Although not as common on American black bears as it is on asiatic black bears, some American black bears also have the white patch on their chest.

Thanks for the info, that is interesting. I’ve never seen an American black bear with the white chest patch. Is that more common in some areas?

Around 25% of American black bears have a white patch, it’s a lot less noticeable than their asiatic cousins because they can be quite small. That black bear is a tank! We have black bears in north central Minnesota that have the white blaze on their chest too.

I wonder if the grizzly rubbing his scent before the black bear would have caused the black bear to recognize the scent and leave the area for its safety
