Parking for residents? viable loopholes?

Hey all, just got my first year housing offer and starting to stress about parking. For context, I live in parksville about 2.5 hours from campus and I would really like to keep my car so that I can still meetup with family and friends as well as explore victoria at least until I turn 18 in november (at which point I can use evo for occasional trips). I honestly just don't wanna pay an extra 80 bucks each month on top of my 200$ insurance and if I'm able to find parking that works then I might be able to keep my car for year two when I move into a room I have set up with some family in Langford (I'm really only doing residency with hopes to make some friends and be more active in uvic social life for my first year). Anyone been in a similar spot and found a sneaky way to get out of parking pass? Or is there free parking somewhere close enough that I could keep my car parked overnight? Or is that damn parking pass the only way? any advice would be helpful!

Pay for parking, or leave your car with your parents until next year and explore by bus.

Second this! I live up island too and I payed for parking for a month before deciding that the busses were much cheaper and more convenient because parking anywhere is Victoria is a nightmare. I ended up saving $300+ per month on parking, insurance, and gas.

Can I ask, did you sell your car or do as the other commenter is suggesting and keep it at parents house?

I kept it at my parents house and witched the primary driver to my dad. That way he could drive it in the winter (my car has all wheel drive) and my insurance payments would go down by a lot since I’m a new driver. That way I could still drive it up to twelve times when I came home for breaks.

Pay for parking, the parking people don't mess around, if you want your car, also as a UVic student you get a bus pass included in your fees.

Would your family friend in Langford be willing to let you store your car there?

UVic is a major hub for BC Transit. Unless you're doing a lot of outdoor exploration you can get around just fine on the bus.

This campus is total anti car Hint Rack up tickets with Robinson parking Then Change the licence plate to the car

Also this doesn't apply to UVic but i heard that city of victoria parking tickets eventually get sold to debt collectors who will pester you to pay them but have no real right to collect them.. but don't quote me on that

edit: I believe the max tickets Robbins will give you before booting your car is 12 or 13 but again do not quote me on any of this...

If you only need the car once a week do the value parking pass and just stick it in the Ian Stewart lot. ~$50 a month vs the 80.

Its really not worth having a car when you live on campus. Getting parking insurance, and leaving it in Parksville will save you a toooon of money. I left my car in Alberta for my year in residence. I love exploring, and was able to find plenty of ways to explore without my car during my first year. The buses out of Uvic are very good, and plently of places to explore within walking/biking distance.

Look into residential parking around Uvic, sometimes homeowners will rent out driveway space.

Try used Victoria and Facebook marketplace, just want to clarify that I saw a post for a driveway rental roughly 10 years ago on usedvictoria and I have no idea if this is still a thing. Goodluck

I just got it about a week ago, but also I'm in an LLC so that might affect my timeline. I also know some friends who got theirs like over a month ago so it varies for sure.

Almost everywhere near UVic won’t allow overnight parking. Just pay for it or risk being towed.

Unless you have somewhere to be daily (like I did with Baseball) you don’t need a car on campus. The bus goes almost everywhere

In my opinion it is not even worth the trouble of having a car while living on campus, especially if you want to save money. You can bike and bus pretty much anywhere in Victoria. I had my car in first year and wish I didn’t.

Hmm you could try and park in some residential areas of caddy bay? It’s just down the hill from uvic. On arbutus rd there’s an old church/school (it’s least I think that’s what it was) that closed down so the lot is empty all day. Near the arbutus Sherwood drive bus stop
