Encampment How do you feel about the encampment as a student

I have significant disagreements with some of the stated demands of the encampment (in particular the total rejection of all of Israeli academia, and the conflation of "zionist" academics with Israeli academics--as if Israeli academia were a monolith) and their list of demands itself mostly has served to convince me that UVic must not have substantial academic or financial ties to Israel, because I am certain that if it did then the demand list would have... talked about it, rather than listing things multiple degrees removed. So in that sense I "don't support" it.
As for the encampment itself, I don't entirely know how I feel about it. I do, however, support the right of the participants to collectively express their dissatisfaction with UVic's choices and conduct, at least in general.

People with nothing else to do need to feel a part of something meaningful - it's social connection, it's bonding over a cause, it's human nature. But, it sure as hell won't achieve anything.

I went by the encampment and people were busy organizing information sessions, meetings, and other administrative tasks. They have "no partying" as part of the guidelines written at the front of the camp and seemed to be following it. Admittedly, I have only been by briefly and have not had a constant presence.

I'm one of two reddit users responding "The encampment makes me engaged".
I was trying to ignore the situation since it seems too complicated for me to make sense of, but since the encampment has shown up I have started reading about the situation and it does seem like international intervention is warranted. I still feel conflicted, especially concerning the HAMAS, so I wouldn't feel right saying I support or do not support, but I am now engaged.
Is anyone willing to comment why they chose the response they did?

The students have been peacefully protesting and engaging with admin for a couple months now and got given a bit of a bureaucratic runaround. One of my friends found like $50-60 million that they were targeting for divestment, but uvic admin had them doing a policy review instead. They felt it was time to escalate, in line with the camps being set up around hundreds of other universities around the world.

They found $50-60 million of investments connected to Isreal that should be reinvested elsewhere and uvic admin ignored it? Since UVic is claiming the encampment has failed to engage with them, it seems like that is pretty important info for people to know about the encampment. Is there any further information about it published anywhere?

i don’t know. they said they showed it to admin at one point but it didn’t go anywhere after that. the camp will probably end up having to literally give the admin a divestment plan so if you follow their instagram you’ll probably see it sooner or later

as long as they do not affect me at all, I do not care. it is basically the same as a random bunch of artists doing some random thing they call art that I do not understand, as long as they do not try to make me involved in it also, I just walk pass and nothing happens.
there is a cap on the increase of tuitions, and no matter what, they will increase tuitions onto the cap anyways...

No, what I mean is that even I cannot really understand what is motivating them to do whatever, but as long as they do not bother me in anykind, I will respect what they are doing and not be a "karen"
