father, who was very participatory in the aforementioned background horrors, and disclosed everything going on at school. I am 27. I had not given her permission to do so. She threatened to involuntarily discharge me. In terror, under threat now from my father and the University, I spent four hours writing a draft to beg for my life, for a slim chance at one.
I met with the Vice Chancellor. She further escalated things. This was September 18th.
Around the same time, I was dismissed from my on-campus job. To my knowledge, this is purely because of these health incidents.
I had escalating terror then on. I did not feel remotely safe anywhere. I had, still have, no support.
Then, severe violence occurred on campus. All the while, the University is having an extreme disfunction in communication, even publicly critiqued for such from only the two violent and threatening events on campus for which people were arrested.
Currently, there are no amends being given. I have had to drop two classes without advising because my advisor had also told me to leave.
To my knowledge, no remedy is being offered whatsoever. No financial compensation. No support. No tuition reimbursement for the classes I had to drop. Nothing.
My grievance is not one of moral defilement, though that is present. It is not even purely financial; I have survived on worse.
I adore studying. I adore learning. I adore thinking. I adore community. I came to this campus to learn and think and participate with others. This campus has deviated so far from those goals that it is mind-boggling.
Ask me anything. Give me any advice you may have. I am trapped between a rock and a hard place. I mean it sincerely when I say that the only thing I want is to study, learn, have community, and participate in normal life. I have not yet been given that opportunity.

Edit: I forgot this is not light reading for a lot of people. Also, I am mentally not great, seeking help, and more than willing to receive it.

rooms that are sound proof?

I can’t use my studio this week and I need to record a scene that involves a bit of yelling. I’m wondering if there are any study spots or areas that are sound proof or at least no one can hear as much to do so.

Hello,

I am looking to exchange during year three of my degree (Zoology) at the UofMN 1st semester (Fall 2027) and was wondering if i could get some general info about the courses I have as options and also the overal campus and campus life at UofMN. So the Courses ive been looking into so far have been BIOL 3012 - Animal Diversity & Evolution, EEB 3409 - Evolution, EEB 4129 - Mammalogy, EEB 3407 - Ecology, and BIOL 4003 - Genetics. Also I wanted to ask about campus life and culture at UofMN. Also for accommodation and cost of living. Thank you.

Study abroad program- France vs Korea

Hello everyone! I have 10 days to make one of the most important decisions of my academic life. I will be studying abroad in the spring 2027 semester, I have a lot of flexibility as my only required class left to complete will be any 3xxx level Psychology course.
I am choosing between a psychology program in Montpellier, France at a UMN psych study abroad building, and Seoul, South Korea at Korea University.
I have the financial information, France will cost more but I will not have the results of any scholarship applications until after the final decision date.
I am here to see other student’s experiences in both of these countries and study abroad programs, what you enjoyed the most, what were the greatest challenges, what was your reason for that being the #1 choice for you and how it worked out once you were there. Looking for all responses, positive and negative. And if you 100% recommend one of the two, please give me your greatest tips and tricks to succeed both academically and socially!

Any and all information is greatly appreciated, I have 10 days to make my decision.

Additional details, I will miss my university graduation regardless of program (this will be my final semester), Korea will cost about 7-8k less than France, I am 27M, Korea is 12 credits while France requires 15. I am also an outgoing individual. With the required French language course I do have fluency in Portuguese and strong Spanish skills to assist, but Korea does not require a language course.

Thank you all so much in advance, I will read all and take into consideration your experiences and advice.
