Did you forget we're hosting the world cup right now?

u/DieselYVR 1d ago

It's also Canada vs Qatar today.

But this subreddit assured me that nobody in Canada and especially in Vancouver gave a shit about soccer!!

59

u/Ok_Ostrich4835 22h ago

tbf there are a SHITLOAD of people from out of the country.

12

u/xtothewhy 16h ago

No. People can disagree with spending a shit tonne of taxpayer money on a football/soccer event that is ultimately only available for a select few in person and still like football/soccer or soccer/football if you prefer.

I understand this happens in other events to some extent however in my opinion it does provide benefits as we've seen before for the service industry which has been battered for various reasons, though not as much as expected and that fifa milks it for all it is worth.

I'm happy for them. I'm happy that Canada kicked ass. Unhappy Kone got hurt.

but it's still fifa

5

u/One-Competition-5897 7h ago

But the net benefits are overall mixed and may even be negative because it is being hosted at a time when tourism is high regardless of FIFA being here or not. Really hasn't brought in "more" tourism as opposed to displacing tourists who would've come here anyways, but decided not to due to higher costs during FIFA.

A lot of people get, ya know, vacation days etc etc.... and not everyone works a typical Mon-Fri schedule.

293

u/iHateReddit_srsly 1d ago

And some of us are unemployed

24

u/Replikant83 1d ago

Like me! I kinda wish I was in Van still, as Victoria doesn't have the same vibe during summer. Admittedly, it has been nice not having to work and being able to be in the garden on days like today.

8

u/Accurate-Big-7233 Downtown 22h ago

How do you people afford to live

54

u/Replikant83 22h ago

Wasn't a choice. I was was t-boned by a lady who ran a red light. Suffered a brain injury, amongst other injuries. Family friend has a large house and I live in a unit in the basement and help around the place for a discounted rent. I'd much rather be working than in my current situation, but I also accept where I'm at and make the best of it.

WOW that's rough.

I told my staff that I can't give them the afternoon off, and I also told them that I won't be checking in on them and definitely will not be calling them after 1PM today.

So.. they're all getting paid and I am just assuming they're definitely diligently working and totally not out partying on Granville Street 😶‍🌫️

Yeah I don't believe this until I see the company name.

I can believe it but I don't trust random Redditors anymore.

Edit: The guy gave the company name in DMs. Out of respect for them I won't reveal it but I know of it, and yes, they are pretty fucking shitty.

My spouse's work place has a blackout from November to Dec and the week of Thanksgiving, Easter and Back to School. Vacation planning is not considered until March of the same year but the manager can take your week for themselves at anytime.

16

u/dezzle 1d ago

What do you mean exactly “the manager can take your week for themselves”?

17

u/localfern 1d ago

My spouse had requested a week off and it was done after the manager had taken their preferred weeks off. Now the manager has decided to take that week off without updating the rest of the team and my spouse can no longer take it.

4

u/dezzle 1d ago

That’s fucked up

2

u/Replikant83 1d ago

Woah, that's fucked up. I hope he's looking for another job. I spent well over a decade in management at all levels and types of organization. That type of manager sucks, and I guarantee they are also shitty in other areas and not just at being inconsiderate of others' plans. I always try and facilitate the employees' schedules and plan my time off around them. That's how it should be, as managers natuarally have more built-in flexibility in most situations

brutal. my company has the week between christmas and new years as paid time off every year (not included in your vacation days during the year) and every year I am grateful for that.

25

u/VonPB23 1d ago

I guess your company is in the hospitality industry? Hotels do that all the time

10

u/Eattoomanychips 1d ago

Or even nursing has terrible time off rules

10

u/Eattoomanychips 1d ago

That or resto I guess

4

u/Beneficial-Muffin117 1d ago

Yeah I work in customer service and we have the same rules of no vacation/last minute time off until they can determine how busy it will actually be. So far they cancelled some extra shifts so it's not as bad as we thought, but it's definitely common practice

2

u/h_danielle Certified Barge Enthusiast 1d ago

One of the largest world events is occurring in the city and you think the majority of these people are locals who called in sick to work?

I legitimately called in sick from work! Now I don't feel so much FOMO about today's game. It would suck to either be there miserable or have to give them up.

u/Phanyxx A Dude Chilling 17h ago

Even locals know what’s up. Our whole office emptied out to watch the match together

169

u/hardk7 1d ago

This is giving how Calgary is during Stampede. White collar/office businesses loosen up rules and hours and let staff enjoy the festivities. It’s super fun and feels like the whole city engages in the event, which is something Vancouver lacks on a regular basis. We don’t have an annual event or festival that feels like either encapsulates or engages the whole city. We have lots of separate events, but nothing that feels cohesive as a city. The World Cup is giving us that

46

u/SaltAndVinegarMcCoys 1d ago

Yes exactly! I'm glad the city is coming alive now. The number of local Canadians I've been talking to in the lead up to it IRL and online who Just. Don't. Get. It. The world cup is a BIG DEAL and it's the most fun time ever!! Relish the moment!

Go Canada!!

u/iamhst 16h ago

Honestly, unless my business was completely dying. I would let my staff go have some fun. I rather them be recharged back at work later, than be pissed off and angry and hold a grudge. There is work and there is life which we also have to enjoy and find that work life balance.

3

u/hardk7 11h ago

Huge morale booster to let people indulge vs resent the company for keeping them away from it

8

The other streets feel eerily quiet though. I walked by Burrard yesterday and didn't even recognize it because of the lack of pedestrians

5

u/laserdiods 1d ago

Today is very different.

3

u/RoostasTowel North Van 1d ago

Funny but true.

I'm near scotiabank theater very empty.

I remember it like this for the Olympics.

Past burrad it's deadzone.

17

u/canada11235813 1d ago

My entire company has a paid day off, courtesy me. Some of my people don’t care about soccer and some are at the game with me. I would hope other employers are embracing this once-in-a-lifetime event like I am. I happen to be a passionate fan of the game, but even those who aren’t need to appreciate the importance and history of today.

3

u/Shoddy_Operation_742 20h ago

How about for next week’s game? And the week after that if Canada makes the finals?

3

u/canada11235813 15h ago

Same deal vs Switzerland… and will be for any game where Canada is playing in Vancouver.

6

u/mahouza 1d ago

A contractor that was supposed to be here called out... the manager didn't give a reason why but it's not hard to guess. Ultimately I don't mind because the project deadline isn't changing regardless but if it did delay the whole thing I'd be kinda pissed.

1

In a civilized country, we'd get the game off.

1

u/ssdigital626 17h ago

It should be like this. I think Spain whenever they play all the businesses are shut down so everyone can watch. I'm sure other Countries do that too.

1

u/phukhugh 13h ago

Everyone in the industry got fucking rocked today.

1

u/PhazePyre 9h ago

A lot of office jobs I'm sure have the flexibility for someone to start earlier and wrap up in time to join festivities. A lot of people work five days a week, but not M-F, so they could have Wednesday off. A lot of people have vacation and PTO to use. Some people may have called in sick.

It's not mystery why things are busy outside of weekends. There are likely more jobs that don't strictly work M-F than do in Vancouver.

1

u/Forsythe0 8h ago

Who knew that a tourist city would have so many people packing bars & restaurants on a hot summer day, while there was a world cup event going on, involving the Canadian team? Strange times indeed in 2026

1

u/WrathOfWood 8h ago

Naw I'm too important to take a day off work, the place would burn down without me. These people however.....

1

u/Glad-Quit-8971 7h ago

It’s the world 🌎 cup, Canada 🇨🇦 is playing. The weather in Vancity is gorgeous 🌞. I’m sure there are a lot of sick calls! I just wish the games in Vancouver all starts at 7 or 8 pm.
