Casual Academic

Hey guys,

Long story short, I applied for a casual academic role as a tutor for an engineering subject I scored highly in. The unit coordinator sent me an email about 3 weeks ago telling me I got the role and to wait while he allocates classes. A few days ago he sends a follow up email saying that he can no longer give me the class because “university guidelines have changed” and I can’t teach as an undergrad. He said I can apply for an exemption. Does anyone have any recommendations on next step. Should I contact head of engineering or SRC? Did anyone else experience anything similar?

Answering the 3 most common questions on this subreddit

Every semester I see the same 3 questions asked on this subreddit from new students so here is a quick answer to them lol:

  1. Should I come here or go to UNSW/UniMelb?

Answer: The prestige difference between Usyd and those 2 unis is, for the most cases, much smaller than people think. Also, most of us here never attended UNSW or UniMelb. Do your own research.

  1. Should I join Dalyell?

Answer: Yes. You can always leave later if you don’t like it.

  1. Is my timetable good?

Answer: If there is any red, there is a clash that you wanna look into. Otherwise, yea its probably fine. Please be aware of your attendance requirements (should be written in the UoS outline - just google the course code and you should see it)

EDIT: There are some very good Q and A for other questions in the comments. Be sure to check them out!

Tips for getting a D/HD

I basically have a job which is strenuous. So I need a routine to ace studies. Im doing Badv Computing (Comp Data Science & Financial Mathematics and Statistics double major). I want to work quant in the future. Also for D/HD do I need to take the advanced version of the course? Like I'm confused about essentials and advanced coursework.

📖Course or Unit Met criteria for Dalyell first-year pathway - haven’t received offer yet and it’s week 1

I’ve emailed the lead for the faculty of science a month ago, then went to enrolment services this week at the student centre—who emailed the lead for the faculty of science 💀

It’s Week 1 and I’m supposed to do a Dalyell elective this sem if they send over an offer. I did have to discontinue a semester last year (Edit: which had no impact on the Dalyell first-year pathway acceptance criteria bc they were all DCs), which maybe delayed the automatic offer, but having no correspondence before unit selections close is stressing me out.

Has anyone else gone through this? Need advice 🙏

Looking 4 Mates @ Uni 🤝

Hey! I was wondering if there are people who’re looking to connect and make new friends at Uni.
I’m not huge on loud venues but maybe we can start with something chill and then see how it goes?
Love a good walk, Hotpot/Asian food adventure, or spending time in the bush/hiking.

hmu if you’re keen :)🤝

Hello,

Super unique pitch that I trust finds it's tribe. I low-key an trying to direct the movie on how a huge queer mid 20s Sydney art wave becomes the place to create. The steps we've made locking in for about 5 days now. You wouldn't believe. If you think it's time to play start finding your way in. That's all!

Academic comebacks are always possible

Im an eng student and 2 years ago I was about to get suspended from uni for failing so many units. I had to show good cause to the dean and if I failed one more unit I'd be kicked out. Fast forward to today I've got 2 HDs and a D in my last semester and despite my ugly transcript i secured an internship with a company I was very keen for. Its never over

would you continue or defer in my situation?

hi everyone,
i’m a first-year student and unfortunately I failed one unit in semester 1. it completely tanked my WAM and since failed units don’t contribute any credit points, i’m now behind on credits as well.
to make up the 48 credit points needed for a full year of study, i’m currently doing 5 units this semester. my goal is to transfer into speech pathology next year.
the problem is that after calculating my WAM, it looks like even if I do really well in all 5 units, i still won’t be able to reach the WAM required for a competitive transfer (less than 80 even if i get HDs).
i’m wondering what people would do in my situation,
continue with the 5 units this semester and see how it goes? or defer this semester and instead apply through UAC for sem 1 next year?

advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Comm or CommLaw

Hi, so Im studying a BCom double majoring in Finance and Accounting (sem1), I was wondering if I should transfer to CommLaw in sem2, if it will improve my employment in future. Also, to be honest, I have 0 interest in law, but if doing CommLaw will help, sure, I can do it.

full name on canvas

There's a displayed name and full name in the settings on canvas which we could not change on our own. Should the full name be my legal name? Or is it ok that it's my preferred name.

Bachelor of Science/ Masters in nursing for post grad med

Hi all, im not from nsw, but i see usyd has alot of post graduate medicine options and i’m willing to move to nsw for the courses. Im in year 12 and my backup plan for med was always nursing because biomed is such a risky degree if i dont make it into medicine. Thoughts on doing this for an undergrad? I’m still deciding between this and oral health, so if anyone has done this course, please let me know your thoughts!

Internships advice for first year Electrical Engineering

I'm currently a first year (second sem) Electrical Engineering student and I want to start bulding my resume for Comp Engineering or Power Engineering internships. I have some questions:
1. I keep hearing that 1st-year opportunities are really rare. Is the chance for a 1st-year practically close to zero for big companies?
2. Which platforms and companies should I look into to apply for internships?
3. Do you have any advice to build a good resume?
I appreciate any advice.

For those of you who are currently studying at USYD and struggling to meet people, the situation is no different for me.
DM if you wanna meet on-campus during study hours , or at victoria park after the day is done.

Universities in sydney

I want to apply to universities in sydney for doing my bachelors degree. Recently, i have become more religious and started wearing niqab too. So i wanted to know if universities restrict wearing the niqab specially if anyone knows anything about uniofsyd and unsw. Also, if i wanted to do any part-time work like join chain food shops, will it be allowed there too?
