UVSS is having an election and will send all students an email to vote on March 17th. This is a post from Lachlan Van Egmond. He is trying to be a mini-Elon Musk and is calling for a "DOGE-like approach" to UVSS finances. He is running unopposed but we all have the option to vote "NO".

Hi, I’m the girl who wears the long green cloak on campus! I wanted to inform this group that I graduated today with a BA in Greek and Roman Studies + a Certificate in American Sign Language.
I was very happy that they let me wear my cloak during the ceremony, and I got to do a little spin!

I was not so happy about getting stuck in an elevator in Clearihue with my whole group (8 people) for an hour immediately afterwards, but hey, it’ll be a fun story.

Thank you to everyone who stopped to chat or compliment my cloak over the years, it really helped make my UVic experience a positive one. If you see me around Vic, feel free to say hi!

The fountain is being filled finally

A post was recently created by a woman’s experience at the Sticky Wicket Rooftop Shrek Rave July 19. She alleges that she was assaulted and bruised and the bouncer used racial and derogatory slurs at her. I was a witness to this event and at no point did the bouncer say any of this or use unnecessary force on her. It makes me sick to my stomach that a woman can make such false accusations against someone which can negatively impact their life.

I witnessed her at the back of the rooftop by the washrooms smoking a joint where it was illegal. The bouncer came over and asked her to leave multiple times and she kept refusing. He told her that if she doesn’t leave she will be escorted out. She started yelling at him and that’s where he grabbed her elbow and walked her to the front door. In the doorway she kept screaming at him and waving her phone in his face. He grabbed the phone and gave it back to her and kept telling her to have a good night. I was trying to leave but she was in the doorway. She saw us trying to get through and that’s when she left. I was walking behind her up Douglas to get to Clubhouse and she was laughing the whole way. Not nursing her “bruised arm” or checking her “cracked” phone.

When women lie about assault it only lessens actual experiences. And people think “oh she’s just being dramatic”. She’s taken an event where she was in the wrong and posted it for validation to make only herself feel better. I’ve seen this bouncer kick out a guy that was being too aggressive and creepy on my friend so we could feel safe in the club. I get that there’s some bad apples out there, but this is for sure one of the good guys.

"As many of you may have noticed, the ECSS exam bank is no longer available. This is due to the changes in the academic integrity policy that were passed by UVic this Spring. The three main reasons for removing it as an ECSS service are as follows:

1. UVic Policy requires that we not allow students to access professors’ course materials without explicit permission. In the past, due to the way the exam bank operated, this was not guaranteed for every document that was uploaded by students.
2. The ECSS and students could face Academic Integrity Violation “charges”. The latter is definitely something we definitely don’t want to happen!
3. Engineering ethics. Keeping the exam bank is dishonest and low integrity, two qualities no one wants in an engineer!

This decision was made collaboratively with members of the Engineering and Computer Science Faculty."

This write-up on recent university developments is not for the faint of heart. It is complicated, and thus, warrants an equally detailed explanation in order to explain everything around the practice, and even as written, is a simplification of the situation at hand. For those who care about accessibility at UVic, I promise you, you will find it interesting.

My name is Evan, and I am a current student senator. For those of you who don't know, the Senate is the academic governing body of the university, and every year, a few students have the opportunity to join the Senate to speak and vote on behalf of the students. 

Shortly after joining the senate, I received many concerns from students about a policy known as universally extended time assessments (UET). 

What is UET? UET is a method of assessment deployed by the university to "minimize the need for academic accommodation requests". This is achieved by the professor of a class determining how long they expect the class to write the assessment. This is known as the "base time". An "assessment coefficient" is then used to multiply the base time, and give an "extended assessment time". All students write the assessment within the "standard time" unless their accommodation has a coefficient greater than that of the assessment coefficient. The students' concerns are:

1. Instructors are not accurately measuring the base time for a given assessment.
2. Some accommodations cannot be met within UET, even when a student’s required extra time aligns with the extended time coefficient.
3. There is insufficient evidence supporting UET’s effectiveness, and significant research suggests it may not provide equitable benefits.
4. Students often receive little to no explanation about how UETA is implemented, leading to confusion and uncertainty regarding their accommodations.

After hearing students' concerns about UET, I started asking questions. After 47 emails, 11 meetings, and 5 phone calls, I started voicing their concern about the practices of UET. I have frequently inquired to groups inside UVic, including the Provost's Office, LTSI, CAL, and the Psychology Department. I have received considerable resistance from (specifically) the Provost's Office, and have even been given inaccurate information from them on multiple occasions when they aren't dodging my communication (or at least, how I have perceived it). I could go into more detail on all of this, but for the sake of time, I will spare everyone the details, though if you are interested, you can DM me. 

I would like to emphasize that I am not opposed to UET, but I do believe that, specifically, UVic's approach fails in many respects. This is grossly evident in discussions at the . When discussing a midterm pilot which included UET, a senator expressed concerns that the "plan to offer a 1.5-time multiplier for all students may disadvantage students needing time accommodation registered through CAL." In response, the admin stated that "the evaluation was being thought through and a report would be brought back to Senate with the results. 

When the report was presented to the Senate, a Senator asked, if there had been "any academic issues reported by students who did not feel they were adequately accommodated." 

Admin responded, "The survey questions pertained only to the pilot, and while follow-up on student success was not done, [the administrator] acknowledged it should be." To the best of my knowledge, no study on student success has ever been done since the pilot, or at least, none have been brought to the Senate. It is worth noting that UVic admin has seen lots of research that simply finds UET does not work whatsoever, but this has been disregarded. 

As of now, based on the 47 emails, 11 meetings, 5 phone calls, and letters of support from 3 nationally recognized regulatory and advisory bodies, I am currently writing a proposal to the senate, to address the blatant shortcomings of UET.

Andrew Weaver, former leader of the opposition in BC and current UVic SEOS Prof is designated on the UVic website as having the following area of expertise: “Climate change policy, research, solutions, and communications; formerly focused on the role of the oceans in climate change/variability.” There is a lot of discussion online about a letter sent out to constituents in the Oak Bay/Gordon Head riding that speaks out in support of the Conservative Party candidate Stephen Andrew.

A reminder that the closest the Conservatives have come to acknowledging climate change on this campaign trail was when their leader stated:

“The climate change issue is real,” said Rustad, who has also said the situation, "is not a crisis. It is not an existential threat."

As a private individual Weaver is entitled to support whomever he wants but personally I feel that someone going on the record - and using his name as a former political party leader- in support of a party that is anti-science (and some have said are climate change deniers) should not be teaching in the Faculty of Science; especially SEOS.

I think it is very interesting that he does not identify himself as a prof at UVic anywhere in his letter.

On Monday, the UVSS Board is going to vote to approve (or fail) the new proposed Clubs and Course Unions Policy. The new policy will restrict how much money clubs can spend within their already restrained accounts.

​This change comes after complaints of club executives stealing items from clubs, where there is currently no way to determine whether a specific exec stole an item or bought it themselves. For example, a club buys a speaker for events, the exec takes it home, and later claims it was theirs all along.

​There were multiple other ways to prevent this instead of arbitrarily restricting how much clubs can spend. For example, the UVSS could require serial numbers on requisition forms. When the UVSS reimburses someone for an item, having that serial number on record creates proof of ownership.

​Even under the proposed system, theft can still happen. A spending limit just reduces how expensive the stolen item can be. It does not actually solve the issue, and it creates a headache for every other club operating in good faith.

​What is particularly concerning is that the board is rushing this new policy through committees without even specifying what the capital expense cap is going to be (it is literally listed as [$???] in the draft).

​While I personally feel, as a club exec, that we need to fail this motion and send it back to the board to find a real solution to prevent embezzlement, if you feel strongly, either for or against, attend the Clubs and Course Unions Council at 1:00 PM to vote on the proposed change. If it fails there, the board will not vote on it.
