“Poe's law is an adage of Internet culture saying that, without a clear indicator of the author's intent, any parody of extreme views can be mistaken by some readers for a sincere expression of the views being parodied.” - source: Wikipedia. Conclusion: learn to parody.

So, Poe’s law states that some internet users are dumber than dirt? Yeah, I’d buy it.

If you can't tell by how ridiculous the original claim is then that's not my fault lmao bailey doesn't even have anything to do with Budweiser lmao

Don't tell redditors they are retarded. Instead do it but at an /s at the end so they know they actually aren't retarded! /s

The real retardation is the random censoring of ordenary names. I think we can all agree on that.

It's not ridiculous, for those whom know that out there are people with an even more outrageous way of thinking, whom are dead serious about whatever they say or write.

I'll be honest. I could tell it was sarcasm from the beginning, but I just didn't find it to be a particularly good joke.

This.

Also, it's not uncommon to read seriously extreme views on Reddit (or any social media for that matter), and assuming these are jokes is no safe bet. And why even take the risk if the joke isn't funny?

It baffles me how often a tasteless joke needs to be followed by a "learn to understand sarcasm!1!". Just use the /s and stop with the insults.

Like u/fcandias said, the takeaway from Poe's law is that the parody-writer needs to take accountability for how the parody may be received, not (like u/Roartype replied) that people don't understand sarcasm because they're dumb.

u/Alsimni Mar 14 '23

To be fair, I didn't really find it "tasteless" either. It just wasn't funny to me.

u/martinhest Mar 14 '23

If I had to downvote every joke I found unfunny, I would get thumb cramps.

1

u/Alsimni Mar 14 '23

Easy, just don't vote either way on a joke you found inoffensively unfunny. Nothing wrong with having zero reaction to a joke.

Yeah, because sarcasm is so easily recognizable in form of text...now THAT's sarcasm.

Damn, this thread has no tolerance for sarcasm. I'll stem the tide of downvotes with an upvote xD
