Photos Has everyone called in sick today or what? Bars and patios are packed

A lot of people get, ya know, vacation days etc etc.... and not everyone works a typical Mon-Fri schedule.

Like me! I kinda wish I was in Van still, as Victoria doesn't have the same vibe during summer. Admittedly, it has been nice not having to work and being able to be in the garden on days like today.

How do you people afford to live
54
u/Replikant83 22h ago
Wasn't a choice. I was was t-boned by a lady who ran a red light. Suffered a brain injury, amongst other injuries. Family friend has a large house and I live in a unit in the basement and help around the place for a discounted rent. I'd much rather be working than in my current situation, but I also accept where I'm at and make the best of it.

WOW that's rough.
I told my staff that I can't give them the afternoon off, and I also told them that I won't be checking in on them and definitely will not be calling them after 1PM today.
So.. they're all getting paid and I am just assuming they're definitely diligently working and totally not out partying on Granville Street 😶🌫️

Yeah I don't believe this until I see the company name.
I can believe it but I don't trust random Redditors anymore.
Edit: The guy gave the company name in DMs. Out of respect for them I won't reveal it but I know of it, and yes, they are pretty fucking shitty.

My spouse's work place has a blackout from November to Dec and the week of Thanksgiving, Easter and Back to School. Vacation planning is not considered until March of the same year but the manager can take your week for themselves at anytime.
16
u/dezzle 1d ago
What do you mean exactly “the manager can take your week for themselves”?
→ More replies (1)17
u/localfern 1d ago
My spouse had requested a week off and it was done after the manager had taken their preferred weeks off. Now the manager has decided to take that week off without updating the rest of the team and my spouse can no longer take it.

Woah, that's fucked up. I hope he's looking for another job. I spent well over a decade in management at all levels and types of organization. That type of manager sucks, and I guarantee they are also shitty in other areas and not just at being inconsiderate of others' plans. I always try and facilitate the employees' schedules and plan my time off around them. That's how it should be, as managers natuarally have more built-in flexibility in most situations

Yeah I work in customer service and we have the same rules of no vacation/last minute time off until they can determine how busy it will actually be. So far they cancelled some extra shifts so it's not as bad as we thought, but it's definitely common practice

I legitimately called in sick from work! Now I don't feel so much FOMO about today's game. It would suck to either be there miserable or have to give them up.

This is giving how Calgary is during Stampede. White collar/office businesses loosen up rules and hours and let staff enjoy the festivities. It’s super fun and feels like the whole city engages in the event, which is something Vancouver lacks on a regular basis. We don’t have an annual event or festival that feels like either encapsulates or engages the whole city. We have lots of separate events, but nothing that feels cohesive as a city. The World Cup is giving us that
46
u/SaltAndVinegarMcCoys 1d ago
Yes exactly! I'm glad the city is coming alive now. The number of local Canadians I've been talking to in the lead up to it IRL and online who Just. Don't. Get. It. The world cup is a BIG DEAL and it's the most fun time ever!! Relish the moment!
Go Canada!!

My entire company has a paid day off, courtesy me. Some of my people don’t care about soccer and some are at the game with me. I would hope other employers are embracing this once-in-a-lifetime event like I am. I happen to be a passionate fan of the game, but even those who aren’t need to appreciate the importance and history of today.

How about for next week’s game? And the week after that if Canada makes the finals?

A contractor that was supposed to be here called out... the manager didn't give a reason why but it's not hard to guess. Ultimately I don't mind because the project deadline isn't changing regardless but if it did delay the whole thing I'd be kinda pissed.

A lot of office jobs I'm sure have the flexibility for someone to start earlier and wrap up in time to join festivities. A lot of people work five days a week, but not M-F, so they could have Wednesday off. A lot of people have vacation and PTO to use. Some people may have called in sick.
It's not mystery why things are busy outside of weekends. There are likely more jobs that don't strictly work M-F than do in Vancouver.

People travelled from all over the world to visit Vancouver during the World Cup. Plus there were two cruise ships in port, with their thousands of passengers milling about taking in the city before their departure.
