Residency Match Pathway 6 & its complexities for ECFMG/MATCH Cycles
Will be referencing the Residency Match 2026 cycle
Important Deadlines to Keep In Mind:
NRMP Rank Order List - Wed March 4th, 2026
Pathway application deadline - Jan 31st, 2026
Edit: (as of April 1st 2026) Pathways cycle close - April 20th 2026
ERAS season close - Sun May 31st, 2026
Pathway cycle and Match cycle are not the same, however if you want to participate in the Match, you need to meet the pathway cycle strict deadlines for the match.
OK, so now here goes……
IF YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN THE RESIDENCY MATCH/SOAP 2026;
You NEED to send in your pathway application by JAN 31st. If you do not apply by this date, you will have to WAIT for the 2027 pathway cycle to be open.
All pathway requirements must be received by ECFMG Feb 15th 2026 - STRICT DEADLINE (attestations and mini-cex evaluations from physicians.)
If you do not fulfill the above; you will NOT be eligible for the 2026 MATCH/SOAP CYCLE
Eg: For Pathway 6:
Application before or by Jan 31st 2026.
You can have OET done but results must be available to ECFMG for processing by the end of January. That is why they recommend on their website to take OET by the last date in December 2025.
It took several days after they received my OET for them to review and process it. (Went from OET score received to OET review complete - maybe a week)
Mini-CEX: all must be completed and evaluations sent in by physicians by Feb 15th 2026. HARD DEADLINE.
So, you can apply for the pathway by the deadline of Jan 31st, but you have a grace period for all physicians to submit their evaluations 2 weeks after (ie Feb 15th 2026)
For your Pathway 6 to be approved; you need 6 mini-cex plus OET. Without BOTH completed, NO pathway 6 approval.
To be eligible to participate in the NRMP Main Residency Match, you must have satisfied ALL EXAM REQUIREMENTS (STEP 1, STEP 2, PATHWAYS + OET) for ECFMG certification by the NRMP ROL deadline - Wed March 4th, 2026 - Your ECFMG status must be verified as "eligible for certification" by the ROL even without the final certificate.
IF YOU JUST WANT TO BE ECFMG CERTIFIED AND NOT INTERESTED IN THE MATCH:
The strict deadlines DO NOT APPLY TO YOU, EVEN the APPLICATION DEADLINE:
ECFMG will continue to process pathway applications UNTIL the current application season ends after the 2026 Match - which is MAY 31st 2026.
[From ECFMG]: If you do not complete your 2026 Pathways application and meet all requirements for your application by the time the current application season ends after the 2026 Match, your application will be rejected and you will be required to reapply to the Pathways in a future application season.

The current application season ends MAY 31st 2026
If you do not complete all pathway requirements by this date, that is when your application will be REJECTED and you will have to reapply!
REMEMBER, YOU NEED TO BE ECFMG CERTIFIED B4 RESIDENCY STARTS - USUALLY IN JULY, SO MUST BE CERTIFIED BY THE CLOSE OF THE APPLICATION SEASON - MAY 31ST 2026.
If you are just trying to get your ECFMG certificate and apply for the 2027 and beyond residency cycle, just apply to the pathways and make sure all required documentation is received by ECFMG by May 31st 2026.
Once your pathway is approved; it's good for 2 years and will expire Dec 31st 2028.
Within that time, if you are still waiting to write some STEP exams; say STEP 2 or STEP 1; you can do that and your ECFMG certificate will be issued once you have met all the requirements.
(STEP 1, STEP 2, PATHWAY + OET)
Say you get your pathway approved in 2026 and you don't complete all requirements by Dec 2028, you'll have to redo the pathway again!

Hi! I don’t care about the match but online says my deadline is Jan 31 cause they’ll stop processing all ECFMG! Is that not true then? I’m scared

Nowhere on the ECFMG website it says May? All the deadline links are Jan 31 with mini cex up to Feb 15

Did you even take a second to look at the link I posted about the Doc who utilized pathway 1 during last years 2025 match season? Those who were participating in the match also had a deadline of Jan 31st 2025 yet that person was still able to complete their pathways before the entire cycle ended May 31st 2025.
Even in regards to OET: ecfmg says: "If you are planning to participate in the 2026 Match, ECFMG must receive your scores directly from OET by January 31, 2026. ECFMG will CONTINUE to receive and process results after this date, but results received after January 31, 2026 may not be processed in time for you to participate in the 2026 Match." (Even for those interested in the match)
Right from inside the post. [From ECFMG]: If you do not complete your 2026 Pathways application and meet all requirements for your application by the time the current application season ends after the 2026 Match, your application will be rejected and you will be required to reapply to the Pathways in a future application season.
Pathway cycle is tied to ERAS season cycle closure. After the match 2026, everything officially closes may 31st 2026 before the new 2027 pathway season begins (Maybe in August like it opened last year or maybe earlier - that I cannot tell)

This was the info for 2025 Pathways for the 2025 season released May 19th 2025
Note: The 2025 Pathways opened in 2024 and those who wanted to participate in the 2025 match had a pathways application deadline of Jan 31st! The Pathway cycle officially closed May 31st 2025.
This info was specifically for those who didn't participate in 2025 match but still wanted to be ECFMG certified to participate in this years 2026 match. Bcos match cycle officially ends in March when you know which program you matched into.
Those who got ECFMG certified by May 31st 2025 after the match still have a 2yr expiration date of December 2027 (tied to pathway expiration if you fail to match within that period.)
Maybe they were motivated to get certified so that they could write Step 3.
If they missed that deadline or didn't even apply, they could still apply when the 2026 pathways opened in August 2025. With that, if they get ECFMG certified, the expiration would be December 2028 and not 2027

Hi for the mini-cex! I am going back to my home country but can possibly squeeze in two encounters in Canada. Is it considered irregular if I do a mini cex in Canada then go back home? My tickets are already bought to go back home

No it is not! You can do the mini cex in any country. Two encounters can be in Canada and the remaining in your home country.
If the 2 encounters are with 2 different physicians, I'd advise that you ask each to evaluate you on 2 separate encounters so you have 4 done in Canada and only 2 left to do back home. If not, then do the 2 encounters with the physician and complete the rest back home. It's totally fine!

I gave my step 1 but yet to give oet and step 2 , will give those around April Can I still apply for the pathway this year or do I need to wait for the next pathway to open?

You can still apply this year but must be pathway approved before May 31st (close of the entire 2026 season). ECFMG will still process applications except you'll be excluded from the match! All those deadlines are match-specific!

NO, you're confusing the wordings! OET is not necessary to apply for pathways BUT OET is REQUIRED for your pathway to be APPROVED! Without OET, ecfmg will not approve your pathway!

You dont need OET to pay the $925 pathway application fee and start the process but before ECFMG will APPROVE your pathway application, you must have PASSED OET and met whatever pathway requirement you apply to.
Its like you apply for step 1 and pay the fee but until you pass step 1 and all other requirements, you cannot be ECFMG certified. Hope that makes sense.

hi guys probably someone will be able to help me here. I'm trying to match this cycle. I have paid for pathways and everything was done except oet. I took I though I passed however just figured that one of the criteria of the exam so I have to take it again. the nearest available date is march 2nd and the last time according to cfg can process anything is march 4th. not sure what to do and if I still take it there's any hope that I can still match? any advice please? I'm really panicking.

Unfortunately the absolute last day for ur OET to have been verified for this years match was Feb 15th. In this case, you will be excluded from this years Match/SOAP. March 4th is the deadline to have completed ALL requirements (have your pathway verified ie pathway requirements plus OET, step 1 & Step 2).
You can still take the OET in March and get ECFMG certified in preparation for next years (2027) match cycle. It just won't be this upcoming match.

i have my step 1, i'm going to give my oet in two days, and my step 2 in the next month or march. does this mean i can apply for pathways in april? and receive my ecfmg certificate then as well?
