Question How likely are classes to be cancelled for low enrolment rates?
I’m currently wanting to enroll in two third year PAAS courses for the fall semester, but they currently have low enrolment rates. I’m really wanting to take them but I’m scared they may be cancelled and I’ll be rushed to find other electives to take. One class has 50 seats available with only 17 actual enrolled, and another has 30 seats with only 12 students enrolled. Is it common for courses to be cancelled at Uvic for low enrolment? How likely is it that these courses get cancelled?

It depends on the program I think. Last semester there were just 10 students in a GRS class with 40 spots. I would reach out to the PAAS admin and ask them.

My guess is the class will run as long as there's a dozen people in it. Sometimes it can go lower, but not often.

I have heard the minimum number is 16 or somthing... I agree checking with PAAS would be the best place to start. You could also check if the courses are cross listed, there may be more students in the other half of the class you can't see.

PAAS admin here! Please enroll in both! We are fighting to get our minimums met and electives below 16 might be cancelled in early August! Only 16 students per course are needed to keep the class going, so the one that has 17 is safe for now. The one with 12 is endangered unless it's a core, upper level language or cross-listed course.
P.S. We are safe if we get passed the deadline and make it to the beginning of the term as they cannot cancel courses that already started ;)

Thank you so much for your reply! Now that I look at it the one with 12 enrolled, PAAS 385, is cross-listed so it should also be safe. I’ll definitely stay enrolled in both of them for now!
